Im gonna lol at Sony if they havent fixed backwards compatibility and for gods sake, that thing looks ugly
Don't care if it's ugly (to be honest the original "fat" model was already ugly). It's smaller and it finally has a decent price. It seems sony stopped being "cheap" and it comes with a HDMI cable instead of a composite cables. Lots of info and pics: http://kotaku.com/5340085/ps3-slims-pics-and-specs/gallery/ http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/sony-announces-new-slimmer-ps3-coming-first-week-of-sept/
Only used OtherOS once or twice, it was shit, so won't be sad to see it go. I am pissed off about the no BC though, they really missed a trick there.
They could have made the thing pay off your mortgage and people would still be unhappy with it. Seriously though, think what you want of it, but now people will buy it (price point). The more who own it, the more games made for it, which helps me. I see this as a version for people who wanted it, but were barred by the steep price. This should help Sony quite a bit, and allow a whole new group of people into the Playstation 3's demographic. This could help the Playstation name become more appealing to a wider audience again. So in that case, it's very very exciting news. I always like the original versions better when it comes to Sony's gear, but the Slims always have their rightful place on the market. I could never get rid of my white PS3 though, especially since I just upgraded the hdd. It's a beauty, and I dig systems that stand vertically . Still, this is good for people like my buddy at work here who found the 299 price point finally doable. After buying a lawn mower and moving into his new place, 399 was too steep to step in for him.
edit: Looks like it only comes with a composite cable, after all. Also, Microsoft just ditched the HDMI cables in the new Elite 360 shipping now. It only comes with composite (not component)! The new Elite has a new box design that's easy to spot. Back on topic: Product code: CECH-2000A (Charcoal Black) I wanna see more colors.
Man, it looks so damned cheap... the plastic texture, omission of touch sensitive buttons, materials look cheap... Kinda looks like a mid 90's VCR / Dixon own-brand CD player hybrid. Eugh. Obvious, aesthetically at least, how it's cheaper to produce. Will stick with the trusty 80GB gathering dust under the TV
I want to see it in white. And does the PS logo above the disc drive light up? I like the redesign, but with the lack of silver trim I personally think it would look better in white. And why no rear USB socket? Some people like to tidy cables away so they can't be seen; why the hell do Sony think I want to plug the Eye into the front of the console? I'm very confused by the whole PS2 situation. Maybe we never will see emulation of discs and have to buy individual games from the PSN.
Actual PS3 Slim unboxing here: http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/18/playstation-3-slim-unboxing-and-hands-on/ ASSEMbler was 100% right - the Hard Drive is swappable by removing a screw.
It'll be interesting to see the internals of this, does anyone know if AnandTech still to teardowns on new hardware as soon as they get their hands on it? And I'm at a loss as to why they'd stick with an internal PSU, anyone care to shed some light on why they'd do this?
How can people miss the obvious reasons? Its so they can make a smaller version with an external PSU in a years time and then be able to justify a smaller drop in price by saying its new and improved.
Is piracy going to put his hands on this? If that's not the case Sony will loose this generation. no doubt. 250GB model? ok. You can put metal gear 4 more times hehe.
