 Well i have had a look at this today, and a bit of a blast, and am not sure it was worth a 12 year wait, it could just be me been fussy, but i did love the originals, i just expected more from this, but am not sure what it is i was expecting! Maybe its just me, has anybody else looked at it yet?
Mine should be arriving in the mail in a few days. I don't think any game is worth waiting 12 years, no matter what it is. If it's fun and makes me laugh a few times, I'll be happy. I don't have high expectations. I'm buying it simply because it's Duke Nukem Forever.
It hasn't. It comes out on the 14. I think he meant he got one-day shipping or something so he'll get it on or around the day it comes out. Or something.
jammanutz is probably from Europe, it released on the 9th over here (and maybe other places like Australia? I don't know). I can't really comment because I haven't played it. Still I think a lot of my friends have unrealistically high expectations, it wasn't in development for 12 years because everything went to plan. I think i'll be happy as long as it's a fun game that stays true to the Duke.
It's like an ordinary competent shooter with no real hook beyond the typical stuff, gameplay-wise. The two-weapons at a time thing and a few other design choices make this Duke experience feel forcibly modernized, although there are fun things to distract you and the humour is certainly retained. Technically the game is cool at points but looks dated and runs heavy.
Looks like it's released in Asia too since Amazon Japan are selling the Asian version right now for only 4500 yen. It should be 7800 yen when it gets a Japanese release. Yakumo
It actually reminds me a lot of Serious Sam, but it's a long time since I've played it. I have had a go on the PC version, both through the demo and the first 1 or 2 hours of the retail version. My main gripes are as follows: a) the field of view seems to be locked to a stupidly low value, making it feel zoomed in and inducing motion sickness [I've never felt sick playing a video game before this]. b) the graphics are ordinary, lots of bump mapping but not a lot else. c) the mouse seems... sluggish. I've played with the sensitivity and smoothing and can't seem to get it right, I've heard other people complainging about this with the demo. d) the voice acting is completely unconvincing and, sadly, not in a comical way. It just seems woefully sub-standard. e) the progression seems like the too often recycled "run along for a bit, get trapped in room, kill 20 monsters, door opens" type of bullshit that everyone's grown to hate. f) the humour seems forced and cheap. I know this is a Duke Nukem game, but it's as if the jokes (understandably) after 10 years were starting to sound a bit tired so they spent 15 minutes writing new ones. g) it seems unpolished. I understand Gearbox only had the license for 12 or 18 months or so, but things like items not reflecting in mirrors, characters looking and speaking in the direction that the scripting tells them, not actually AT you, the player. It breaks the immersion. Obviously, I'm not too happy with it. Who knows, I might have a great time finishing it off but I thought I'd leave my initial impressions anyway.
If history has taught us anything in video games it's that something you've been waiting years for will inevitably be a heap of shit. saying that,. I'd still like to play the game. Yakumo
I tried the demo, it isn't a bad videogame, but it wasn't worth the wait. It's a decent shooter, but nothing out of the extraordinary. At first, I tought that the nostalgia, the humor and Duke himself would be enough to make it worth the wait, but it wasn't, and just like Yakumo said, after waiting for so long, it's impossible to live up to the expectations. I feel that the game should have been released in 2001, that demo looked great and had really great stuff.
Picked up the ps3 version today (im in europe) Graphics are average and the voice acting isnt the greatest, you can tell its been in production for a long time but the game doesent seem to flow well. At times there can be something that youve missed and can be wandering around trying to find a door/hatch/element to trigger for 10 minutes. Load times are a pain aswel. It is still fun tho and Ive just been shrunk and am driving a r/c car at the minute lol
According to Joystiq, it's shit: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/
Been playing it also. The graphics are substandard for this gen, the gameplay is very outdated. It really plays like a 1990s fps. Duke's lines, however, are very funny. The levels also are very disjointed and don't flow well. I think its nice that it finally came out but for $59.99 US its ridiculous. This should have been on the psn store for 10 bucks.
Honestly? First, it's been FOURTEEN YEARS. 1997-2011 Secondly I saw the 2 minute gameplay on southpark the other night and I guess that I outgrew the concept. Girls making out and bathroom humor just don't excite me like when I was fifteen years old. The graphics look shiny though. That seems to be it. A nice looking game, but cheap and tacky.
On a related note, how much money went into development? As a whole, can this title ever make this costs back and be considered profitable? Just think of what they spent on game engine licenses!
I concur 100%. Duke Nukem 3D wasn't even that huge of a deal in terms of being genre changing, DOOM had already done that. What it gave us was a Duke storyline with pretty cool weapons, pretty good mod capabilities and ultimately more Duke. Anyone expecting this game to be the best thing since Half-Life is nuts.
