The 9 inch models are the same foot print as the 7 inch, except with a 9 inch screen of course. From what we've heard, the resolution for the 9 inch would either stay the same (800x480) or 1024x768....I think most likely it will stay the same though a 9 inch screen is about max that you could use on the existing case.... Sweet. I'm ordering mine tomorrow, along with 1GB of RAM and probably a 4GB SDHC card. I hope my tuition bills don't screw me, but I'll probably be fine and since I have a job interview tomorrow (if the girl contacts me back) that's extra icing on the cake.
Windows XP will have to be custom to boot from a USB drive (ever seen while booting a comp that all your USB devices switch off and on during boot? If the OS is stored on that USB drive, it's gonna lose its connection and the boot will fail.)
I see. Oh well, part of my reasoning behind purchasing one is learning Linux anyway. As long as I can get it working with the university's Wi-Fi then I have no need to have Windows on it, anyway.
I dunno, i had dammsmalllinux on it last week via usb boot, and it ran fine. I know that people use the SDHC cards to run a fairly "stock" xp off of it.... Vista is also reported to run not bad on the system too Ryan
I have some mates in the programming world who absolutely adore it - it's a quick and efficient laptop which is perfect for the average users needs. Even some professional users I know run it as their main system, albeit with a screen and keyboard hookup, because it's so nippy and capable. Oh, and installing Windows ME on it would be dumber than a pile of dumb things for two reasons: 1) It'll run XP, and 2) You'll find more current compatible programs on Linux distros - that's before using Wine for Windows. I've seen this thing running Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion, and anyone who says this thing isn't powerful enough is obviously sillier than a box of chocolate teapots on fire. And that's pretty silly.
People always think that its under powered...but its not....hell it can run morrowind, gta san andreas..and dozens other....for a 300 buck laptop...thats pretty f*&^(%$ amazing! Ryan
the_steadster: let me know if you do sell it, I might be interested! Heck, I keep buying laptops for some inane reason
For those who (for whatever reason) are interested in playing newer games on the Eee PC, there are YouTube videos of someone running Oblivion (probably via Oldblivion) and Halo on it as well. I'll probably just use it for the occasional DOSBox.
The problem with XP on a drive like that is it writes and reads the disc a lot of times, which means it will die quickly!
That's why you edit the swap file configuration, and whatever else may read/write constantly. There are guides to help with this.
Yeah, XP won't boot. Linux will. Next time you boot XP with an iPod connected, wait for it to disconnect and reconnect, or see the flash of your optical mouse during the screen with the blue bar, it'll probably pause for a sec right when your devices flash on and off.
Hmmm...over at eeeuser.com there seems to be quite a few people who have successfully installed and booted xp from both SDHC's and usb hdd's Now, i understand what your talking about,...maybe the eeepc is different, http://www.ngine.de/index.jsp?pageid=4176 now maybe these people are simply talking from there asses to claim it works, who knows :katamari: Well, i'll put eeexubuntu on it eventually LOL Ryan
Why why why even bother with Xp? Meh just couldnt do it myself, just need to tinker and put Mint on then thats it. I will have my perfect system. Cheep portable and decent speed. Only downside is , if I get Mint on it my other half will be after one for her birthday..... in Pink.
I'm looking at eeeXubuntu. What are the advantages Mint has over that (other than personal preference)? As far as Linux goes, I'm still a pretty big newbie and I want to spend as little time fixing and tweaking as possible. My main concerns are WiFi, sound, and writing to the hard drive. Does Mint have all of that covered? Edit: Okay, so I canceled my EeePC order. I was looking at the Everex Cloudbook (http://www.everex.com/), and it's coming out at WalMart tomorrow. While I'm wary of buying another laptop from WalMart, this is using a 1.2Ghz Via C7 processor, comes with a 30GB hard drive, and the battery supposedly lasts five hours. The screen is the same size and the laptop itself is a little uglier, but it's only $50 more than the EeePC model I was going for. Edit 2: Well, YouTubeing the Cloudbook tells me that it's basically a rebranded Packard Bell "Easynote," and the one time I owned a Packard Bell taught me to never buy another. It may work well, but at this point I think I'd rather stick with something tried and true. I figured I'd put this in for anyone considering the same thing I was.
Mint is just a polished Ubuntu. All I can say is the Mints versions "just work, no messing with stuff; I cant say anything about the EEE version yet as I havent got a EEE pc yet.
