I've been thinking about this for the longest time. Why are chinese people such dicks, specially older ones? They have no manners and are very rude, I work in the hospitality industry... so i deal with all sorts of people, but chinese.... god damn.

Hmm, dodgy topic but you do have a point in a way. It all boils down to culture. Chinese and Koreans are generally aggressive as in want it now, will not wait. I'm not saying all are like this but as a general stereo type (From a Japanese prospective) that's what we are told.

In liverpool I used to have a mid-aged chinese couple down the hall. They were awesome folks actually, very kind and they even cooked for me sometimes. I don't understand your gripe really, all nations have people who are dicks.

I think the reason for the above quoted behavior is that there are so many of them, that they are constantly in fear of running out of food

That's completely contrary to my experience of Chinese people. I lived in blocks that would usually have a large group of Chinese nationals for years at uni and they were absolutely model housemates in almost every respect. Always courteous to a fault, never came back from the pub vomiting everywhere, never played their music at deafening volume at 3AM. The one complaint was that they'd always dominate the fridge space, to the point where the fridges would be so full they wouldn't stay cold. That drove me nuts.

Anyway, I guess this just highlights different cultural attitudes towards menial staff (assuming that's what your job is).

EDIT: I remember an example where I wished that the Chinese would be a bit less passive - I was cooking something on the hob in the kitchen and forgot about it, came back too late and found it boiling over and spitting bits all over the kitchen, with a group of Chinese girls all just gawping at it. Use some common sense and move it, for fuck's sake!

There are multiple people who fall under the Chinese banner and they're not all the same
    There are mainlanders
    There are HK
    There are Taiwanese
    There are Tibetens
    There are mongolians
    [...]

To get this out front, I'm far from being an expert or really having any clue what I'm talking about but based on what I've seen from my 1 month in china and spending all the years with my wife (who is from the north east of china)...

Focusing on Mainlanders (which is the group your referring to). I think a lot of it is a product of how things are in china. China has a huge population and every day you have to be aggressive to get what you want or to get things done. If you aren't then you will be ignored or passed over. Hell it's like this in restaurants. Even if you've been there longer, the servers will take care of the more aggressive people first then others.

Even so, it does not mean they are mean or self centered people. They are still very nice/generous when dealt with on a personal level.

As for the food bit, HAHAHAHAHA it's worse then you think. I'm a pretty sizable guy (i'm 6ft) and my wife still finds it odd that I barely eat all that much in comparison to her Chinese friends who tend to eat 3-4x more then me. Hell my wife is constantly snacking through out the night where I just have dinner and that's it (with small exception of maybe having a piece of fruit once in a while at night).

I'm sure 99% of it has to do purely with culture. From what I've read and been told the Chinese are very ancestry oriented where the kids give respect to their elders no matter what. Period. End of story. Younger Chinese I cannot speak for in this regard.

Knew a guy who used to fix video game consoles and worked on this Chinese kid's 360. He was born in the US but his mother might not have been, who knows. The 360 had been tampered with ahead of time which was contrary to what he had been told and couldn't fix it due to the tampering. The Chinese mother got royally pissed and was (presumably) swearing at him in Chinese despite him being well over 6 feet tall and she being around 5"3' or so. She expected and then demanded he do what she "asked" of him and when it didn't happen she interpreted it as being a disrespectful punk kid. At least thats what we took from the situation. The neighbors in the apartment complex around her place came out to see wtf was going on but didn't seem to be surprised about any of it.

As for the younger generation of Chinese born? I think I can postulate a hypothesis. I was listening to NPR or something of the sort and they were talking about how China essentially manufactures everything for the US and then bootlegs it in some cheap knock off form never making a superior knock off. Apparently the Chinese somehow have gotten it into their head that since they make all this cool stuff that they are the cool ones. On top of that a lot of them seem to believe that they are the best and can never fail at anything without being able to frame the thought into context as to what and how they're the best. I've also seen personally some Chinese try to claim that China created Mickey Mouse and other popular, well known world-wide characters.

This might shed some light on the topic:
    http://middlekingdomlife.com/blog/personal-stories/my-narcissistic-chinese-girlfriend/

Haven't read it yet but am about to out of curiosity. Seems China as a whole has become incredibly narcissistic despite human rights violations, censorship of almost everything, incredible amounts of pollution and overcrowding, etc. I know some North Koreans genuinely believe the rest of the world is absolutely horrific and they live a wonderful life in their gulag due to being brainwashed but unlike North Korea the regular people have internet access, have cell phones, have cars, have almost everything they desire and then some.

I can't wait for the rest of the world to realize that having China manufacture everything will eventually get more expensive than it would cost to do it elsewhere and China collapses because no one wants to buy a knock off of a knock off of a knock off of Gucci made from faux faux leather that falls apart the first time it gets water on it.

    EDIT:
    http://middlekingdomlife.com/guide/narcissistic-types-chinese-women.htm

This too. The one child policy of China was a factor I didn't consider but this article takes into account. An interesting hypothesis, wonder if there are any scientific studies out there on the topic.

And I have been called a racist, by the original poster himself... hmmm double standards any one ? But the reason why I wrote so long ago to him on msn "At least I am white ! ! !" was because he had been riling me up and pissing me off, so I am not the one who is really a racist here.

You're white, you can't say anything, I'm a minority so I'm allowed to say what ever i want.

    /sarcasm.

In other words, nothing of what i said is racist, i just made a simple observation as to how chinese generally eat alot , dont drink that much liquids with their food and are generally not very nice to people that "work for them".

Being Canadian Chinese with a significant other of mainland Chinese decent I could probably fill in the gaps. As some members have pointed out, resources are finite and China is huge. I mean both in size, administrative regions, and people. If you just sit around and expect things to happen for you, you'll be waiting a long time because no matter how “needy” you look, there will always be loads and loads of people more “needy” than you. This goes for anything. Getting into school, food, jobs, service... Anything. So if your not aggressive, you'll be easily left behind in someone else's dust.

Unfortunately for the elderly people, this kind of mentality has been ingrained into their heads. When they leave for another country, like Canada, USA, etc, they take all of those habits which were necessities at the time, into a situation which doesn't require it. Net result? You look pushy, rude, and unfriendly. It's started to become better with the younger crowd since generally they are more understanding and willing to change, but it's still an uphill battle since the bottom line is basically: Limited resources trying to satisfy a virtually unlimited demand.

As for the comment about skinny Chinese people eating loads of food, I can understand it. My cousins are super skinny and they can eat mounds of food. Ice cream, cheese cake, spaghetti, you name it, and still not gain any weight. Maybe Chinese people have better metabolism or something, but we just seem to burn it off faster than others. Though there are fat Chinese people to be sure. But then again, most of the Chinese diet is stir-fry vegetables with lean meat so it's a lot different than the north American diet.

That's why they are afraid to run out of food...

Multiply what your wife and their friends can eat times thousands and millions and you get what chinese people eat as a whole...

    It scares me too
