I support breaking of any and all encryptions and protections, as I keep my game sealed, and I have a right to make a backup. Also, rights servers go offline and hardware becomes outdated. Re-purposing hardware is very important.
The thing is, the DMCA has only been pushed in courts to the slightest amount, I don't know if any company would be prepared to outright fight with it full bore.
lol every feature i bought this stupid 60gig for is worthless. the emulation lags (no it isn't my crt), they're removing a feature that i paid for, and i'd say 90% of ps3 owners don't know these asshats have already removed a feature
Well Sony found a way to block the Proxy/DNS hack users from accessing the PSN so now nobody on 3.15 or lower can get online. On the plus side though... http://disqus.com/George_Hotz/comments.rss
Whaaaa, that sucks! It worked so nicely this morning when I last tried. I hope it get's figured out how they do it and another way to work around it is found as I'll not update, neither to 3.21sce nor to 3.21oo....
firmware upgrade to enable 8th SPE so I havent seen anyone else mention this yet, but since there's a bunch of hardware people here, maybe someone else can comment.. I read in various places that the firmware upgrade and otherOS removal is actually a side-effect of enabling the unused 8th core (SPE) on the cell processor (the PS3 ships with 7 of the 8 cores enabled, allowing at least one core to be bad and still pass Quality Control for the whole chip) .. earlier on when the CELL was still new and they didnt have the mfg details down, this was probably a lot more necessary, but perhaps with the newer PS3s they are able to ship them with 8 good SPEs.. so anyway, the speculation I saw, was the the 8th SPE is required to support the MOVE controller without degrading other aspects of gameplay.. so if you have an older PS3 with a bad 8th SPE, poof, you're bricked. anyway, I haven't seen anything else in the way of confirmation of this story, but it sounds plausible to me.. can anyone here support / confirm one way or the other?
Maybe that's why there's a significant ammount of old PS3's that simply die after upgrading to 3.21? Anyway, wouldn't this be a bad "move"? I mean, imagine lots of dead consoles for no apparent reason, just for the new controller work...
AFAIK there is no way to "reactivate" the dead SPU, it's killed by burning some e-fuses. But I might be wrong there.... But there's an easy way to find out: Install 3.21 on a debug, write a 2-line program to get and output the # of available SPUs.
This is BS speculation and nothing more. Only 7 SPU will ever be used, and 1.5 are reserved by the OS. As Hellcat says, they burn out the 8th SPU during fab. It cannot be recovered.
Well, the hypervisor is part of that 1.5, but it doesn't use any extra resources AFAIK. It used to be that 1 was always required and the other 0.5 was shared but the OS had priority, meaning the program running at the time had to surrender it whenever it was required. Therefore it is not used in games, but it is used in certain apps such as Folding (I think). Sony also reserves some of the XDR for OS use, but that has been reduced a large amount since launch. It now reserves about ~50MB where it used to be ~64MB. It used to be ~32MB of RSX too, but I have no idea what that is now. That is for core OS components - video chat, Motion sensing etc are optional but add an overhead. I think the motion sensing is about 4MB but do not have a source other than what is available online. Maybe we could get NoComply to confirm some of it for us?
Well unexpectedly Firmware 3.30 went up as a mandatory update for those that have 3.21. Supposedly it just adds trophy organizing, 3D support, updates the web browsers flash player, and fixes a bug with region free bd movies. Considering how much time it's going to take for this to come out. I'm half tempted to just go out and get another PS3 so I can play online and stuff till custom firmware comes out..
Is 3.30 safer than 3.21? I heard 3.21 killed a lot of PS3's. Plus there are rumours that a big update is coming in June, right before E3.
I haven't heard much about 3.30's stability. I'm staying on 3.15 still since I'm hoping something will happen with custom firmware, but with the new checks 3.30 has to make sure it's an official version it's seeming less and less likely to happen soon.
Anybody notice the new agreement before installing 3.30? 11.
