Just a note on this. If you planned on doing this with a Wii U, then you wouldn't get surround sound. Wii U needs hdmi directly into a surround sound receiver, due to it using LPCM audio output.
My GF was kind enough to allow me use the living room. I love her so much…I'm talking about my setup.
Very nice set up you have there thedarkpersian. I just installed a 5 meter RGB LED light strip on my TV uint today. Look sreally nice in real life, far better than what the phone pictures show. With it being RGB you can have a load of different colours. I personally like purple.
Thanks, very appreciated. At all time there is one variation of each console connected and the rest is for display only. For Sega Genesis, only the CDX is connected, I'm trying to find a JVC X'Eye because it's less fragile and valuable than the CDX, so I could preserve it; for Sega Megadrive I put the Wondermega, I'm trying to find a JVC RG-M2 because it's less fragile and valuable than the RG-M1, so I could preserve it; for Snes, I have the SFC with the cartridge converter connected; For Japanese GC there is the Q I want to preserve the Char's GC as it was brand new when I got it; For the NeoGeo Cd the top loader is hooked as I want to preserve the rarer front loader; The SMS, Saturn, Nes, TG16, PS2, PS3, PS4, DC and N64 are all connected
Cool! I had my Panny Q up for display quite a while but now decided to pack it and store it. Great console, one of my favorites. @Yakumo: That looks very slick. Do you have it synced to the sound system?
Hey Yakumo could you explain / show how you installed the LED strip? I'm planning on adding one to my living room TV as well.
It's indeed from ikea. That stand could theoricaly hold 30 consoles. I'm designing a new one that could hold 40 not counting the top shelf. Each boxes are getting a Plexiglas door with hinges that could hold it open while a controller is connected. The back of each shelf box is closed to prevent the DAMN dust and for some of those hot running machines (ps3...) there would be a fan at the back of the box to suck out the hot air. The fan would go on at the same time as the colour changing LEDs that luminates each box. I should start building it soon.
Not yet but I was thinking of adding a Raspberry Pie to sync the colours with those on the screen. It would then look more like an expanded TV screen. I've seen videos of this feature in action and it does look very impressive. Sure, it's not that pretty around the back of the screen but I can show you . What I'll do tonight is make a quick video of how it was installed (very simple) and how it looks in motion. I'll record using my phone in 4K at 60fps. This should eliminated the strobe effect some colours have when videoed. My DSLR can do 24fps, 30fps, 80fps, 100fps and 120fps but no 60fps! What an odd choice.
Very nice Yakumo. The syncing of the sound would likely get annoying after a while. The wall will flash and just get distracting, best to have a low warm colour of light.
Hi Yakumo, I really like the colour changing and your setup. What would you suggest if lets say I wanted to put a stripe in each boxes of my entertainment unit? I mean is it possible?
Some are powered by USB, some are powered by a powersupply. To have each on a different section, would involve power for each strip. Anything is possible if you have the connections.
Most led strips run on 12v for my setup I just use a single 2amp wall wart. The most annoying thing about lighting up cube shelves is it takes a lot of LEDs to light them nice (if you want it to look like some sort of shop display). For my setup I need about 25meters of led strips to light my console shelves. good thing is led strips are usually 1 per meter shipped
Oh yeah, it's possible but as HEX1GON said some are powered by USB. This would not be a good solution. You should buy a 5m strip which can be cut up and connected via wires soldered to the connecting joints. Or you can be supper lazy and do what I did and wire a single 5m strip across everything. It's not pretty to look at but since its hidden behind the TV and under the unit it can't be noticed. I'll make a video tonight when I get home. Please check back in 10 hours or so.
Here you go guys, as promised a video of how the LEDs are set up. It's not tidy let's just say that
That made me remember about the Philips Ambilight LCD TVs, wonder what happened to that line of products, never saw newer models coming out. Btw, great video, thanks for sharing, looks awesome!
Thanks a lot for the video Yakumo. Good job fitting everything in place. I wouldn't call that lazy at all. Like you said, i also think 5 meters is too much. For what i'm planning, i'm looking for a kit like this one: 4 strips and the interlink connectors. Simple but that's just what i want. Unfortunately the online store from the video charges 60 dollars for it and the cheapest shipping option to me is 41 dollars. In the end, it's simply too much for a led kit. And since i can only find the "5 meters kit" like yours around here, i might have to cut the strips and then buy the extra interlink connectors. I'll go check some construction stores this weekend and see what i can find.
