Microsoft should just buy them to use the Sega name for the next Xbox in Japan. Maybe it will sell there if they call it a Sega console.
Another day, another "oh why sega, why!" thread SEGA is dead, it wont come back. The kind of talent that used to roam those offices is long gone and many of them were so pissed off by management at the time that some are even pleased to be somewhere else. But lets dream-on anyway;-) How could SEGA make a comeback? though question: the fact is the market is very different from the Dreamcast years. Services are the new deal, with Steam becoming a powerhouse even when its only software, it went from being a launcher for HL2 to a DoD service and now its going social too. Its not the hardware anymore, is all software: for little money you could create a cheap-o SoC powerful enough to surpass the wii, and get partnerships with TV manufacturers to install them on their TVs. That, coupled with a Steam-like service would give you an entire userbase at the fraction of the cost that a console would. The other option would be a portable, since thanks to smartphones now highend mobile CPUs are dirt cheap. In another post I showed how the new OMAP SoC would make a portable at least twice as powerful as the PSP. But even then you've to sell it, and as sony shows, that aint easy. IMO I would make it into a phone, since even while a contract would be more expensive, the big majority of consummers would ratter get the phone for free (or next to nothing) and pay fees for 2 years than having to put down $300 or more for the phone. Plus you get a direct distribution line to users, like itunes on the iphone. This might happen, but will SEGA do it? nope, they wont: it takes iniciative to make this kind of stuff, and they ran out of that with the Dreamcast. Simply put: if there was any initiative left at SEGA they wouldnt be releasing such craptastic games all the time...
Do you actually WANT sega to go back to its FORMER glory? They need to get their heads out of their asses and do new stuff, and find some new glory.
The thing that stinks.... is that sega has a great stable of franchises wth potential to be great games.... but with the "Exodus" of thier best talent.. and what seems to be rushing development or bring in other developemnt teams to pick up the slack... the potential is rarely fulfilled. Part of me would like to see what a company with good funding and understanding (respect?)for its franchises could do with Sega properties...
Such a useless thread full of useless posts. Anyway I agree with the more reasonable posters, just be glad Sega is around after all the previous blunders. I enjoy my Yakuzas, Bayonettas and All-Star Racings. You silly ill-wishers gtfo.
Let's just hope Sonic 4 kicks butt. They have been licensing crappy handhelds for a while, as well as a few "plug-directly-into-your-TV" things. The GenMobile has so much potential, but no 2-player, cheap quality, and limited compatibility make it inferior to the Nomad even.
For Sega to regain their "past glory", they need to bring back Phantasy Star to its roots. They need to resurrect Jet Set Radio. They need to do something about Panzer Dragoon. They need to stop thinking stuff wont sell unless they cater to every furry on the planet. They need to stop writing SONIC on every single game title. And... they... need to stop putting all talent/focus on doing yearly Yakuza releases in Japan (+are those games really profitable? Every new one seems to contain so many character likenesses, B and C celebs and other licenses that those alone have to cost just as much as the full production of the previous game cost.) How do they even do it? Ever since the first one came out in Japan, they've released a new one there every year.
I'm just going to keep celebrating what Sega has given me, instead of trying to speculate and ask for more.
Sega hasn't given me anything but a massive headache as I tried to cancel my Phantasy Star Universe (Xbox 360) account... and a disturbing wake up call as I somehow shelled out money to pick up all Sonic releases on XBLA... (though, they have published some neat stuff this gen...) After Burner Climax and Outrun Online Arcade might end up (as I currently fear and suspect them of) becoming their most positive self-branded achievements this gen, though :/
If Sega wants to regain their once legendary status they need to forget the past and stop milking their once great titles with sub-par sequels. When the genesis came out it was great because it was a revolutionary system. We suddenly had near perfect arcade ports. Sports games with the correct number of players on the field, and more importantly fantastic new IP's that were a must play. Fast forward a decade and that is what made the Wii a success. It was different than everything else out there. The first system that didn't target gamers, rather they targeted the non-gamers with a system that didn't require you to be a hardcore gamer. You could pick it up and play a simple game without much knowledge or skill. The point is Sega must forget their past and work on creating new IP that will attract people who don't buy a game because of the publisher, rather buy the game because they want to play it. Sega has tarnished the past and will never be able to bring it back to us, instead they need to hire some young programmers and visionaries to create new games that appeal to many different people. Sega became famous because they made a quality product that used fresh new ideas. Sega has fallen into the rut that many game producers are in. I no longer look forward to the next madden or NCAA game that gets released, the sims and sim city games no longer interest me, 1st person shooters and fighting games all seem like low quality clones. I look for games now that are different than the cookie cutter games. Guitar hero is one of the greatest success stories of the last 5 years. Why? They were unlike anything else out there. Once they started releasing unimaginative sequels that offered very little in the way of new ideas the genre has shown a big decline. Simply put Sega needs to do the same that any aging company needs to do. They need to change and become relevant or else they will fade to black. Fade away like all the ice companies and die or mutate into the new convenience store of the video game industry.
Well i don't want to feed the trolls but i have seen this link, hoax/spam? http://n4g.com/news/545242/sega-will-make-a-new-console http://translate.google.com/transla...m/comments.php?catid=4&id=55129&sl=auto&tl=en
Crap that I am sure is coming from the one and only Zack Morris that we banned for constantly posting bullshit pulled from his ass as undeniable fact.
A user-created news in a crappy put together site, its got to be true! Seriously, even the name of that guy sounded fake. WRONG, it was a blatant rip-off of a much older idea, another example that you can repackage anything as long as you have enough budget for marketing. That was the problem with GuitarFreaks, it didn't catch on because they didnt had the budget to ad western copyrighted songs, nor was it as heavily promoted as GH. And since we were talking about SEGA, a big reason why the DC collapsed was that it was running on fumes, with a marketing budget for NA launch of 3 million, nothing!
Do I even have to say anything? The magics still there its just that Sega have become lazy. I mean look at the Yakuza series. I think its one of the best series's Sega have put out in recent years.
