Love the channel! Don't forget to get a custom channel name either, if you haven't already! Those ugly long channel names drive me bananas!
My man! Right here Edit: Just be careful to get the name you want since you can't change it I ended up with something rubbish (RetroJunkie2020 as my username) but then was able to get ShaneMcRetro as the YouTube channel name! Double edit: So either youtube.com/retrojunkie2020 or youtube.com/shanemcretro both redirect to the user RetroJunkie2020. Then you've also got youtube.com/c/ShaneMcRetro - it's quite a mess really...
I've spent more time with Slap Fight than any other shooter by a long distance, the first version I played being the CPC 464 port (which came on a compilation tape along with Elevator Action, I seem to recall). Then, when I got into importing for the Mega Drive, I ended up getting that edition - Yuzo Koshiro's new compositions are just fantastic, and to this day I still prefer this version over the arcade original. I'll probably never forget the enemy attack patterns, while my favoured method is to combine the homing missiles, side shot and shield, refreshing these whenever needed. However, by doing that you miss being able to hit several items hidden throughout the game that require use of the bomb weapon, plus there's a similar extra that demands you switch to the standard shot. Also, I'll always remember the odd glitch with the CPC port... Instead of the map looping back to the start whenever you defeat the final boss, the whole machine simply crashes. I knew someone at a local CPC developer (Alternative Software) who reverse engineered the code for me, and he claimed this problem was caused by the compilers leaving out a string requesting the tape be rewound so the game could be reloaded! I never could find a standalone copy, though I've managed to get both the arcade and MD versions to loop about twenty times before I get bored. One day, I might just try finding out what the limit is... I'm guessing it's probably 99 and doesn't give you anything for this. Anyway, thanks for some great memories. If only there was a massively upgraded and expanded Saturn version. P.S. Doesn't anyone else find it odd that none of Nintendo's systems ever received this game? Finally, I'm sure it was included on some obscure PS2 retro collection as well. If so, this was probably just the arcade ROM being emulated. I'd love to see if I didn't just imagine such a version existing.
Gonna watch this one later tonight. My only memories from Big Run are from a Super Famicom magazine preview back in the day, showing the newly released system and some games. Have to say it looks better in the pictures than in motion.
Oh yes. Big Run did look cool in the magazine previews. Such a disappointment when it was actually released.
After being asked many times on my Super Street Fighter 2 video, where is the 3DO version I finally gave up and made Battle of the Ports - Super Street Fighter II X / Turbo.
Great episode Yakumo! I never knew the Amiga CD32 had a port of SSFIIX. But i do remember playing the 3DO port at some game stores. Still holds up pretty well. I'm also quite surprised with the PS1 port, but yes Saturn and Dreamcast are the best.
I was also quite surprised to know the CD32 got a port. I only found out a few weeks back. You are right about the 3DO port. It was really good for the time but these days you need to play either the arcade or the Dreamcast port followed closely by the Saturn.
Two great episodes back to back and two of my fav games back in the day! I played COTA to death even had all versions for the Saturn i.e. Jap, US and PAL no idea why?????? Remember rubbing my PS1 owning mated nose it for years, ha.
I really enjoyed this episode, I remember only owning the Playstation version back in the day and was so glad when I finally managed to upgrade to the Saturn version. And on a more general note I've really been enjoying your Capcom "Battle of the Port" episodes. I've been doing a playthrough of all Capcom arcade games (and console ports) and its been great watching your vids to see how the computer ports stacked up in comparison.
I'm glad you are enjoying the shows. The next show will not be Capcom based though I'm afraid but still a very big name in gaming. Hope you like it.
