errr...no, not really if you disable the page file

If installed properly, an EeePC with WinXP will last just as long as a stock unit.

As a benchmark, i used Filemon to log my writes to the internal ssd. After about 4 or 5 hours of continuos use.....filemon only logged maybe several dozen writes....very little in actuality...

I was looking at the cloudbook myself, and it seems interesting, but ugly as fu&$....I don't care for the screen being off centered, the flimsy looking hinges, nor the overall look and build of it....

That being said...I'm sure i'll pick one up in the future for experiments

As for eeexubuntu...it was modded specifically to take care of the concerns you had......

Mine should be coming in today. Hopefully the massive amounts of snow and ice won't stop Mr. UPS :)

This is probably the coolest thing I've bought in years. Yes, the keyboard is pretty small, as well as the screen. That does not change the fact that this is a fully working computer that is smaller than all of my school books (save for the little pocket one that doesn't even count).

At this point in time, eeeXubuntu requires some work to get fully operational. After a few hours on and off I've got mostly everything working. I just need to figure out how to get this extra 917 megabytes over to my primary partition.

Did everyone else delete the backup partition? I didn't see a point in keeping it if it's on the DVD they included.

Edit: [posting from it right now :)] After messing with eeeXubuntu for a few hours (it's 2:30AM here), I'm wondering if the people who installed XP are on to something. As much as I want to learn Linux, it would be nice to have everything work without having to look up some form of tutorial to get seemingly basic items functioning.

Other thoughts; the keyboard is a little annoying. Some of my keys require a greater amount of pressure than the others, but I'm wondering if this is just a "break-in" period so to speak. As I'm typing this they're actually working much better.

The screen is also slightly fatiguing to my eyes, but it's nothing really substantial.

All in all, those are minor complaints considering the size alone. This thing is awesome.

The basic unit is £190 from eBuyer. From the US you're looking at $300, plus shipping, plus around £50 customs (VAT + import tax... VAT alone is a good £25 and you WILL get charged extra as it is a computer).

I still say don't bother, though.

I put windows xp on it, only because it was easier for me to install and have applications on removable drives (my wd passport) then it was in linux. Plus with an N-lited xp install, i still had nearly 3 gigs of free space as opposed to the 1.5 or so with linux

How stable is the N-lite XP install? How responsive is the Eeepc with XP on it?

As long as you upgrade the RAM then it's not soo bad. There is a big improvement with 1GB over the installed 512MB. On the bad side the machine is 48,000Yen with Windows XP in one flavour (4GB) in Japan.

I have a white 4G with 1024MB ram and i can say it really rocks! Build quality is very good. Very sturdy plastic. It's only a bit larger then a dvd case. It's able to play even World Of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI. Not to mention older games like Dune 2000 wich look awesome on it even on 800x480 resolution. All this for only 300$.

It's also very light, only 900 grams. And it has a very small power adapter (cellphone like).

I have XP working now, but is there any way to move My Documents over to my SDHC card? Temporary files have been set to the SDHC, so I at least have that covered.

The GIMP installed a lot of files to the SSD, but I assume it's nothing worth worrying over. The SSD was designed to be used, and I think that the whole "preserve the SSD" movement is going a little overboard (other than with things like the page file).

Now if I can get the sound drivers working I'll be gold...

But remember you must make sure the SD card is in the machine every time you boot or the machine will get confused and sulk. You can remove it, but remember to set it for Quick Removal or you'll start losing data. I would make sure any programs you use, Word for example have autobackup disabled.

Windows was pretty annoying, and it turns out other people have had sound problems. On top of that if I ever switched to 800x600 I'd have to go to the Adapter settings, change it back to 800x480, and restart.

I installed Linux Mint today, and I'm kind of wondering why I didn't just do this earlier. There are minor quirks here and there (takes three key presses to get Linux going, system doesn't fully shut off, and only sporadically can I move windows off of the screen). I had to install the wireless drivers using ndiswrapper, but other than that everything is working great. I didn't even have to download the Flash package for Firefox, which is something that's always given me trouble in Linux.

If I can get rid of these small problems with Mint I'll be satisfied.

Which version of Mint are you using? Most of the Versions are still in Beta so there will be a few bugs. I have a 8gb EEE on order hoping its going to get here in 2 weeks time and intend to run mint off it.

I'm using Mint 4 Daryna. I did a few of the tweaks suggested in the eeeXubuntu install, and one of them fixed the bug where the system wouldn't shut down. The sound driver apparently stays on until you edit the script, but it shuts down cleanly now.

Overall I'm quite impressed with Mint. I still wanted KDE (pretty sure this is Gnome), but after three operating systems I'm really not going to complain over a GUI.
