Increase of children means we will need alanguage filter

Parents need to parent their kids, it is not our job to censor ourselves to make someone else happy.

 

+1 for this. Although i do use IRC on a rare occasion but its a little bit inconvenient if you just want to pop in for a quick second just to say "What's up".

The IRC's always go the same way.

Theres a lot of chatter for the first few days but generally it turns into a ghost town and nobody talks until somebody highlights another person when they want them. Users drop like flies and IRC channel becomes a ghost town

 

I really like the chatbox, please don't remove it. It's perfect for low-importance/off-topic stuff and getting to know other members more. OFC it derails sometimes, but it should be seen more like an off-topic tool, nothing "canonical" and serious like a thread really. Plus, it's not very obvious on the site anyway, I'm sure some people that posted here didn't even know there was one.

I really don't see why you should censor for others. I got an idea on who complained to you about that, you should feel free to dismiss people that feel more important than the majority.

 

i never use the chatbox and never look at it. Eh...don't mind it though.

I didn't want to get involved in this great debate, but a few things as my 2 buts worth are required.

1 This is not a nursery and is not supposed to be, there are sections on here for all platforms not just retro and many children are into retro, they are far easer to play than todays PS3/4 and XBOX360/One games and then there is the Wii. This forum supports those platforms, the other thing a lot of original exploits and hacks where done by kids, as you put it.
2 There is no age restriction to who joins this forum.
3 This forum is called AssemblerGames. Assembler... Why i'm not sure but Games... is obvious what it means. This forum was not names "Old Foul Mouthed Fogies Retro Gaming Collectors Hideout"
4 swearing and using profanities in general is not a nice thing and should be avoided
5 People who use foul language and then cry about it when they get told off are the real Kids and need to go back to nursery

I know for one my Parents brought me up well and using correct language was a very important part and yet im not that old im only 33 so im still young and at the age that Swearing would be part of ones vocabulary but i don't use it and have 5 kids to watch for. I use this forum allot and always have the page open and im certainly not going to stop my kids from sitting next to me while i browse the forum. but with language that's going on i am stating to thing was joining this place really a good idea.

This forum has earnt allot of respect all over the world for some of the preservation work it does, but with the way the language and attitude is, its going to get a really bad branding, a little like neo-geo.com who eat people alive just for fun and being a noob. no matter how good the content is on neo-geo people are reluctant to join and ask questions in fear of what response they will get. i know i am one of those people.

 

I beg your pardon for being repetitive, but this. The biggest harm you (we) can do to teenagers is teaching them proper English and get them into technology.

Ok, as 13 (becoming 14 this year) year old teen swearing is ok (My country swears alot actually). But don't want any pornographic images (and whats the point of sending these, these are videogame board, not porn board).

hm, im not sure whether i should say "oh god please no" or "hmm...", being 17 myself.
i never used the chatbox so i cant say anything about that, but the threads and forums (that i follow) here are nowhere near something that should be considered "not for children".
that said, the only thing i would need to get over with would be my lack of capitalization and apostrophes (which i use almost nowhere on the web ._.)...
but as some already said, its all up to the boss

 

I can count on one finger the number of times porn has been posted on this board and it was when a gravure producer and video game collector posted about his profession on them forum and posted a picture and the axe wound lips were slightly [literally a cm or so] were on show that he didn't realize and it was literally removed within an hour or so.

Frankly the only thing even close now is when Hex uses avatars that have cartoon ass floss in them and that's fairly PG-13.

This is a non point and I'm interested to see what made you think there was porn here.

They're just words, nobody's getting hurt. Bullying by calling people names and harassing them is one thing - that actually can be harmful. But profanity, on its own, doesn't hurt anyone.

There's profanity all over the internet, not just here. There's tons of profanity on YouTube even, do you shield your children's eyes when reading the comments? As other people have said, the language here is pretty mild compared to almost anywhere else on the internet. It sounds to me like you have an idea of this puritanical, perfectly proper and polite society that simply doesn't exist, and never will exist.

 

Wanna know what a society with censorship would be like? Just watch Demolition Man. I want no part of a shit world like that.
