    Careful what you wish for...
I can't get my head around why people are so interested in his videos- they're god awful.
    ...

I'm going to say yes for an IRC. I much prefer it over a web based chat room, given that I can have it open in a dedicated client rather than another browser tab/window. Personal preference, and it also fixes the language filter. Win win.

What? They have never been that bad. All characters from games we all know, only one which pissed people off was the Catherine avatar which was nothing bad either. All the rest have been Power Girl, but "ass floss" made me laugh lol

I see this more as a pointless exercise, but if you feel so inclined to add a filter to turn my swearing into *'s feel free. Crafty people usually find ways around it either way whether it be ASCI art or letter replacement with symbols/characters or for the truly desperate, images...

You can use a language filter if you want but really just put it in the forum rules what you aren't allowed to do. People who work around it with "ascii art or letter replacement" will be reprimanded by the forum staff for not complying in the rules. Its really that simple. Want to stay on the forum? Obey the rules. Don't like it? GO to some other forum where you can swear and post naked DBZ characters.

I mean that's fine, but it's really pointless in my opinion. My point is it's not like it's hard to work around. I'd rather foster a community where users are banned for useless aggressive swearing rather than having it filtered so that we're more family friendly. We're all adults...or in this case not, but we should be fully capable of acting like one.

Also whatever DBZ you like to watch in your spare time is your own business :p

Gee, you wouldn't happen to be the guy that complained to ASSEMbler, would you?

FYI, I might sound like a meanie-head down below. I've done my best to keep it PG, but no promises.

    1. Lots of kids are into GTA too. Should Rockstar censor everything they do because children plague the audience of their M rated game? This site was never aimed towards children, the user base has always been primarily adults. If kids want to join, they're more than welcome to as long as abide by the same rules as everyone else.

    2. Yup. Not that it really needs one though. This isn't a porn site. If you don't want your kids joining this site, then block the site on their computer. Parenting. Really not hard.

    3. -ASSEMber-games. Assembly language, I would assume. Why the first five letters are capitalized? Don't know. As for the second part, you are aware even GameFAQs has an off-topic section, right? Or are you suggesting "Old Foul Mouthed Fogies Retro Gaming Collectors Hideout" somehow has nothing to do with games?

    4.

    5. Yet crying when a 10+ year old forum they just joined does not conform to their standards is A-OK. No need for a nursery there.

Here's a suggestion, and I know this might sound crazy, but maybe don't intentionally browse the site near your kids if you are so worried about it tainting their innocence? That's like watching internet porn in your living room then getting mad at the website when everyone else in the living room can see it too. Except here it's a few naughty words in text.

There was a time long ago when I myself was like this on various websites. Then again, I was also around 15. You're 33.

I don't understand your complaints at all. Have you not visited other websites? Are you not aware of how tame this site really is in comparison to the rest of the internet? This site has an excellent balance of maturity and occasional immaturity, so it is neither constantly boring nor unnecessarily childish. It has an excellent balance of presenting and requesting knowledge, which is why ASSEMbler decided to fix the entire search engine in order to preserve that knowledge, and why so many people come here when they have a question about obscure gaming hardware.

You know what? What you want already exists. Download Greasemonkey for Firefox or Tampermonkey for Chrome, then download this userscript which censors most profanity on the internet, including this site.

    profound.jpg

If that userscript doesn't cover enough profanity, Google "greasemonkey censor" and other scripts pop up that should suit your needs, though I think the one I posted covers the most ground. If you look at the source code of the script it shows which words are censored and what they are replaced with.

You see? That's the great thing about this site. We help each other. We exchange knowledge, and we have fun doing it. We may have disagreements on several issues and debates may stem from those disagreements, but we all share one common interest: Video Games.

    Enjoy your stay. Or don't.

wow you have a lot of issues

and YEAH im not denying or hiding the fact that I was the one that not complained but mentioned it to Assembler

on side note there seems to be a lot of talk about how this site is anti porn and steers clear of demeaning women. right to the point there is RULES. yet foul language is not demeaning to the general public. its like someone walking past you and spitting right next to you (it came from their mouth, it hit the street and its supposed to be the land of the free) well your still going to thing its disgusting arnt you

im a member of many forums and this is the first forum that I have come across that has no rules again foul language

obviously its an admin decision but I had a valid reason to bring it up

and im certainly not gonna stop my kids from sitting next to me on the sofa when im on the net as I avoid wrong websites in and when not in their presence and would then have to avoid this place if it is something that continues to be the norm.

    Neat-o. ;)

Wow, you have a lot of issues.

Keep in mind, I just solved your little conundrum for you. All you did was whine to ASSEMbler, then make a post whining about it to us. You didn't do a damn thing to actually fix your problem, I did.

    Quoted for truth.

As for you silverfox0786, don't like how things work here? Either take the suggestion on how to fix it or leave. Installing scripts in browsers is not hard to do. I've made big issues out of small things and it resulted in several members being mad at me. Were you around for the ROLf and OBEY fiasco? This thing is headed in the direction those went. I don't think you'd want that. I'm speaking from experience here.

Because we have been adult enough not to need it, whereas other places have not. Rules are added when people can't control themselves or hurt/abuse/piss off others. This forum has traditionally had some of the most relaxed rules I have seen, again, because there is a different culture here and people treat each other better than other places (with exceptions). We get it, you don't like bad words. That's your problem, not ours. People have given you options to satisfy your concerns without damaging the experience of others (and ANY form of censorship is damaging).

ASSEMbler wanted feedback from the community and I think that he has gotten the general feeling that we don't want nor feel that we need further rules on this issue.

As have I. There were some I still feel I was in the right, but others I look back on and cringe over how much of an a-hole I was. Plenty of users on here don't like me, and it seems I've added yet another to the list.

silverfox0786, I'm not trying to make you feel unwelcome. I just don't get why someone would be so upset over such a trivial non-issue. It keeps being brought up, but this site truly is tame in comparison to most online communities. The only ones that beat it are the ones with heavy moderation and censorship. The fact that this site works as well as it does with minimum moderation (in terms of censorship) shows just how mature this community really is.

If you have a problem with language, use the script I linked in my previous post. If you have a problem with me, block/ignore me. If you have a problem with HEX1GON's questionable avatars, or anyone's for that matter, then install ad-block and block the image. You can make this site as family friendly as you want, and you can do it without affecting everyone else.

... are you sure you're actually 33? Because what you're talking about here makes you sound like a cantankerous 80-year-old. And turn down that music while yer at it, ya lousy kids! I can't believe anyone below that age could have such a backwards, antiquated view of things. Also, you're aware that "think" and "thing" are two separate words, right? I only mention it because you've made that mistake at least twice. I personally find that kind of language a lot more offensive than what we're talking about here.

I can only imagine that with that view of the world, the reality outside of whatever kind of cocoon you're currently living in must seem like a living hell.

That's one of your issues here, you really shouldn't be on the internet with your kids next to you. Get them away from the screen but within your watch.

Anyway language is harmless, it's used on TV, movies, music on the radio, billboards any form of media. I used to get a shock from it, but I developed a thick skin by using the internet since my teens it's something you need on the internet in order to not get pissed off at such small things.

IMO this is an odd practice, and I wouldn't do it because...
    ...this.

If you keep candy away from a child to the point where they never have any candy, what happens when they go to a friends house and have candy there? They indulge in way too much and you deal with the repercussions.
You can't always be there to save your kids from danger. The only way to really be sure is to educate them on the do's and don'ts of the internet and let them go from there on. Being an overbearing parent will figuratively smother a child and keep them unprepared for life; think Rodd and Todd from the Simpsons.

My mother always said, "There's no such thing as bad kids; just bad parents." I feel this applies to everyone, and more people should take it seriously.
    ---

On topic, I say no to the language ban. If a child is interested in joining the forum for whatever reason, they are, most likely, old enough to understand that swear words exist and people will use them from time to time. If they're any younger, I'd be amazed that they could even register on the site.
