There is no doubt that the photos of the unit from Murder is legit and very likely a unit I put together for something. I don't remember putting the silver jewel on the orange units, but that is also a legit jewel, and I easily could have done that and don't remember.
The photo I added is from the GE Color Xpress factory in Selkirk NY. We took the tool in the machine out of production in GDL Mexico, drove it up to NY for some trials. You can see the orange and blue units just fresh out of the machine, these were all of the trial tops we made before shooting a full set at the production factories. The guy on the left is the operator, the next guy is the GE Plastics sales guy I dealt with, ME, and our industrial designer for the original console.
I tons of other random photos, but I don't want to bore you all completely.

Awesome pictures everyone. Thank you so much. I had a feeling that there were more orange lids out there. So that means there are more out there to discover.

If not to post them here, obviously my email will continue to be open.

And lets not overwhelm Marco too much hah, so easy on the PMs until I post the info we are already discussing :)

Obviously I've already made it known that I would like it on FB, but take your time no matter what you do with it. Good pictures are number 1 at this point.

You would think if these were in NY that I would start running into them eventually. Selkirk is in my area.

Honestly when I pasted Marco's info I figured you already hopped in your car to go visit the plant if its still there.

Were all those orange lids used for the Halo Orange XBOX version that was just discovered or were those just the lids that employees replaced with there regular XBOX?

The lids are engineerings samples. As mentioned above, he doesnt remember the halo branded one in particular.

Looks like Mountain Dew was made into a case.

But I like it. Too bad they never produced these officially and for the mass market.

That is an awesome find. I always find it amazing that stuff like this still ends up turning up so many years later.

Imagine the person who has had this stashed away for the last 10 years knowing that you have such a bad ass console! I just hope it is the same color as the orange controller is. That would be a true set. I know a friend that has 2 of the orange live controllers. He would blow a head gasket when he sees this. He was a fan of the orange top only. But this is just so many levels higher then the lid only console. To bad it was not a XDK. The HALO edition XDK. That would truly be 1 of a kind.

But I guess it would have to run on 5933 and have the 5933 recovery disc with it to truly be a HALO XDK.

The foreground units were washed out from the flash on the camera, as you see the units further back on the table look a little closer to the right color.
The way this happened was that we sent a production tool from our plant in Mexico up to GE in Selkirk. They shot a bunch of colors for us, but only a few were interesting. Probably only a couple from each of these batches were brought back to MS. Like I was saying earlier to Borman, we brought back red, these orange, blue, and that was probably about it. All the rest of these were destroyed, so I am pretty sure they are not going to turn up or they would have already.
When we decided to actually make more for special editions, we had the custom color PC/Lexan from GE sent to our production factories and they shot full sets: Skeleton/Smoke, Green, Blue, Crystal, White, Mountain Dew/Pepsi/Hulk, and Orange. These color varieties, (except Orange) ended up in a variety of production special editions as you all know, in a variety of regions (Japan, NA, EU...) and often recycled with different pad printing.

Orange was the branding color for Xbox Live, so we were looking into a special console to go along with Live, but we never pulled the trigger. Like I was mentioning earlier, I think I only ended making 2 of the orange full consoles for marketing folks, and I gave a 3rd to a friend (he confirmed to me that his had the Halo Special Edition printed on the front), which would have been the only known unit sent out into the public until later when the other 2 show up. There weren't many sets of orange plastics, so I don't think there could be more floating around. I either send the remainders to MS Archives (I don't think I would have done this since it was never a unit we produced) or shredded them in our recycling bin.

At some point just before launch, BillG came down for a tour of all the Xbox groups. This was most of the manufacturing team prior to launch (engineering not included), anyone not pictured was either in the factory getting ready, or out visiting suppliers.

this was the morning of the Japan launch, which I was invited to attend by MSKK since I made the special edition for them. They could not do a midnight release like we do in the states, so they had the release at 6 or 7 in morning. They handed out green knit jogging gloves to the people in line waiting since it was so cold that morning. I still use mine for running.
