You mentioned that the PC engine had the characters changed. The same thing happened in Brazil. Wonder Boy in Monster Land was released for the Master System as "Monica no Castelo do Dragão". If i'm not mistaken it was the first Tectoy translation / hacking job, so there were still some english language stuff left in the game. Anyway, the same happened with Wonder Boy III (Master System), released here as "Turma da Mônica em o Resgate" and Wonder Boy in Monster World (Mega Drive), released as "Turma da Mônica na Terra dos Monstros". Info on Monica, for those of you curious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica's_Gang
It's not too expensive here but I don't want to buy it becaus I'll never play it. If someone could video the PS2 version for me then I'd do it. The video would have to be 720p and if possible at 60fps. That's right. I know all about the Monica hacks. They look really cheap too I though about adding the Brazilian game but decided against it since its basically a sprite hack.
They look cheap because that's how they were made. Remember this was the early 90's, Brazilian economy was just opening itself again to free trade. Computers weren't exactly cheap and gaming development skills were probably nonexistent. Kudos to Sega and other devs for allowing Tectoy to make localizations. I honestly doubt Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Wonder Boy III would have sold the ammout of copies the hacked Monica versions were. Here's some scans of an article from VideoGame magazine, talking about the work to modify the games. Here's a translated article from Exame magazine, from 1992, talking about how Tectoy became such a succesful company in just 5 years: http://en-sretroshock.blogspot.com.br/2015/02/tec-toy-star-that-rises.html
I could do that. I don't have a capture card, but I could record it with a camera in 1080p at 60fps. It won't look as good as a direct capture, but it should still look pretty good. I'm using RGB for my PS2.
Nice, thanks for that. I'll have a look over them later on. Hmm, ok, that might work. Is it possible for you to do a direct audio capture too since video camera mics aren't that good. I can match the audio capture with the video myself so you wouldn't need to worry about matching them up. It's very kind of you to offer assistance for the show. I'll be sure to give credit. OK, I think I'll do DOA 1 first then follow up with DOA2.
Yeah, I can record the audio directly, just not the video. I can also crop the video so you don't see the edges of the monitor. By the way, it's been a while since I've played that version, but I remember thinking (the last time I played it) that it was pretty shit compared to the DC version. Still, you'll want to include it if you're doing a show about DOA2.
Yep, the PS2 version is shit compared to the DC release. That's great you can directly capture the audio. That will make a big diffrence. I won't be doing DOA2 for about 4 weeks so there's plenty of time to capture the footage. Thanks for offering to do this.
Boob physics The Saturn port is really an amazing piece of work. A must have game for the system and it's actually ridiculous this wasn't released in the west. I really think the PS1 version (can't really call it a port) should have been called Dead or Alive ++, since it's actually very different and released an year later, right in the middle of Dead or Alive 2 development.
Since DOA2 is coming up I nabbed Hardcore on PSN. The PS3 Emulates it warts and all and GOOD GOD THE SLOWDOWN. THE SLOWDOWN. Plus somebody cranked the contrast way WAY up. Otherwise it's pretty much DOA2 Ultimate on XBOX with worse graphics. On a side note, I'm sick in bed today. SO what am I watching? Something on Netflix? Rasslin? NOPE Good ole Retrocore 1. I have driven myself to madness trying to find that Ikaruga remix. Also the intro is as true now as it was then. Electronica Ainus indeed.
Runs pretty accurately on PS3. Not sure how it runs on an actual PS3 with BC but the download version is 1 to 1.
Finally had the opportunity to watch the DOA BOTP, my god it was bouncy! The physics are very strange on the PS1 version, what the hell happened there!?!?? The Saturn version is a work of art, quailty gameplay and great resolution. I didn't realise just how different the PS1 version was or how much later it was released. Still the best version and a game I must pick up asap in the meantime I will fill my boots with the DC version of DOA2.
