I kinda like the way it looks. Reminds me a little bit of Yoshi's Story. Except for maybe Sonic himself.

The design just looks wrong. I was a hardcore 2D Sonic fan. I could probably play them with my eyes closed. I can appreciate they are trying to be authentic, but it has just ended up looking wrong in my opinion.

It is not how i imagined it to be. This is how I imagined sonic to be
http://fc07.deviantart.com/fs31/i/2008/210/e/5/Green_Hill_Zone_by_Orioto.jpg (as posted earlier in the thread).

It just looks. Wrong. The leak also showed the xbox menu showing it as being 400 points. For that price, depending on the reviews, I may give it a shot.

At least they are going in the right direction.

its a step up from sonic's recent ventures but, it has one fatal flaw imo, you know when you press down he goes into a ball and speeds up (after going downhill/other stuff) in this game he slows down. other than that its incredibly frustrating,

not the usual sonic challenge, like a fuck you we made 4 levels but made them super hard so you think your playing a full game because its talking you a long time.

and most ideas/ level are reused from sonic one. (my fav is sonic 3)

Its not a great game, but in comparison to a wherehog....... its a step in the right direction, i can only hope they make episode 2 a little better.

    Overall conclusion
"not what i had hoped for; but better than i expected"

The ones who got those images confirmed the boss isn't exactly the same it behaves a little different after a few hits and there is a chase after beating it.

Maybe it's not on partnernet anymore, microsoft might have taken it down after all this "possible leak issue"...

I want Sonic to have photorealistic graphics and be played by a real hedgehog actor, motion capture and all. Do it SEGA.

PS: Before you go on discounting the idea of a hedgehog actor, look no further than the US ads for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on the GameCube.

As some of you ( and very little in the sonic fandom ) i am reserving my judgement until I see some more of the gameplay, we only got a fucking 3 second teaser and a crappy quality leaked video...
I still like what I'm seeing here, it's not perfect but it's a step in the right direction...

Aag. It's all just opinion. I'm not judging until I have played it. I can commend them for going in the right direction. As a Sonic fan, it is just weird to see the series going in an artistic direction that I don't personally find attractive.

Sure, as long as the game plays good, I'm not going to get a boner over it. But I think Sonic had a really special place in people's hearts, more so than many games. This franchise represents peoples childhoods, and it has been fucked backwards way too many times. That's why people are touchy.

Personally, for me, Sonic just oozed cool and attitude 'back in the day'. The style in these old games was, and still is, amazing. The new one, IMO, from these screenshots, looks a bit disjointed, with its 'New' Sonic, in zones designed in the 'style OF' old games, but somehow missing the mark in being faithful- the pre-rendered and smooth look seems queer. Example, look at the layering of the background.. it looks more artificial than natural.

It gives me the feeling that the people who made these original games look great, and the people who had the PASSION to make these games great, are long gone, and its been passed to new people. New people who have a very different vision of what constitutes as 'Sonic'.

I can't really describe what I mean very well. Sonic was my childhood, and the style is really specific in my head. The fan-remade Sonic 4 title screen really shows this well. You're probabluy bored of hearing what I think now lol- but - the Sonic 4 team may mean well; using drawings and concept art from the original games, but that doesn't really mean anything - a drawin is so much different to an asset in a game.

I don't think the artistic direction is 'faithful' to the retro Sonics. But that isn't to say that it cannot be a good game.

    Meh

Thank you, This is the reason I posted that article.

People are never fucking happy at all. They need to just stop being so negative about every little thing and just enjoy what you get. (If sonic had never changed you'd all be crying Megaman Style about everything) (Sonic was never perfect to begin with anyway, nothing ever is, There is always something to NitPick no matter what)

I used to partake a bit in this and once I told myself to just shut the fuck up and just enjoy life , My personal health has gone way up and i'm much happier.

And I Enjoy games a lot more.

Who wants to play the same game over and over forever?

90% of the time I find that the only dumb fucks asking for sonic to go "back to its roots" were people who barely played the original games and never really cared for the series, not during the heyday nor today.

Back then they used to diss the game, and now the best way to continue so is to just say "it isnt as good as it used to be". They never cared, nor will even if there's a REAL comeback.

AFAIC whoever is left at the Sonic team should keep trying new ways to bring the spirit of the original to 3D in the way it was meant to be.

Picture this: instead of a platform floating in the middle of no-where (the adventure games) or a pathway-in-rails (all the other 3D crap) you get to run through a great canyon-like level, like in the SonicCD intro.

That was impossible until recently, but now it can be done.

But you know whats sad? than the only real attempt to adapt the gameplay to 3D was Sonic Xtreme, 14 years ago. After that what we got was an extrapolation of the original gameplay into 3D, hence the fixed runways.

What if miyamoto did the same? what if after Mario64 he just said "Galaxy? lets just change the background so it looks like space and bump up the graphics"

Would you be happy with that?

Tell that to RPGs and Tetris.

    Chill people.

I just like to see people's opinions. I'm sure there are many people, Sonic 'fan's included, who are excited about this, but are not voicing that on the internet.

Shadowlayer, I don't think anyone wants to play 'the same game' over and over again. Sonic 1-3 were all quite different in style, and as far as I am concerned, are very different games.

Appealing to lost childhood memories and wonders of past gone wont cut it anymore, they've been doing that for the last 10 years by combining the sonic games with the craptastic sonic comic/cartoon universe.

And Sonic 3 was 16 years ago man, its long due to a renewal...

I really don't think they have been appealing to any childhood memories by combining the new games with the cartoon franchises etc.. Trying to appeal to some kind of strange furry-obsessed more 'mainstream' audience, maybe.

I guess, the thing is, you have more than one category of 'fan'. You have those who grew up with the 2D games and have been increasingly ostracized due to the changing nature of the series. And then you have those who played the 3D games in their youth (thats a scary thought) and enjoy the furry fluffy animal friends and fanfiction etc (just search Deviantart for Sonic, lol)

Both these groups have very different expectations on how a 'Sonic' game should 'feel. This could draw into a very deep debate on what games mean to people, and how they fulfill players needs.
