Apparently people are talking like sailors and forget many of the people here have kids,
    or are under 15.

I hate to do it, but I will be creating a harsh words filter in the next week unless
people can commit to abstaining from profanity.

No offense, but this is a load of bullshit. ASSEMblergames is not (or shouldn't be) a kiddie day care program. We shouldn't have to censor ourselves to suit their needs. If you're concerned about children seeing mature content, then you should do the exact opposite: make users agree that they are 18 years or older. Lots of forums do this. I see no reason why we couldn't do the same. If this is something worth discussing, then maybe we should do a poll.

Also, I think it would be a good thing if we removed some of the kids from the forum. If you haven't noticed, ASSEMblergames has seen somewhat of a decline in quality of posts lately. I think making the site age-restricted might help assuage that problem.

I'd say this site is pretty tame compared to most other gaming related forums. I haven't seen in increase in vulgarity - the amount has been pretty stagnant the entire time I've been here. o_O I don't think this is necessary.

I would agree that this website isn't exactly targeting kids. That is, I don't know many kids these days who go around looking for FM Towns Marty consoles or how to fix Laser Actives. I think if your trying to avoid "Sailor" talk, then you have a lot bigger problems on the Internet than assemblergames.com. Especially considering that I don't see it as being that bad to begin with. It's not like we're talking about neo-geo.com here.

There is light use of swearing on the boards I reckon. None of us go on rants with swearing every second word etc. I agree with the others, kids just shouldn't be using the forums regardless we had a few sign up around the same time and their threads were the same. "what's the best game you played" with lack of grammar. :/ If this community is viewed as mature conversation board, then those make the forums look worse than someone dropping the occasional F-bomb.
Users with kids are on the forums, not the kids... Kids wouldn't take much notice of walls of text, unless it's offensive images (that I can agree on). Have you gotten complaints or is this your own evaluation? I don't see it to much of an issue to require censoring unless you've gotten various complaints.

What level of profanity? There seems to be an increase in the use of the word "fag" recently for reasons of which I'm unsure and that I'm not terrible cool with.

I'll work to create PG-13 rated posts though.

I would hope this site to not becoming a daycare. As for the talking like sailors I see what you mean ,but the naval officers and sailors I know don't swear. I'm not saying that these fifteen years old don't know of socially intolerable words because when I'm out I here kids cursing. I don't want to play parent here because I don't have kids ,but it seems these kids just are much the same as when we were growing up.

Considering the language I hear coming out of kids these days, this site is pretty tame. I don't hear most of us saying everything is hella gay, or calling ourselves the n word, or forcing as many four letter words in a sentence as possible, all in a squeaky high pitched voice. I'm really not concerned with children seeing bad words on an internet forum. If their parents gave a poo-poo about that they wouldn't let them run amok on the internet in the first place.

There has? Other than the minor incident in the funny images and videos thread, I don't recall the word being used that often.

I've noticed it being used as a suffix on a rare occasion (tourneyfag, tumblrfag, etc), but calling someone a tourneyfag has a different meaning than just straight up calling them a fag. Plus the word is used more often as a general insult than it is directed towards homosexuals. Reminds me of this episode of South Park.

Not seen much profanity around at all. either way kids gotta learn to swear somewhere, and its probably not going to be a forum on the internet.

Don't see why content should be censored / filtered by the host, just because the kid's parents are neglegent in their duties.

but hey, it's all up to Mr Assembler,

a better way if possible would be to have younger members in a group and filter it for them alone. :)

I am no friend of these Language Filters. I agree with la-li-lu-le-lo to include a feature to make users agree that they are 18 years or older.
But thats up to Kevin anyway :)

I suppose the question is whether children are productive enough members of the community to warrant it.

If a filter is absolutely needed, I think this suggestion is the way to go. I'm not a fan of profanity, but I see no reason to filter it out for adults.

I don't think there should be an age floor (or ceiling).

As for the language filter, I haven't noticed any spike in bad language, but I haven't been looking, and it doesn't bother me anyway. In all seriousness though, given what we are discussing, there should be no need to use colorful language. I get anxious around censorship, but this site has a specific focus and bad language, quite frankly, not only doesn't fit in with that focus, but is detrimental to that focus, children or not (just because you are free to use bad language doesn't mean you should use bad language). ASSEMbler's judgement has also earned my trust when it comes to moderation.

A little difficult to implement as compared to a forum-wide censor, plus people can just set a different age to circumvent that.
I don't think I swear too often, but by all means implement a censor. Plus, we can have it swap the words with other silly phrases.

One of the reasons why I love this forum (despite my limited activity) is because of the mature, reasonable community. I have never seen a user on this site who is not a spammer ever abuse profanity; with the rare occasion that it does come up, it is almost always used in a mature way to simply provide humor or improve upon the original idea of the post, never to assault anyone. Most children that can read (or even simply understand music lyrics/ TV) have already been exposed to profane language, and because our society has allowed this once unacceptable behavior to continually grow, it has almost become allowed. If people are worried that their children will be exposed to adult language on this board, then they are either far too overprotective, or simply naive of the culture around them. Therefore, it should not be your responsibility to shield children, but rather the parent's responsibility to discuss with their kids why they should not use these words, because in today's society it is ultimately inevitable for children to come across them one way or another.

    Just my two cents.
