My Elite died last Saturday (RROD), the usual gradual failure starting with the unit freezing up on the boot up screen, then E79, then RROD.
What's it worth in this condition? It's untampered with (no broken seals etc), just over a year old, boxed (some bits 'n' bobs are unused), with 120GB hard drive attached (barely anything on it).

If anyone wants it I'll stick it up in the 'User Marketplace' section with some pics

Send it back to MS for a free RRoD fix.

It would be silly to sell it as a RRoD unit (which usually moves for around $50 US/35 Euro) when you can get it back to working order for free.

If you do sell, move the hard drive separately.

What he said. The RROD issue is covered under a 3 year warranty through MS though as long as the unit has never been opened before.

I didn't realise it was still under warranty! The papers that come with it just mention the standard one year. I don't recall filling out any additional paperwork or signing up for a three year one, but if it's part of the deal then it's good news.

The other bit of good news (probably short-lived, but anyway), is that I got it working again! I don't know how long it'll last but what I did was unplug it from the TV, remove the hard-drive, turn it horizontal upside-down, switch it on and leave a blanket over it for around 10 mins. The thing gets very warm, even doing jack in RROD form. When I turned it off then on again it worked!

I've been running it on composite video, but now I'm worried that if I plug in the HDMI, the extra processing power needed will make it red-ring again! Is this theory true, or does it output HD graphics and analogue video simultaneously?

Who told you that HDMI requires "extra processing power?" :)

You should ask him or her if they have any bridges for sale. heh.

The "towel trick" works temp-like, but the system will fail again. Let it fail and send it in to MS for the RRoD warranty service. And don't tell them you tried to cook it when you call. The three year RRoD warranty is standard. It applies above and beyond the default one year warranty. As long as your tamper seals are intact you're good to go.

And just to be specific, the 3 year warranty is ONLY for the RROD issue. The DVD drive and controllers and HDD are only covered by the 1 year. This I was told by a gamestop employee when my lil brother purchased his xbox360.

His common sense? Outputting in 1080p does put more strain on the console over the regular component 720p used previously.

No, really it doesn't. I'm also not sure why you think it's "common sense" that using one output over another is going to "put more strain" on the console or use "extra processing power."

If you're going to make a claim like that you're going to need to explain exactly *why* you're making such a claim and back it up. You can't just simply state it as fact and expect it to be accepted.

Indeed, here's the spiel off the XBox support page (where you fill out the form to have it sent off):

    **READ ME**
Although your device may be out of warranty, it may still qualify for a no-cost repair if you are experiencing Three Flashing Red Lights or the E74 error message and are within three years of the original purchase date of the console.

    **NOTE**
If you choose ‘Yes’ above, we will confirm that a general hardware failure associated with Three Flashing Lights or the E74 error message has occurred on your console upon receipt. If this cannot be confirmed, we may return the console to you unrepaired.

It's the last paragraph that's bugging me a little, as yesterday it red-ringed, and today it's working fine. If I send it off and it works for them the whole time it's there, then I'm worried they'll send it back saying there's nothing wrong with it! :banghead:

Put in a note describing the issue and that you did experience an RROD.

And make SURE you state that it is an intermittent problem!

I'm sure they've seen enough xboxes turn on when they were supposed to be RRoD.

I even sent a perfectly working xbox in saying it has redrings, and I got a replacement.

But I guess if you want to write a note, go for it.

I know, I have a habit of worrying over small things. It's just a note, I guess they probably get enough of those as well!
It's definitely intermittent, last night I played PGR3 for almost an hour before it red-ringed, and now it's working OK again this morning

I know i've wrote about this before but you could always force the rrod on your console, just play it for an hour or so then put it in a cold place.....simple's :110:

Well, I got my repaired 360 back today :icon_bigg

I sent it off last Tuesday, and got it back today so the whole repair took exactly a week. It's the same console I sent, give or take a few blemishes here 'n' there (oh well at least it works that's the main thing), and it smells of freshly peeled Tangerines for some reason. They threw in a free 1 month Live membership card as well.

Apparently, along with the motherboard, the DVD drive was also faulty (which is news to me!), and I can only hazard a guess as to what the 'other' thing was.

Wow! I can't believe sticking your 360 board in the oven would fix it. It makes sense now after reading this. I fix broken laptops and I may just have to try cooking a dead board in the oven to see if it brings it back to life lol!
