http://www.finalfantasyviipc.com Square are rereleasing FFVII on the PC with achievements and a few other improvements. I'm pretty excited about this and I'm curious to know how far they've gone in updating the graphics for modern machines. The original PC release suffered from poor quality backgrounds as they were ripped from the PSone's fairly low resolution screen. Fingers crossed they enhance the source material and stick in some widescreen support.
I'm not loving the character booster option. HP/MP is fine if you're stuck on a boss (Demon Gate) without the resources to effectively go on but gil??? Having the option to buy as much as you want whenever you want is pointless. Part of the beauty of this game for me was the constant micro-management.
I will definitely buy it as soon as it's released! I just hope it doesn't require always-on internet connection, or any other kind of crappy DRM system. Based on the sysreqs listed in the website, I'd say they definitely improved the graphics; but we'll have to wait and see.
Last time I read about it, Steam didn't force DRM on 3rd party (non-Valve) games (ie. some indie games that you purchase in Steam, you can copy the directory that contains its files and run it elsewhere without any modification). It's true that most games nowadays include DRM, and even though I'm against it, I find it acceptable as long as it doesn't affect gameplay and as long as it doesn't become a hassle for the person who chose to buy the game legitimately.
Yeah FFVII has been modded to hell for the PC, so if the only technical addition to this is just added support for newer OS's then it's pretty useless. If however they've gone back and used high resolution renders for the backgrounds and FMV sections plus added widescreen support, then it'll be interesting. Maybe they'll go crazeh and add in voice acting too, i'd actually be all for that, i somehow doubt that'll happen though. And it's freaking AERIS! :grief:
There is a video of the new version: http://youtu.be/qr4TgU4SKLc (it's in the website, kind of hidden within the wallpapers, in the Media section). Seems exactly like the original... probably adapted for new resolutions, so it doesn't look pixelated.
Well there's 0 gameplay in there, i think maaaybe there's a shot with Tifa thats her in game model for a flash of a second? It's difficult to tell if it's the YouTube compression or not, but it looks like they've gone back to the FMV elements which weren't stellar quality by todays standards and then cropped them which didn't help matters. Better than the original releases quality, maybe, but marginal and not really worth the upgrade. Could we all just agree that FFVII isn't all that fantastic and FFVIII is the best of the series?
