Those horrid surface-mount capacitors are notorious! I still think they should've given the entire board the once-over with an ESR meter, as there's bound to be a few more that are leaky/ out of tolerance.

I was rooting for Ben Heck's goofy face the whole time, and when that CD span and the sound came on I pumped my fist. And everyone is eager for roms and emulation. Dan can literally test any Super Disc CD printed!

I WANT ONE. This is amazing

If he actually has a disc that could be used on the prototype, that is. If so, then this would be a big fat boon!

I didn't originally talk about the legal side of this. I just said the story had changed, to which people replied it didn't change and has stayed the same all the way from the start. The funny thing is, the original story is in the first page of this thread so if the people saying there is no change to the story had read before posting, they would have seen the change for themselves.

Exactly the reason why i think the story was changed. If something is not legal, time that's gone by from when it was taken doesn't make it become legal, so it makes no sense that people think its ok cause it was over 20 years ago.

Or the son was simply wrong about it. I cant remember what happened 20 years ago either. Always a conspiracy theory around this place lately :p

Yes throw out because it was the SNES PlayStation. Why else was it in the box. Many pieces of hardware and stuff have been thrown out by companies in the 90's that no one knew of and this would have been one of them. The story change is proof enough (to me anyway) that this came into their possession by shifty moves that could have this unit repo'd.

Well i am done trying to talk reason with people that didn't even know the story had changed, and the original story was in this very thread of all places.

They heard you. But the only evidence is that the story changed. The why is completely fabricated. Possible? Sure. But so are the other possibilities. Plenty of things have been saved from the trash around here regardless.

I had a good chuckle at how it was those darn caps again! I also felt like Ben went the extra mile to treat the system with care and respect. The anti-static wrist band quip also had be laughing. I think it's great that it's working, and I'm happy to be able to view it first hand when they bring it to a convention in New Jersey this September (A Videogame Con). Really hope they can dig up the CD that may have been inside or with it.

PS: Who cares about the details from a decade and a half ago? It got saved from the trash, end of story. At least these guys are out there showing it off. So many prototypes never make it out of the collectors' basements.

Yes true. As a lover of vintage and rare hardware, It is great that they are out displaying this thing instead of it sitting in a basement. I wasn't trying to burn anyone with my rant, i just hate when people don't provide the proper facts to an argument.

Now about the video. So if the cd unit does not play an audio cd because it does not recognize the cd , then there would be no chance of it playing a game cd if they found one. All the tests come out ok so could it be a laser issue with the CD unit????

Homebrew that utilizes the bios may be the one thing you can do

Yeah. The problem was exactly what a lot of people here said to check first. You know, before turning the system on...

I'm sure it's possible that a cd player not recognize a music cd but still recognize games. I don't know if any such cd consoles do that, but there's nintendo consoles that don't play video formats such as dvd's or blu-rays but still print their games on that format.

Probably the software piece to support audio cd wasn't part of the firmware at that time. I know it's v0.95 so you could expect it to read them but perhaps it was not intended to do so, who knows x)

Possible, yes - but because of the way those old CD-ROM drives worked it's very unlikely. They basically consisted of an audio CD player with an additional chip that took the transport stream from the CD DSP and did the data decoding on it. Because of this, the whole RF frontend / servo amp / CD DSP / Syscon MCU section has to be working for you to read a CD-ROM and once that's all working about the only thing that remains to make the audio side work OK is to hook up the DAC.

So my guess is that there is some sort of hardware fault in the CD player section - it could be as simple as the optical pickup. That CXA1272/CXD2500 combo is an extremely common one in Sony CD players from around that time period, so it should be possible to use the manual for something like the Sony D-101 for reference. The best news in that video is that the syscon MCU (that NEC chip on the top board) appears to be working - because that's an OTP part that almost certainly has code that was specifically developed for this model in it, and won't be replaceable with anything else.

It would be nice to see it working, for sure.

Best bet is to burn the homebrew Magic Floor game onto a disk, stick that bootcart in the cart slot, and see how badly it all fails.

Good work so far but such a tease, so much more fault finding/testing could be done with the CD-ROM.

So cool that they got the video output working again, got the CD communication working again, and fixed the capacitors that were causing the faulty CD drive behavior. So awesome! :)
