One will be kept for spare parts - I do not trust this machine, it likes to frustrate me! I can see a day I'd need to find another PCI card for example, so I am taking Matt up on his offer.

Did you ever try plugging a PS2 USB keyboard into the Tool UJ? Does it work as I have just bid on one to complete the Linux system!

Yes the usb connectors on the Tool work so does any usb keyboard, but I couldn't go further than the install screen of linux (for ps2) because the T10k doesn't recognize the external hdd.
You found a new keyboard on its own?
    already have the mouse?

There's a company in Clydebank (roughly 5miles from here) that had a job lot of PS2 official keyboards and mice. Over the last few months I've been looking at them and thinking "I should get the set" and of course I just recently obtained the Linux software & VGA cable set on AG. So, the keyboard & mouse will set me back roughly £6.

I'll need to get another network adapter and a 40Gb HDD. No rush as frankly I've got the harder parts to obtain. Just hoping my Dell TFT will work with it.

When you say the T10k doesn't recognise the external HDD, is that perhaps a fault with just your unit?

I think the TOOL's external HDD is connected by PCMCIA? on the back.

Yeah it does, the HDD comes with it, but as the Tool unit I have has the card slot I thought it would eventually work once I got things moving along.

Just to update still no go with Retail NTSC-U on mine (tried a second game now), even with jumper number 5 set to NTSC.
PS1 games also no go, but can confirm any region PS2 masterdisc's.

And the External DTL-H10030 HDD kit is for the DTL-T10000(H) as I have found a manual. Presumably the 10000(KH) & 15000(KH) are also compatible.

No mention of previous models, so I would suggest they are not compatible despite the PCMCIA slot.

And just to ensure we are being specific about each item: It's a 40Gb / 5400rpm Sony HDD with a DC 12v, 1.5A adaptor. The card is a DTL-H10010, the HDD is a DTL-H20400 and the PSU is listed as DTL-H10020.

The Ethernet socket on the PCMCIA card is 10/100BASE(T/TX) cat5, which is standard.

The presence of the PCMCIA slot, puzzles me - what is different between an enabled T10000H model & an non-H one? Is it just a firmware/software difference, or something physical? Seems odd to have the PCMCIA slot sitting there taunting you, when they were so careful to blank out/cover things like the usable VGA out!

My TOOL is an H & I have the DTL-H10030 HDD kit (obtained separately & alas, with no manual other than a single sheet) - I will try to dedicate some time this weekend to playing with it. What's the best way to access the HDD - run something on the PS2 side that'll access the drive? I'm assuming that the HDD is on the PS2 side, right? I tried looking for it on the unix side, but couldn't find it.

limey, any hdd enabled software for the ps2 should work, like the ps2 linux or the bbnav.
Atleast the hdd works fine with the scph10k...

OK, I'll give that a try.

BTW - hopefully not too silly a question...
Do you guys run stuff as root, which is potentially dangerous in any unix based system, or have you created user accounts for yourselves on your TOOLs? If the latter, what activities on the TOOL definately require you to be logged in as root?

It's not in production or facing the big bad world so you might as well keep using root but I created a seperate user and when required use the command "su" to gain root privileges.

sorry for the delay - i'll take some tommorow definatly!.

one galring difference is the lack of the 'DVD/EMU' switch on the front - it just has 'TOOL / WS'

    Cheers

Thanks - I'll probably set myself up a user account just to be safe from myself. BTW, I'm impressed how quickly you've come up to speed on TOOLs.

So far, mine has run all the NTSC-U/J/PAL retails I've thrown at it, with one exception - World Championship Snooker 2004 - that one hangs with the following reports:

    # Initialize Scratch Pad...
    # Restart Without Memory Clear Done.
    app cmd line
    Rebooting IOP with DNAS280.IMG
    *** Resetted
    *** Resetted
Remaining QWS of Vu1 Data Mem = 395
    dsedb ?>

I thought it might be having problems with net-enabled games (after the DNAS280.IMG loading), but it runs Colin McRea Rally 2005 without problem - I'm wondering what QWS is about?

I also tried a CD-R proto, but that failed - will try making some burned masters later, to see how they fare.

A question: Has anyone figured out how to put the PS2 side into component display mode? I suspect the thing is in RGB mode by default, so I don't see anything if I try a component cable.

Lord above! Clearly grammar is not a strong point in the gaming industry. That should read "*** Reset, *** Reset". Resetted indeed. :-(

I am clearly not the only person to be somewhat irked by the poor use of English: http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=70776

I used reset 2 100 in all cases I tried. What do the 2 arguments after reset represent?

That is ALL I needed to hear. No other information is relevant. That's my favourite series and frankly I was hoping it was going to work. Thanks for confirmation.
