??? The whole quote is derived from Fear and Loathing. Wheres "Baker"? Like Bakersfield? I'm confused. "We were on the edge of the desert, near Barstow, when the drugs began to take hold..."

Well, it IS the capital of Michigan, isn't it?

I have friends in Connecticut too, although that's nowhere near!!

I also would like to go to Japan but I don't have enough money. But it is definitely a personal plan for the future. Actually, there are many places in the world I'd like to visit.

Hmmm...Very interesting. Anyways, a trip to Japan would be quite expensive, although people can get good deals depending on where they live and how far in advance they make reservations. Personally, the only way I would go to Japan is if I knew someone there and they were fluent in both Japanese and English. If there is any hopes to go, I personally recomend a group. Anyways, if there is any plan on going, I may concider it (Always wanted to go to Japan at least once in my life)

Now, in terms of a few places in the US that would be good to go to if you want to see the pure beauty of it, I recommend either Tennessee or the smaller places in Florida. Tennessee has little to do, but has a natural feel that gives it atmosphere, while Florida is one of the more relaxing places to visit, whether it is near a beach or not.

Im planning on going to Japan this next Summer and amongst others I have Yakumo to blame! :-D
His akihabara videos were a great inspiration! :prayer: :smt023

I wanted to go there this past summer but I had no one to come with me, I dont really want to go alone...
I already speak Portuguese, English, Spanish and understand fairly well French and Italian but all these are useless in Japan!!

So meanwhile I've started studying some japanese, it isnt much... but the ability to read and understand the basics makes me feel more confident and I doesnt seem so scary now (In case I do end up going alone).

Looking back I think it wasnt a bad decision to delay the trip for a year, so when Summer 2005 comes I will have learned more japanese, I will have more money to spend and alone or not, IM GOING TO JAPAN! :-D (and I would love to meet you guys there) :drinkers:

Wish I could go again. Twice within a year is a little too much for a jobless bum my age.

If you can't get by in Japanese, don't feel shame in breaking down and speaking Engrish.

Indeed, and it can lead to funny situations - as in random people on the shinkansen starting to converse with you to practice their english :-D

Oh and I advise anyone to learn katakana, it came in more handy than I thought and it is actually pretty easy to memorize.

    Katakana is indeed your friend.

I'd say stay in Kansai. I like Kobe, lots of game stores. I found good game bargains in Himeji too. I'd definitely advise the JR pass, take the shinkansen to Tokyo, stay overnight one night, then go back to Kobe. Tokyo is worth seeing, but there's no reason to limit all your game shopping to Akihabara.

Japan really isn't a terribly expensive place, so long as you're not in Tokyo all the time.

How much is one of those JR passes? Can those be used in the subway too?

And for those who have been in Japan before or who live there, how easy is it for someone with little to no japanese knowledge to get around? (buying train/subway tickets, getting a room, etc)

A friend of mine who went to Japan sometime ago used to tease me about how if I ever went to Japan I wouldnt even be able to get out of the airport! (I only started to learn japanese last year)

You'll find that most bigger train stations (bar Shibuya for some oddreason) and airports all have English signs. Getting from Narita to the main city is quite easy so you'll have no problems there. The first time I went to Tokyo I had almost no problems at all and I didn't know Japanese.

A JR pass is $250-$400 and must be bought from outside japan.
