I'm after getting an Asus EEE PC for study work. Probably going to be the cheapest model as it won't get used that intenesly. I'm in the UK so looking at just over £200 - but I've heard its quite a bit cheaper in the US and considering importing, especially as the exchange rate - does anyone know how much the 2GB model costs in the US? Also if anyones got one I'd love to hear honest opinions about it.
According to stuff (uk mag) its a good laptop, it got 5 out of 5 stars. Wouldn't mind getting one of the high spec ones (8gb) and having a play with it. IF I could get Linux Mint 3.0 to run on it then I can sell my other comps.
Seems to run at about $300 - I hope I can get shipping cheapish on one. Does anyone in the States now how much it goes for in shops? Yeah I've seen all the reviews run 4-5 stars. I've never owned a linux computer before (only ever played on a mates) as I'm just used to windows. I might whack ME on it or an SD when if i get one.
I dont see the bother. Say its $300 plus $30 to ship. If customs gets your your gonna get hit for £20-30+ of fees. Even if customs dont get you then your looking at $330. Your looking at £170ish not inc paypal fees. The 4gb 512mb version is £220 at play.com. Thats not inc some other sites where you might be able to get a discount on it. So even if you get it cheap and no customs charges the most your saving is like £50ish. At least if something goes wrong you can just send it back to play/a shop. Not to mention its the 4gb version. BTW i played with one at PCworld and tbh i have tiny hands and the trackpad felt tiny even to me. If i were you i would try and find some where to have a play with one.
It's awful, I read review after review and got ready to buy one. Then when I was in PC world yesterday and they had a demo 4G model...truly awful not what I expected at all. Feels like a kids toy, has a poor screen and is very slow.
Cheers for that link - I forgot to check Play. I'm going to try one in a shop next weekend to see what its like. I hate touch pads any way and will be using a wireless mouse so I huess that doesn't matter too much. Do you think its that slow? Was that on the Linux ver.? The screen concerns me somewhat, it might hinder web browsing. I do use Opera though so I can always scale the pages down. I knew I'd get a somewhat more critical + balanced opinion here, cheers!
My 12inch iBook, 800mhz, 256mb ram, 30 gig HDD cost me just 250$ (used but in pretty nice shape), I prefer this over what the EEEpc looks to be. Only downside is it only has a CDrom drive, no DVD. Ram is upgradable to 700 whatever mb. Clearly not a power house, but with a ram upgrade it would be even better, and I have little issues with it now, running 10.4.10 (I think thats the latest)
Don't. The screen is awful. If you're intending on using it for browsing the web and researching then you'll end up wanting to throw it out of the window. If you don't already have a laptop, you can get them really cheap and lightweight enough to be a sensible alternative to the EEE.
Ignore what others are saying about it, its a great machine for the price Got mine for xmas, and honestly, asside from some apps (cad, and photoshop tbh) I've ended up using the EeePC the most. It feels pretty well built for the price, 10x better build quality than my hp, or my acer, yea its small, slightly larger than a dvd case....maybe a bit smaller than a sega saturn case (i think) The trackpad is rather small, but it works extremly well, I've had no problems doing both web work and the occasional photoshop on it without issues. The screen isn't the greatest, i noticed this myself, but it is pretty darn good. It has an amazing viewing angle on it, and some great brightness....if only the slightest bit of "grain" look in it. I can't say i've come across any ghosting either. Software wise, the default xandros os is okay, but i quickly enabled the "advanced" desktop, a normal kde interface, which worked quite well. The programs and what not ran quite well on the default ram (512) and i had several firefoxs and open offices open, and it still ran rather well. Unfortunatly, (here comes my only gripe) is the installed solid state drive. Solid state drives, like any flash drive, will eventually fail after a number of writes....the EeePC is rated for 100,000 full write cycles...which should mean you would get on average 3-5 years before sectors begin to fail. Not that concerning, considering thats quite some time...but still.....though which leads me to my next point... The thing will boot anything. load on of the dozen or so custom eeepc linux os's onto a flash drive or removable drive, and it will boot, so if the solid state drive does fail, or you want an alternative os, you can always just boot off an external drive with little hassle... I really liked the default xandros linus os on it, but i wanted an operating system that was more user friendly in terms of apps and what not, so i put a stripped down version of Windows Xp (using nlite) on it. Right now, of the 4gig drive, i have windows taking up 600ish mbs...and boots in about 10-12 seconds..... Games and apps wise, its pretty good. P64 runs pretty damm well on the unit in full screen, games like assualt-cube, marathon, and a few others also run pretty well. As an indication, almost any game up to 2005 will run on this machine. As for the keyboard....well i'm writing on it as i speak, after bout maybe 5 minutes your used to the size of it.....works very well for writing documents.... Wireless works well too......has good built in speakers........small, very small...works extremly well if you wnat a laptop for classes, but hate carrying around "normal size" machines.... Overall, despite its limited storage, the EeePC in my opinion is probably one of the finest UMPC's available for the price. Also of note, the stock unit is underclocked, and can be clocked to 900,hz...as well as with new gpu drivers...can support resolutions of somewhere around 1280x800 (i think) Edit: Don't go for the 2gb version, it has a slighty slower processor and unremovable ram. The 4G surf version is the same as the normal 4gb or the 8 gb, except without the webcam, and only 50 bucks more than the surf (350, as opposed to 299) Cheers Ryan
Put it this way, walk around with a laptop? look silly, and a theft target. Carry a eee pc? It looks like a book or ledger. Small enough to use in a cafe or restaurant without looking silly. Hackable, and best of all practical. You can hack the resolution and run higer, the screen is fine for the size. You can hook up a monitor for up to 1600 pixels as well. Great piece of hardware.
well put! last i looked there were 'bout 2 or so dozen customized operating systems designed for it....from eeexubuntu to feedora...puppy and others I put 2gb of ram in it, xp, and a 8 gb sd card (holds tmp files and some other system files) www.eeeuser.com, go and browse their site and forums.....it quickly made me make up my mind on absolutley wanting one!
I am waiting until the 22nd, until I find out if my college bills will allow me to buy one of these. I am so excited (because I'll probably wind up getting one either way), and they're such awesome looking machines. Yes, the keyboard and trackpad are really small. It is an eight-inch wide fully-fledged computer. There is nothing more badass than something like that. I'm thinking I can pick cute indie girls up with it, too. You know how girls dig "cute" things. As far as distributions go, I was thinking about eeeXubuntu, but I've looked into Puppy and I'd like to get that working instead as long as I wouldn't sacrifice compatibility, function, or hard drive capabilities (such as the disadvantage of having to save my hard drive state after I do something like type a paper).
Yes thats the feeling i got from it. I dint spend too much time on it as i was in PCworld and i dint want to spend more then 5mins in there but yeah it just felt like those kids toy learning laptop kind of things. The screen also dint look great specialy with the OS screen.
This is why you put a new operating system on it. Screenshots I've seen of the Xandros distribution that comes with the Eee PC look like "my first laptop."
The first i ever knew about this unit! its great!! and in fact, i am thinking about pushing for one of these as my new works Laptop if i can get it to sync with the desktop easy enough for when i am at base etc.
Well I researched the new OS option and this was why I was going to buy one. But after seeing it in the flesh I was thoroughly dissapointed.
I have very slender hands so I don't think the keyboard should be too much of an issue. I probably will be buying another USB mouse to go with it, though. If only there was one on display here, I'd like to mess with it in person before I buy it. I'm pretty sure I'll love it, though; I've always wanted a cheap, portable computer that I could lug around. Laptops don't quite fit the bill.
