I've seen the "Duke fan" excuse on the Internet soooo many times in the past few days, I guess "Duke fans" enjoy playing a crappy budget-grade shooter if it has Duke in it. That kinda makes sense, since this would've never been released at full price if it wasn't called "Duke Nukem Forever". I don't like new FPSs (or FPSs in general) either, but at least they have some production values behind them, and they're still better than this garbage. I wish this game had never been released, then it could've remained as an interesting legend in gaming history. Now it just has an anticlimactic ending.
I finished the game and I actually enjoyed every bit of it. Perfect?no, not at all. Fun? Yes, in a 90's sort of way. You probably have to be old enough to enjoy the punishment I guess.. I also liked Bulletstorm but DNF has a special place now in my heart - I actually enjoyed every moment I played it, waiting to load aside.
I've probably said it a billion times already However, I've still enjoyed FPS games like Half-Life 1&2 and yes, Duke 3D, but this game is just generally bad.
The guys at gearbox just mentioned something that explains the constant production delays at 3Drealms. So some dude at the studio says "we didn't add anything, just took what 3d realms did, put it together and polish it a little" Is obvious now that the reason why 3drealms kept remaking the game wasnt just because new engines came up, but because they sucked at storytelling and level design so the game sucked too. It all boils down to this: Even a remake of the original DN3D running on UE3 or some other awesome engine would be better than this game.
nice way to give wrong information in a funny manner... the constant addition of new gameplay elements and a general lack of focus on basic gameplay concepts is what kept the game back. The side-games are curious and entertaining and apparently the folks in 3D realms wanted to make it a very engaging and detailed experience - judging from the grand features suggested in those barren early days. They eventually ran out of steam and that shows, but the game has mojo. The kind of mojo that few games usually have, let alone modern games - something that made me start it over after I was done, something I rarely ever do. You might not like it for various reasons but I'm sure that if you're honest with yourself and admit the game's flaws as part of the ride, you'll have a good 90's style time. It's a bit punishing but the fact that you're left alone to discover most things and suddenly get into a fight is the type of gameplay old PC gamers thrived on. It's oldschool in many ways but it's worth a shot if you were half-good at those games like Blood, Heretic, Hexen, Quake, Doom, Rise of the Triad etc.
Those games had way better level design though...although I always thought Blood and every other Build engine game except Duke 3D was derivative 90s FPS crap.
There's a load of games that use the Build engine that nobody's heard of. Some NAM game, a hunting game, bunch of others. Only Blood and Shadow Warrior are notable IMO.
I've put a couple hours into the game and so far I'm lovin' it. I find the enemy spawning "gimmick" pretty enjoyable actually. It got pretty intense while protecting my babes. I'll do anything for my babes.
Also just finished the singleplayer mode of DNF, and also liked every bit of it! Had loads of fun while playing it, better then most games I have played in the last couple of years. Fun is most important when playing a game, and DNF got you covered! And c'mon how many games you know have a glory hole in it... Hahaha
i completed it last week.. it wasn't great, but it wasn't horrible.. it was mediocre but i played it through because i love Duke Wouldn't go for a 2nd play through tho
finished it a few hours ago. Not even a Duke fanboy, so that's not why I liked it. But I did like it. A lot. Usually if I get bored with a game, or frustrated - I say screw it, turn it off, and put one I enjoy in. And something about this game clicked, made me have fun enough to excuse the stupid long load times and finish it. touche 3D Realms, you did something for me Bungie has yet to do.
I tried a demo of DNF on my PC, and I was not impressed at all. It seems exactly like every other crappy, generic shooter out right now. I like a good FPS as much as the next guy, but this is not a good FPS. At least, that's the impression I got from the 5 minutes of so of playing it. I didn't even finish the demo - and that in itself says something.
