I'm probably wrong but is the TOOL USB/Firewire socket assembly (less faceplate) the same as an Early Regular PS2?
TOOL progress/pics Sony is fond of putting blocking plates on these things aren't they? After removing the 2 plates, I noticed that there was a small piece of vinyl around the 2nd VGA socket, which appeared to be removable - pulled this off to reveal a pair of DIN sockets for keyboard/mouse. Plugged in these in & they work OK, so the mashed USB socket is less of a problem for now. (BTW, Festerfly - the USB ports are aligned differently with respect to the iLink port than on the PS2, so I'm not sure how swappable they'd be - I'd have to open the TOOL up & see what's behind that blue faceplate...) So, now I can access the TOOL on the network connection & also enter commands directly to the Redhat UI. Well, almost for the Redhat - the password for the network admin login doesn't work on the Redhat side - if anyone can help me in here, I'd be very grateful! (This is where my STEEP learning curve starts, I guess). Anyway, here are the images I promised last time: http://limeybrit.net/images/tool/tool1.jpg http://limeybrit.net/images/tool/tool2.jpg http://limeybrit.net/images/tool/tool3.jpg And although this is blurry, you can see the damage to the top USB port here: [edit: changed most of the images to links to speed up page refreshes]
Nice unit! Could you take a closer picture of the connector of the pci board? Thanks. For changing the password: http://assemblergames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=190220&postcount=67 And while your at it, what is the model of the pci board(it should appear during the POST, before the memory test)?
UJ, that was the pointer that I needed - I'm in now! With the recent increases in folks with access to TOOLs, these kind of questions are likely to repeatedly come up - is it time for a TOOL noob wiki, perhaps? Interestingly, my box appears to have a later Redhat distro (6.2) than I've seen reported elsewhere & the CPU shows up as i686 Intel Celeron running at 566Mhz. I've not yet been able to figure out the PCI board version - my LCD display tends to blank out during screen resolution changes, so I'm probably missing it when it appears - is there any way to find this out from linux? Here's the pic of the PCI connectors at the back - from the look of the notches cut into the black metal, the box is designed to accept at least 2 different cards... http://limeybrit.net/images/tool/tool5.jpg
Agreed! Alas, the TOOL section looks a little unpopulated right now. I'd start adding stuff myself, if I had any confidence I really knew what I was talking about! ;-) Although I've been tinkering with computers & the like since I was knee-high-to-a-grasshopper, stumbling unto the world of game dev stuff has been quite an awakening for me & is bringing back deep feelings of noobyness, as I endevour to explore my new toy, without seriously messing it up in the process!
Hey as far as the Ps2 Tool was concerned, it arrived and I immediately had to declare myself "King of the Noobs" so don't feel awkward in asking noob questions, I have walked that line before you and in my opinion had I not just bitten the bullet, I'd not have managed to meet half the people I have on this board. Declare your noobyness with pride my fellow noob  You'll be following in a long tradition of my dumbass questions lol Repeat after me "there is nothing wrong with being a noob" <Half these other guys are too, they just don't admit it!>
Funnily enough as a Noob myself i am soo tempted to rush out and purchase a TOOL just so i can join the TOOL Noob Gang! ray:
Steady now, that is borderline geekness! By all means buy a Tool, join in the thread and feel at one with noobness, but calling it "The Tool Gang" is just a no-no, because you just know at Christmas time someone will send you a t-shirt in the post with that printed on it. I couldn't face that :noooo: LOL
Out of interest....did u take any piccys of the damage that you are able to post here? ...Do you know if he plans to sell it as soon as it gets back to him? ...If so piccy's would be handy for the community to use in a buyer beware scenario.
yes, I have pictures of the main damages. I have also secretly marked it in a non-obvious spot , for recognition purposes. He claimed to 'able to fix it' although I told him that there are issues with the frame and the drive wont budge. pictures will be posted as soon as i get refunded.
