Just stay home or go to a fast food joint when you go out to eat in America guys, much appreciate it.
Maybe I didn't emphasize it enough earlier. The problem with tipping in the US is that it has become the norm. Employers who get to pay their people that $2/hr rate are basically doing so because it means they get to make more money. Bartenders' job is to keep people buying drinks. And think about how much money is made on any given drink... even cheap-ass beer is at least $2 a can. That's some crazy markup. Basically the customer is directly paying the employee because the employer doesn't have to. Tipping should be for great service. Like, "That guy has done a fine job." Not just because nothing horrible went wrong. I also think it's funny that bartenders get muuuch higher tips (a dollar+ a drink, more like 25-50%) in comparison to waiters and waitresses, who get the generic 10-20% for doing what I consider more work. But in a society where tipping is the norm, (IE going to any restaurant or bar in this country), you better fucking tip. It may be bullshit to some, but that's just how it is. If you can't afford your meal/drink AND a tip, then don't go out. It's part of the cost.
Then you get to wait forever. For those of you that aren't from the states and haven't been there, the tip is customary for restaurants and a few other jobs. Not tipping at a restaurant will surely cause a confrontation, mainly asking why you're such a cheap fuck. It is what it is, and it's not going away. It also works the other way. Many students put themselves through college on tipping jobs. I had a few over the years, and they're a way to teach young people the value of service & cash.
Sounds like it's easier just to avoid USA, where you take tipping to the extreme. Everybody can say what they want, like it's part of the cost, but as long as they don't include service on the total price/receipt then it's not. I basically don't care about managers not/or very low paying their staff, if people would stop tipping then the manager better come bring those drink him fucking sell for all I care. But whatever, this is probably the point where the "Chinese" probably talk shit about US instead of the other way around like this topic started.
When in America, tip as Americans do. You at least have to appease our fat asses. Otherwise you'd end up "That douchebag from Amsterdam who didn't tip". Which leads to "Foreigners are rude" conversations by ignorant young adults. The inane bigotry of this nation continues. People start threads about why Chinese people have a culture that doesn't agree with theirs.
Oh man, I won't be able to sleep for al least a week  And that foreigners are rude mentality is already rooted in your culture anyway
When I was in China, one time I tried to clean up after myself in a fast food Restaurant. You know, like throw your trash out, return your tray (I guess the “keep your city beautiful” thing most Canadians do). Low and behold, no sooner did I start cleaning stuff up people started staring at me. Why? 1. People consider eating out somewhat expensive especially if you go to foreign fast food. So for the money you pay, they expect a high level of service and quality. I mean, they had people constantly cleaning the washrooms and opening the door for people. They also had free umbrellas for customers to borrow in case it rained which you could simply return at your next visit. And the kicker? I went to a McDonalds. A regular joe-nobody McDonalds. 2. When you clean up after yourself, your taking a job away from someone else. If you were competing with a billion other people for whatever jobs are available, would you like it if you were made “obsolete” just because others were cleaning your trash for you? Well, at the very least your manager would chew you out for letting a “Customer” do your job. Anyway, thats service and competition for you. When everyone beside you is trying to give out 110% just to keep their job, people sure start to haul ass and go the extra mile for quality. And this is just considered "doing your job" so no tip for you!
Yes, and there's no need to add fuel to that fire. Also, I wouldn't consider it "my" culture.:thumbsup: I can't wait to be not-here.
I used to work at a Chinese restaurant. It was owned by a family that came from mainland China to New York's China Town to my hometown in Pennsylvania. They were very minimalist. Their living room was almost completely empty and their kids only owned what they needed. They seemed to be happy, but they also used to fight quite a lot (and loudly, too). It was hard to figure them out. Sometimes they'd be very generous and give me extra money and free food, but then they'd flip the switch and become very stingy (and dare I say, Chinese?). The nicest people in the family were the parents and their son (who speak little to no English). Their daughter is the most Americanized of all of them (being the youngest) and she has a horrible attitude.
hmmm I think some of you are extremely stereotyping and generalising about the Chinese people. Cause I frequent a Chinese quite regularly , alphagamer had the opportunity to dine there, and my friend, alphagamer and I had a blast there. And alphagamer asked me, if we weren't too loud. But we just had a good time . Anyway I ate there, and the owner of the restaurant is an old Chinese man (76 years old) and if he had that attitude some of you guys are mentioning the "Chinese" have, then I would NEVER frequent that restaurant, so I must say again. You are extremely generalising and stereotyping people. Cause I have ALWAYS experienced the Chinese people in Denmark being those who would assimilate the fastest of all "foreigners". The only bad thing I can say about Chinese people is the Chinese government: Not the people ! The first descendants of Danish and Chinese people became "stateless" , at the time of THAT Danish government, back in the early 1900´s; so talking shit about the Chinese to me, is such not something I like.
Alchy: if you ever got to Copenhagen Denmark, then there is a street right next to Copenhagen Central station, named Istedgade, and there you go into one of their shops and buy yourself a big dildo. And then I will give you a pair of slippers, and if you do not like the slippers. Then you can go fuck your self ! ! ! since to me you are such an idiot, but then again it takes one to know one. But alas Alchy, just go fuck yourself, and put me on ignore. Cause you are really not worth the trouble I am having with you. Cause what fucking country should I then talk about ? If not my own , that I love, and I call it a fucked up country. With love in my voice. Cause it is "my" country and certainly not yours. So spare me your shit, and put me on ignore.
I have a lot of Asian friends one of them from Shinjin China, I was his first real friend in America and helped him with his English he now speaks it perfectly, he comes from a rich background but in no way is he stuck up or a dick, as a matter of fact he is one of my better kinder friends despite your claims of nationality and the publics view on the stereotypical rich kid attitude. The guy would give his shirt off his back, I don't understand what part / group of Chinese your dealing with but I don't get that vibe around him or his family.
