It's too much like it's on rails - girlfriend's impression.

What does that even mean in relation to a platformer? On rails is typically a term you would apply to a shooter.

It's very simple. By "On rails", she means that she is not in control, just like how a train is on rails. I've not heard of it used with respect to shooters, but I think this concept is rather simple and easy to follow. Anything "on rails" basically means "you don't control it".

She said that it steered her towards each spring, it just flowed and she felt more like a passenger than a player. In comparison, the Sonic 3 game we just started requires a lot more negotiation and actually feels like a platformer.

All Sonic games are "on rails" so to speak if you think Sonic 4 is. If Sonic 4 really was on rails then that would mean you couldn't jump anywhere you'd like to, you wouldn't be able to select your own path, you wouldn't be able to stop and star at will. That's what "on rails" means. Take Panzer Dragoon on the Saturn. The first and 2nd game apart from path selections were both on rail shooters. You couldn't fly where you wanted to. basically you went along the pre-planned path and that was it.

Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I'm a huge, huge Sonic fan (along with owning the originals in many forms, I even own BOTH Sonic Riders and finished Unleashed) and I really did not like the demo for Sonic 4. My two biggest complaints are the art (why is the world plastic?) and the physics. A big difference from the other 2D Sonic games to this one is moving in mid-air. On the Mega Drive if you run and jump, you will continue forward from Sonic's momentum. In this new one, if you let go of the D-Pad, Sonic stops moving laterally instantly. THIS IS A MAJOR CHANGE and really breaks the flow of the game for me. Aside from that, level design seemed competent enough though, and the music was just so-so.

I really liked the game, there are some flaws, but I believe they'll take User Feedback seriously this time and use it for Episode 2.

    This.

May not be the best 2D Sonic ever, but once you get used to it's physics quirks, it works. Which is not that hard to do if you got used to the change in physics from the original series to Rush, as it's very similar. Even the homming attack is a variation of the attack in Rush.

Hopefuly in the next episode there will be better music. The more I hear it, the more I like it, but still feels like some of it it's either bland or high pitched (or it may be high pitched only on the Wii?)

The first review of Sonic Colors is out. Ngamer gave it 86, by the way. So maybe Sonic 4 broke the cycle, and Colors will help it stay that way for a while.

Yeah def not the best 2d sonic ever playing it I have this whole been there done that feeling Plus 4 Zones that you can play in any order but still.

I know they are going for that whole Sonic and Knuckles thing with release the first half then the 2nd half but I'd have rather they released the whole game then did Sonic 5

Mega Man 9 and 10 felt like coming home after a long vacation. Sonic 4 felt like I never left.

I am totally getting Colors on DS. Rush Adventure was MEH so hopefully Colors can pick up on the awesomeness that was Sonic Rush

I know what "on rails" means. It's la-li-lu-le-lo that didn't know what I meant; it's almost as "on rails" as Panzer Dragoon.

Dude c'mon dont go as far as talking bullshit about the old games to defend this cashcow remake.

In the old ones all movements were right under the player's control, and the results depended on speed and momentum. From the first adventure onwards, any acrobatics beyond walking was scripted, since the devs couldnt figure how to leave it to the player without screwing up the camera or getting sonic flying into his death.

Think before you type. In the old sonics you could jump out of a dash just like the new one. In the old sonic you could go where you wanted to just like the new one. The main difference between the old and new are the physics not the "on rails" aspect. I was just making the point that If Sonic 4 was on rails the so would every other platformer since they all follow the basic idea. Anyway, the term on rails was wrongly used in the first place. On rails means you have NO choice of direction. You go where the computer puts you. No Sonic game does that even the new one.

Anyway, why the hell are many if you getting so worked up about the game. Did you honestly expect it to be perfect?

I'm not going to bother posting in this thread anymore.

People will always find something to complain about. No matter what. It's really sad.

I mean I'm in the same boat where I don't know what people were expecting out of this game?
You can't expect every game to be "perfect" in your own perception of what you think as "perfect" Or to be be like "X" game here and etc.

First, maybe you should make a better point before pulling an unfunny switcheroo and saying you meant otherwise

And no, I never expected this game to be anywhere near the originals, and it pisses me off that they put this in the same league, when its just another minigame they outsourced to a company that outsourced it to another, coded it in 3 months and then it was on sale, simply because theres always going to be someone buying this shit.

Just look at heroes, StH, secret rings and unleashed

    Not perfect, but much better.

Indeed. At least Sonic behaved roughly how one would expect - actual momentum rather than weird physics!
