You meant usb hdd, yes well it obviously should work that way, I thought you were talking about official hdd stuff... There are probably some other threads about the test ps2 and the hdd/utility discs, just search around... limey, if you buy it and it doesn't works the way you want, you can still resell it afterwards... Unless your visitors might be impressed by your hardware and wanted to give you a helping hand! There would be nothing of value (beta/proto stuff) on the Tool 1st hdd, it's purpose is not for storing stuff... Unless you have the emu board and the emu hdd hopefully not empty, wich I hope is the case for both my new units, you won't find anything more exciting than a regular redhat 5.2...
Re HDD: Good, thought I was going nuts for a second there and just making stuff up (never!!!) Re visitors: This is one of those family things where getting the PS2 Tool out would result in "Why on earth do you buy these stupid toys? Can't you put the money into some investment portfolio? Ours is doing really well, did I tell you how well we are doing, money really isn't to be toyed with...." and on and on! I love my family, but I think in some instances I am seen as the black sheep. Baaa is all I can say! ;-)
I hope so! Got a bit worried after reading about Barc0de's experience. Correct. Actually I'd just woken up, so I'd not got as far as my ebay search ritual yet. So thanks for that! I'm not too fussed about HDD compatibility on it (I've got a couple of retail units I use for FF:XI, HD-loading & Linux). As Unclejun says - I can always resell if it doesn't work out for me. Though it's more likely I will instead use it as an excuse to carry on looking for a slim that has 'Test' on the case. :icon_bigg And I know what you mean about 'visitors'! I allow myself a certain amount of toy funds each month & try not to go too nuts, but the collecting hobby can be hard to explain to the unafflicted...
Glad to see more people joining the TOOLs club! I m internet-less at the moment, since friday midnight for some reason, and I have coursework to submit on tuesday - adding insult to injury, libraries are not 24h on weekends, and I m stuck without any academic commentaries >< thank for for the shitty-slow yet expensive connection over my phone, talk about bad luck all at once ><
Barc0de I noticed your connection dropping and wondered why you were offline all weekend. Considering the pending exams, it's possibly given you a bit of time to ignore all this stuff - fate! UJ : The unit is finally out of the attic. I intend to do the necessary this week.
Parris, I dont have a Tool yet but everytime i try and get one with something the wife tends to find other jobs for me to do aswell.... ive found thebest way is to give her money and take the kids out and go shoppi ng or something!
Well unfortunately, I had already done my book-reading, all that was left was online research. I m glad the connection is up and running as we speak though, I ll try and cram a 3K word legal coursework in a day, wish me luck PS: I wish websites would be more simple. As I realized yesterday, running 'net using my phone as a GPRS modem, pages like this one, loaded fine, yet professional pages that we use to access legal material was slow as snails, with all their fancy intros, colorful buttons , their java scripts etc. Simple is better, and cheaper, not to mention faster
It's okay folks.... I think she's going to make it (dull beep of heart monitor) First HDD copied over successfully. PS2 Tool now boots to prompt.
TOOL arrival... Ok, so this morning I am woken up by the sound of the dog going nuts - a classic sign of a delivery person at the door. My TOOL finally arrived! I however, then had to immediately head off to work, so I've just only got around to unwrapping & setting up stuff. It's DTL-T10000 H A & the PCI card at the back looked slightly different to the one in UJ's pic in barc0de's Tool Assistance thread - theres no DIN connector & the LAN port is where the DIN connector would have been. The second PCI slot also appeared to be populated, but this actually appears to merely be a DB9 serial port. Although missing any of the promised cables/controller etc, it appeared in cosmetically good condition, so I set about firing it up. It booted up to the Tool page on the AV output & to a Redhat user login on the second VGA port, so all looked good so far. However, the keyboard attached via USB appeared not to be working & thats when I noticed that one of the USB ports has been mangled. I suspect that may have knocked out the other port (which the keyboard happened to connected to). Setting that issue to the side for a moment, I then proceeded to connect in via ethernet & was successfully able to access the admin interface. Hmmm, I'm wondering how difficult fixing that USB port is going be, but I'm gonna shut it down & resume play tomorrow. It's late here! (BTW, since there are now several related threads, would it be better for me to post this stuff over in Gleavepaul's new thread?)
I think you may have the same revision of the unit as a previous member of this site called PA, but regrettably he recently damaged his unit and it seems beyond repair. He was initially having similar problems with keyboard. If no light can be shed, I can email and find out. P.S. You are in Paul Gleave's thread. P.P.S. Images plz ! ;-) Looking forward to seeing the unit. This is a Bury one isn't it? Does it look like it was badly packaged or damaged prior to shipping?
Oh, yeah  Um, I meant his other thread - the Tool Basics one. UJ, I'll post some pics later this morning after I've had some kip. Yes, I need sleep, it's an ungodly hour here! Parris, I'd heartily appreciate any info you might be able to get on the USB/keyboard. Everything else seems functional, so I'm hoping the damage is merely to the USB socket(s). The beast was actually packaged pretty effectively - the unit was wrapped thoughly in several layers of bubble-wrap & around that was large chunks of polystyrene cut more-or-less to shape. The box could have taken a fair bit of punishment without the unit getting effected, but the box was in good shape too. I'm currently of the opinion that the USB socket was broken before it was packed, probably by somebody banging into something that was plugged into the USB port. The seller may well never have even noticed that kind of damage. It actually looks in pretty good nick, apart from that...
Somewhat frustrating is that of all the images I took of the PS2 Tool in pieces, the USB section is the one area I failed to photograph in any great detail as it was.... a USB socket! I just never thought anything of it. The sockets themselves are attached to a PCB and that in turn is linked to the motherboard by a cable. That section can be lifted out completely and replaced, so if the worst comes to the worst it should be either straight forward to take out and repair or actually replace. My mind immediately wanders to the possibility of UJ parting out his damaged unit. If PA's unit is also as dead as he suggests and it turns out to be the same revision you have then I can ask him whether he is willing to sell that particular part. It may be the same in all the revisions of Tool (to keep things simple). Are you performing open Tool surgery? That part only requires that you remove the blue base (if you have one), the side panels (plastic / metal) and the HDD caddy. The only draw back being I think you ALSO need to remove the other plastic panel (both sides) as the screws that attach the USB section to the frame are under a blue plastic stick on face plate. I did peel it off, but for some stupid reason never took a photograph (sorry!) See image to see it: This is the PCB with the cable running to the motherboard. It is the section in the top LEFT hand corner, a bit hard to see (again sorry!)
