Not true. Dn3d was the first true 3d game. Cant look at your feet in doom. Actuly duke also used voice samples and scripted elements pretty well.
okay, then educate. don't just shut down. I mean, there were other games that were more 3d. Descent was a neat tech demo for me, but never really did much. There were some other games for say, the 32x however I would say that for the most part duke 3d was the first fully 3d game that really mattered. I am defining that as a game where you can look up down, left right. Wolfenstien was only one axis.
Duke 3D didn't allow proper 3D. You can't have a bridge in that game that you can walk over and under. There were many, many games that pre-date it for proper polygonal 3D. Honest.
But that isn't how the rest of the world defines "3D". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Build_engine Quite clearly not "real" 3D.
Okay then I suppose that I am wrong. Would a better statement be: First game to give two axis sense of 3d? Either way it sticks out on a level to me as more significant than doom for graphics. Doom was important for many other reasons but duke seemed to bring to the table a lot of new (or maybe not new but done well) concepts. Interactive pool table? Those scripted events? I mean, the first ten seconds with that spacecraft crashing over you. They were for me, pretty cool concepts
What made Duke 3D so memorable for me at least was that it was the first FPS I can remember that tried to make the levels seem like real places. FPSs before that were basically a bunch of corridors stuck together. And about DNF, there's no way it could've lived up to the 14 year wait. No way any game could. I still wanna play it just because it's Duke Nukem Forever!
So far, reviews are trashing the game. The main complaints are the loading screens between every death and the non-linearity. And no one thinks that the game is funny, yet they all claim to have loved DN3D. I mostly like to let people have their own opinions without being a jerk, but I have to break that rule now. The reviews are wrong. If you like Duke Nukem, then you're going to like this game. I couldn't put it down.
I played it almost all the way through, while some things were fun I found it to be a bit tedious if im honest. It was mostly enter a room, kill all the bad guys then the game lets you pass. The game doesent flow well, and as you said Alec when you die the entire level loads again. Also the difficulty level is quite odd, most of the time its quite easy but at certain points with boss type's or areas with lots of enemies the difficulty level seems to switch into overdrive. When it takes an age for the game to load when you die, hitting one of the harder parts, the game becomes a bit of a pain. I got bored of playing it after a few hours and turned it off, but I will go back and finish it at some stage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-person_shooter#Early_first-person_shooters:_1970s_to_early_1990s There's loads, basically.
Just for shits and giggles I checked the games review on IGN. 6.3, Clearly the publisher/developer hasn't bribed them. I think if you have to check a review before you buy a game. Go to an individual. Somebody reviewing on youtube (not a partner) or even places like this were nostalgia isn't going to either A. Give it a good review or B. The reviewer be bribed
Duke Nukem 3D was the first game to...erm. Hrm. Have strippers appear in a game using the BUILD engine. There we go.
This game is very fun. However, I am afraid that it is becoming cool and trendy to hate this game. Don't by into the biased reviews and judge for yourself.
Just watched a few gameplay vids and so I've decided to buy it. Will give it a spin tonight when I get in from work. It looks refreshingly basic and straight forward lol which will make a change from the gritty real world shit that COD keeps ramming down my throat. Can't be any worse than Unreal 2!
Duke deathmatch = the shit. Before our school understood networking, we had four computers set up in our design studies class...
I think someone has rose tinted glasses on. I didnt say the game was awfull, just that it was (is) sub par compared to fps games today. Sorry for having an opinion LoL
