i 100% confirm that design is very important thing for car, for me even more important than engine power, max speed etc, but i absolutely don't care how looks bios in my PC or how looks my windows or how looks my soldering station, the only thing which is really important it is how good they do their work and how handy to use them. of course it is just my point of view
I haven't used the 64drive, but the menu system does look nice. When Igor first showed me what he was doing with ED64 OS I was a bit disappointed to be honest. Sex sells. However after using the ED64 OS I really liked it. Using mainly buttons for operation rather than menus I feel makes it really quick and easy to use once you learn what buttons do what. IMO if you are buying a 64drive just because the menu system looks better I think you may be making a mistake. Now if the OS works better (maybe it does) or whatever then I can understand, but looking better does not make it operate better. Maybe you should wait a few more months before making the decision to see where ED64 OS ends up. We all know it has a few more features coming. Some of those features may change your mind. I am sure the 64drive is a great product. I know marshall worked very hard on it. I am not knocking his product at all. However we have yet to see a true unbiased head-to-head comparison of the two products.
I'm happy with ED64 OS. For me, functional is fine. If the ED64 OS was somehow open-sourced (or at least made into a library so the GUI could be separate) then the N64 scene would step up to enhance the product on your behalf.
The only option on the ED64 menu I'd like to see is to play the previously loaded game without having to flash it again after powering off and back on like other ED carts, even though flashing is super fast. But, maybe the ED64 doesn't work that way, I'm not sure. ED64 rules, anyway.
Sex sells indeed, and a somewhat nicer looking 'menu' would be ... , well, it would be nice, nothing more. On the other hand, I already have a MD everdrive and a SNES everdirve, and they rock. So, I will buy the ED64, at least, when it finally comes available again. ;-) It's cheaper, it has all the functionality I want, the 'menu look' will be in line with my other ED's, and also pretty important, I want to support Krikzz in any way I can because I really hope that his next project will be a PCE ED.
ED64 uses SRAM to load games which is volatile, but much faster than the FRAM used in previous EverDrives. So no it won't work that way.
Here's what I think about 64drive vs ED64. Both will do almost the same. They load 99% of 64 library. The time both take to load is 1 - 2 seconds, so load speed does not matter. So, what can you want more? Small images of games covers in the menu ? I can't think of features to add. Marshall said on irc, that 64drive could be able to load 64 disk drive games with "HERCULEAN" effort but he's not into that so if any of the cartridges could load 64DD games that would decide the winner of publics choice. Bottom line what I want to say is: how can you improve over 2 almost perfect pieces of hardware?
- Reverse engineer the cic and make a clone compatible with all cic versions - build in cheat support - automatic on-the-fly applying of aps/ips patches if they have the same name of the rom - memory card manager - box arts - mass production in china for easy availabiliy and a lesser price - add a t-connector so it can dump your precious savegames from your original carts before they vanish with time - custom molded backside of the case that is compatible with both NTSC/PAL consoles
there is an easy solushion for this open up the n64 in the top cover remove the screwed in plastic where the game fits to remove region cart size lock enjoy other games from other regions if its the same video standard
Not really about the everdrive64 itself, but krikzz you should change the <TITLE> of the everdrive 64 webpage on your website: http://krikzz.com/ed64.html Because it shows up as "Super Everdrive". ;-)
I'm not really sure if that's for the best. xD - mass production in china for easy availabiliy and a lesser price that is a lie, cause neo myth 64 comes from china and is more expensive, and isn't going to happen cause all carts are made by krikzz, he's just a guy not a company - add a t-connector so it can dump your precious savegames from your original carts before they vanish with time in order to make your cart looks ugly and have to mod a lot the cases, no thanks.
Aleomark already made some good points. Some of the stuff you suggest would actually raise the price of the EverDrive64 considerably. Also whether you like it or not, we already make a version with case, shell, manual, etc. It may not be as cheap as you want it to be, but it does exist. China doesn't magically make everything cheaper, especially for lower run products.
Not trying to nitpick, but:- Should say:- Just thought you might want to know that no Everdrives currently use SRAM, and Everdrives with FRAM only use it to store game saves.
No post today? :-( How can that be? On topic mode: I hope that the ED 64 comes available again soon. I'm keeping an eye on retrogate store more or less automaticvally because I promoted it temporarily as my browser's startpage. I check it a few times a day, but I'm still afraid that I will miss out on the next batch again. :banghead:
I actually have the opposite problem! I got my Everdrive64 weeks ago, but still haven't got my n64 from eBay to use it with...
