My PS2 Tool is currently in pieces on the table upstairs. As soon as I can get a KHS 400 A laser I'll be able to test again. OE is going to have a look at the IC cable as I think it might need repair work. If it has been too badly damaged or can't be repaired I'll be looking to purchase one.

I tested the dvd drive from the 2nd Tool, (3rd Tool is the one I'm gonna make spare parts of), it launched successfully two ntsc/j dvd and the psx update cd.
It couldn't read the utility CD 1.00, the psbbn CD 0.32, the pal demo dvd or some burned discs(CD or DVD), dsedb displays the following:
The IC cable appears to be in bad condition, but that doesn't prevent the drive from working, not fully working, but working nonetheless, the drive is old I guess...
    I haven't test the 3rd Tool's dvd drive yet.

The good thing is you can control the Tool without a Pc nearby, only a monitor and a keyboard.

And while I'm at it, the blue reset button on top of the Tool resets only the EE and IOP, not the PC side, as if you type "dsreset 0 0", or "reset 0 0" while in dsedb.

My 2nd Tool use an old version of the bios, and an old version of the dsnet package too, I'll probably update all that soon.

...Soooo, did we ever work out what the definitive way was to launch either a debug disc or a retail disc?

Which was favoured...The target manager approach or the linux/tool approach?

Any chance of a definitive guide/s?

    TIA

I havn't tried the PS2 Target Manager but SN Systems usually have some really nice tools so I would recommend trying to go that way :)

If you have a windows powered pc near the Tool, the best thing to use is SNsystem's Target Manager.
With a linux machine you can use dsedb from it, and if you only have a monitor and a keyboard, use dsedb directly on the Tool.

I'd expect that you should be able to run dsreset on the TOOL locally too. But, I can't confirm as I never logged into it directly. What has worked for me was copying dsreset to a Linux box and entered the following:

    [adam@localhost bin]$ ./dsreset -d 192.168.0.9 2 100

192.168.0.9 being the TOOL's IP address

dsreset's options are as follows (use --help as a command switch):
    dsreset (Version 1.2.0 Tue Feb 13 19:59:03 JST 2001)
    Usage: dsreset [<option>]... [<ebootp> [<ibootp>]]
    <option>:
-d <host>[/<port_offset>] set hostname and port offset of manager
-d /<port_offset> set port offset of manager
-d <host>[:<port>] set hostname and port number of manager
-ncmv do not check manager version
-poweroff power off (only B3 system)

You can return back to normal booting with:

    [adam@localhost bin]$ ./dsreset -d 192.168.0.9 0 0

Sadly it isn't looking good for the PS2 Tool unit I have. It is clearly an older model and as such I am stuck trying to obtain and Sony KHS-400A laser. These lasers were in the very earliest of units. After 2mths the workshop in town gave up trying and have suggest I try eBay.

eBay is the last place I am going to find a working laser! Most are "sold as seen" by people knowingly palming off their duff laser units. "Untested" tends to mean "I couldn't get a bloody thing out of it, so I am palming it off on you...moron!"

I can see B & C type lasers but nothing in Catagory A.

What makes it worse is the IC has been passed as 100% fine. Not a single strand damaged, despite it's shoddy appearance. The internals have been checked over and everything on my PS2 Tool is actually in working order... except the laser.

So, one thing stands between me and glory! lol

The firmware of the PS2 Tool cannot be upgraded regarding using different lasers as far as the workshop were concerned.

    Hi,

do the early TEST's use KHS-400A (the 10xxx models)? im guessing they do as they look to be almost identical to the v0/v1 Jap machines?

If so, i *might* be able to sort one - will have to have a look at the 10xxx Test#s i have and see what kind of state they are in.

on a slightly different note, could you tell me the dip switch setup you are using ( i have been trying to test some Tool's that i have but i just get a blank screen from the VGA output (i get the network info from the AV Multi Out - everything seems to be fine - i just dont get any output on the VGA side - if i use my decent TFT monitor i get 'signal out of range, as if the resolution was too high/low or the refresh rate is someting weird?) - mind you i have no idea what i'm doing do that probably doesn;t help :)

one other small thing (sorry to go slight off cue!) - what is the difference between the 1000x and 1500x TOOLS ? (apart form the pretty cool dark blue colouring of the 1500x)?

    Cheers

    matt

From what I've scavenged off the web, the T15000 is a T10000 with some performance analysis stuff built in.

As for the TOOL dipswitch settings - FWIW, mine are set 01001011 (from 1-8, 0=off, 1=on). The purposes of each setting have been mentioned here on the board in the past, I'll see if I can find em/someone here'll probably know.

Oh - any chance of pics of the T15k?

Hi and welcome to a very long and rather complicated thread. In the interest of fairness we really should dig out the information and make it available to you rather than have you wade through pages and pages for often buried material.

    1) The dip switches as mentioned above are correct, however 1 of those dip switches controls NTSC / PAL. I shall dig that particular dip switch up in a second (can't locate the details and type).

    2) The VGA port you need to use in order to get a signal from the Tool is hidden underneath one of those little metal plates at the rear of the machine. One of the VGA outputs is not used. It is a strange machine.

We have pages & pages of information to assist you. As you are getting the Network Information via Multi-out, your units are booting perfectly well, you are just using the wrong VGA port! ;-)

    3) I am buying an NTSC NR Reader from you, but astonished at the other material you seem to have at your disposal at present! I would imagine the early Test units in the 10xxx range would utilise the same laser. A shame to break any up however. Then again I would seriously appreciate the assistance as frankly KHS 400A lasers appear rather rare these days.

    4) I have never noticed any difference in the colour of the Tool units? Have you got images?

    5) Do you have access to spare English manuals for the Test / Tool systems? I have PDF format information but looking to obtain the originals.

    6) From your information I would assume you are comfortable / familiar with taking various consoles to pieces?

Parris to the rescue!I'd forgotten about that sneaky hidden VGA port!

Thanks for that Limey, I was going to dash through and look, but you beat me to it. Just in the middle of setting up a printer share on my network and had to finish that first.

Mattcp, you'll more than likely want to ensure you have the correct settings for dip switch on the front of the unit too. You should be booting the Tool up in "CD/DVD drive" & "Tool" settings. You'll have no doubt found the little black trap door at the bottom left of the facade?

You'll also want to have a look at Unclejun's very helpful information regarding the PS2 Tool running software. If you have a copy of Target Manager (found on SNsystems ProDG PS2) then you'll be able to access the Tool from a PC.

There are other means of doing this, however UJ is your man to discuss this with as he has managed to get his unit to behave itself. Unlike most of us who remain in the repair stages.

    Thanks guys!

i will have another play later on and see how i go.

the T15000 i have (only have the one sadly) is a very dark blue colour - not black like the T10000's - it's quite subtle but does look pretty cool!

re. sets of docs - yes i do have several sets of varying version numbered manuals (some are black - i think version 2? some are a cyan colour and i think a lot more recent - version 5?)

I am more than happy taking stuff apart yea :) i do some console repair work on regular consoles quite often.

i don't have any PC software (proDG etc.) sadly, as from the threads i have read this does seem the easiest way!

    thanks again

    Matt

In the dim and distant past I remember stumbling across a list (not sure how accurate it was as I never used it) of Playstation units and the relevant laser values. Having gone through my bookmarks it doesn't look like I put it into "Favourites". I shall have another look, but if anyone knows of a fail safe way of establishing the exact laser inside a closed unit I'd love to know too.

What SCPH numbers are on the rear of the machines you have?

Well, well! I love contradictory information, especially when backed with proof!

Ages ago a poster mentioned replacing the Type A laser with a B or C. I said I would consider it so long as I knew it wasn't going to harm my early PS2 Tool. The other factor being that the metal part of the laser was slightly different.

Added to this a guy I know is a professional repairer of ALL consoles basically was very sceptical about placing the wrong value laser into the Tool incase it did any damage.

Okay, so Mattcp has actually done it! Yep using a T15000 he replaced the hard to obtain type A with a type C and it works fine. Apparently some dude in Florida sent him a duff type A and he thought "what the heck!" plonked in a type C and off he went.

I thought I would place this information here for discussion. I am obviously looking at an earlier unit. Does anyone think this sort of tinkering will kill my unit?

Part of me is thinking "what are you losing?" as I really wouldn't want people damaging viable Test units or early Japanese builds just to get this PS2 Tool up and running. Type C are a hell of a lot easier to obtain and if it does work would save a Test unit from being cannabalised.

The other aspect is that I am not sure what stage Matt is actually at and whether he has been able to run a test on the laser. He may have placed the laser into the unit successfully, however does it work?
