Keep in mind he is on a MAC so he will need MAC equivalents to a lot of the suggest Windows applications being suggested. How did your install of Parallels and Windows go samcro? It may help if you just drop the disc in your MAC and browse the disc for the dates of the files that are stored on the disc. It would be an easier first step.
The unreadable disc is always worth an attempt at polishing with Brasso if there is nothing left to lose. Just be damned sure you have nothing left to lose as it tends to make the disc destroy lasers in the future and any real value. Of course a coaster has $0.00 in value to start with. EDIT: To any potential naysayers: meh. It works when there is nothing left to lose.
Yea I'm just taking this as helping him figure out what he has. If it is more than that great if not, hey at least we helped him.
For some reason the mac wont even register the disk in the drive, finished installing parallels and windows but it hasnt picked up optical drive for some reason...i do have an old pc in the shed running xp, but the cd drive failed years ago..not having much luck here, if i wasnt selling the disk, id upload the image from our workmlinux machines, which i may do anyways after the sale
Is it only with that disc you tried others in it? irc re2 features dummy redbook data as the cuesheet here suggests http://redump.org/disc/340/ , try a audio cd.
Thanks for the update. I'm sure someone that is a little more MAC savvy would love to help out but I'm not a MAC guy unfortunately. Best of luck on finding a good solution that works so we can go further with identifying what it is you actually have. Just be prepared for a lot of nay-sayer since you haven't been able to get good enough proof as to what you have. Honestly wish I could help you out some more but I'm still hoping this turns out to be something good. Edit: Perhaps some details on the MAC you are using may help out for example the OSX version you use. That way someone could suggest a compatible app. Perhaps Bootcamp would work better than Parallels?
I might be able to help with the mac issue. what exactly does it do? does it not notice the disc in the drive, do you get a read error, or does it say there is an issue with the disc (damaged dirty)? I have no real experience with Parallels though. I would try a few rounds of tooth paste before stepping up to brasso, tooth paste is less abrasive and I've saved a couple discs using it. Also, if possible many video games and Record stores offer disc resurfacing which can be very useful. Many places that sell used discs of any kind have one that they use to clean discs before putting them up for sale.
Optical drives in Macs aren't any different these days from those in a PC. In fact the only real difference between a Mac and a PC is the price tag, logo on the side of the case and some "Trusted Computing Platform" hardware that OSX latches onto to ensure it is a "genuine" Mac that it is being installed onto. If it doesn't recognize the disc there is either a problem with the disc itself or a problem with the optical drive. The latter is easily ruled out by popping in another CD and seeing what happens. Also: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/why_doesnt_parallels_see_my_cddvdrom_drive_in_windows_xp.html This might be why you aren't able to use your optical drive in Parallels. Seen the same problem happen to people running VMWare.
Ok, with mac osx, the drive wont pick up the disk, but will pick up all other disks, except psx disks. when running parallels, the drive doesnt even exist in my computer. I tried the disk in my dreamcast with bleem, and it loads upto the ps logo with sony computer entertainment japan, the screen goes black but i can here something when i turn the volume all the way up on the tv. Then i get sound freeze. Jus wish i had a chipped psx.
interesting disc but does capcom discs normally look a bit different?correct me if i am wrong thanks for the pic..
maybe you can run the disc on your pc or other pc and make a screen of the files and folders??that would help
Very exciting thread, hope it turns out to be real! Oh, and the image(s) KH2K4 posted just shows the text from the disc pic you showed earlier, except it's upside-down and back to front.
I was attempting to unswirl it a couple of characters / symbols are in the wrong direction though. Corrected
All characters are in the wrong direction =p But we already know what it says so there's not much point in it anymore. I think it's safe to say though that whatever this is, it isn't an original disc from Capcom. At least, I'm yet to see a prototype burned on a silver with text swirling around like that =p Plus they left out the プ and instead wrote フ for カプコム. If they were Japanese I don't think that would happen since anyone working there would know their own companies name =p Plus the text as I've pointed out isn't even natural Japanese, I'm pretty sure if you were to try to say "pushing on the edge of release", they'd use something much more logical like リリースが迫る", not literally "端に押す", which just sounds unnatural.
