This whole thing is spiralling out of control. Ignore the pussy and move on. If he doesn't want to put the filter on his browser for whatever reason then fuck him. Not our problem. world shouldn't have to conform because 1 country dislikes everything else. Same thing here. Pretty much everyone else commenting here has no problem with the language here. Just 1 or 2.

We already have a NSFW rule, but yeah. I could understand pics since you have no way of knowing what it will be until you scroll down, then see it and possibly get in trouble, but what boss is going to be hovering over your office computer or phone and say "Good work! Your contributions to the workplace have be-- woah woah woah, time out. Did that post have the word "shit" in it? What kind of smut are you reading? That's it, you're fired!"

If someone were really monitoring your work Internet usage closely enough to pay attention to individual words, they'd probably be more pissed off at you spending time on a video game message board than any of the actual words.

You can argue about the proper age for kids to use/read profanity all you want, but I think that's really besides the point of: how does profanity enhance conversations about preserving old videogame hardware? Hopefully, this forum will outlast all of us, and I hope, in the year 2112, when someone finds an N64 in their grandfather's attic and Googles something about it, they'll find this place and they can get the info they need, without having to read through things like off topic posts, personal feuds, profanity laden comments and misinformation.

Like I said earlier, just because you are free to do something, like use bad language, it doesn't necessarily mean you should.

It has nothing to do with being free to do something , honestly it just comes out. There is nothing wrong with cursing once in a while. If you people cannot stand other people cussing every now and then it's time to move on , especially on a forum with grown ass men that can speak their mind however they would like too.

I dunno, but luckily this site covers more than just that. General gaming news, off-topic (including the political thread and the random internet funnies thread), WTB/WTS, member articles/user content, living in Japan, modding/hacking hardware, software downloads and beta releases, etc.

Rarely does profanity work it's way into topics regarding the preservation of video game hardware. It usually happens in other topics.

Of course, but I choose to. It doesn't hurt anyone physically, and it's not like they will only hear it from me or the next user. They'll hear it in many other places.
People need a thick skin for the internet, it's used by lots of people not 23698126391236289182569124764923 silverfoxes.

Somewhat ironic considering the most swearing I experience online comes from kids. Not just online either. I suggest catching a bus with a bunch of 10+ kids on it and listening in to their conversations.

    Maybe that's just Australia though..

Not just us, mate. Family friend owns a lodge in the Snowy Mountains and kids that had been transfered (sister schools or visiting relatives, that kind of thing) going along for the typical school vacations often end up staying there so I've heard the same sort of behavior from kids from various places in the world saying pretty much every possible word that could be taken as being offensive under the sun in the span of a few minutes.

Even some of the stuff they were spewing could put us to shame in terms of foul language commonly used!

If a filter really MUST be used then it should be optional, if there's such an issue with it then why does everyone on the forum as a whole need to babysit someone's children? I was online without a filter at a young age and have seen a great deal worse than swearing and provided that it IS a gaming forum - any multiplayer games or ones that they may have had access to with voice chat, the kids will have heard it all which makes having a filter completely and utterly bloody redundant.

Oh hell no it's not just Austrailia. I've been in that exact situation (on the bus during the school run) and the language would make the Osborne family wince. In fact I'm almost convinced we have the most foul mouthed youth in Europe in this country.

Get off my lawn! Damn kids...

And yeah, I played GTA online for a brief period and felt like I was babysitting a bunch of other people's children. I'm not against profanity per se, but having to listen to infants swearing at every one else is completely off putting. I think I lasted about 3 minutes before switching it off.

Surely the simple solution here would be to ask for a date of birth upon sign up, not to stop people coming in but just to cover the site legally, if you lie about your age then there's nothing you can do to complain if you get offended by something or a parent catches you on the site and sees something they don't like because it'll be you the user who has broken the terms and conditions.

Additionally, add a disclaimer stating that a user may see occasional swear words from time to time or inappropriate content, but follow up with a notice saying that mods try to make the site as friendly as possible for everyone but they cannot monitor the site 24/7.

Lastly fire out a revised T+C's email to all existing members to get them to agree all of the above, and then instruct mods to pay attention to anything that is considered gratuitous. Although it's all down to opinion as to what is considered offensive and what is not. I think we can all tell the difference between someone saying for f*cks sake when they're amusingly frustrated/annoyed by something and you f*cking asshat c*nt I wish you were dead.

I'm against the censorship for the simple fact that I don't want to come here and have to overthink what I'm typing for fear of being warned and then hit with a ban hammer. I type colloquially as I find this an easy going place to hang out and I don't want that to change.

I think we shouldn't have censorship, just because ONE person doesn't like the big bad words on the internet. I think it's about time we forget about this and close the thread it's just bringing down the forum. Maybe it's just me but has anyone noticed the decline of active users since this all started??

anyway that's all I'm going to say on the matter...

It's not a legal matter, it's one person who has a problem and is too lazy to fix it himself.

silverfox, here's my honest advice to you. Request ASSEMbler to lock this thread. Stay off the site for a week or two, just to cool off and let the issue die down. Come back with the profanity filter we showed you, and then you can view the site without worrying about seeing anything you don't want. Nothing will have changed, no one will be upset, you get what you want, and so does everyone else. Everyone wins.

If you have any issues similar to this, then I'm sure a solution already exists for it. Ask us and I'm sure someone will help you. Just don't expect the community to conform to your standards or accommodate to your needs.

One of the many reasons I almost never play online. Very annoying.

It's not, but that won't stop some idiot from trying to take it to court. No lawyer in their right mind would take that case. They would get laughed out of court, but it could still be an inconvenience for ASSEMbler. No real reason not to include an age requirement when creating an account. If nothing else it'll cover ASSEMbler and the site's ass.

First thing I do in any online match is mute everyone. It shouldn't have to be like that but it is.

I'm sure that's an option. But for me, that only solves one of the things I hate about playing online. Just not my thing.

"Fag" and "faggot" are harsh words, so ban the tards who use them.
