I disagree. If Microsoft even redesigns, I will be surprised. Their next console can't be far off now. I am guessing a year and that it will be shown at E3 2010.
That's true - Microsoft hasn't really re-designed their stuff before. Sony does every generation. I still didn't see it coming this soon.
it must be part of the cost-effectiveness policy they need to follow with the PS3. If they can produce the hardware at a cheaper price and higher volumes, then they can "Playstation" the shelves as they did in the past - meaning that they ll fill shelves with their product making it available everywhere at large quantities.
Its funny how many people say sony "beat MS to the punch" with a cheap redesign. Who said MS wants to do that - ever? It'll just be a waste of money, and the price is incredibly low already. Perhaps will just go lower. There's no need for a new ugly case where everything will just be even cheaper and more downgradet as before. And as mentioned already, the next xbox isnt too far anymore anyway. So who beats who really to the punch? Technically sony couldnt even afford to go for a ps4 by 2010. That would be way too early for them. Not taking a stupid fanboy side for any of those 2 consoles. But looking over at from a neutral standpoint, MS is giving sony a beating when it comes to the finances, as well as the up comming future console. Perhaps sony just made too much of a loss with the ps3. (Again, im not saying ps3 is bad.) Nintendo shouldnt be taken into account since they didnt even really upgrade their hardware. Nintendo is printing their money with hard and software from the past
It's been widely assumed they would do a major re-design of the 360, at least internally, to address the failure issues. It's also been assumed that the re-design was already finished, at least on paper. And then boom, there's Sony's, in the flesh, with little to no rumors beforehand. That's all I was saying...
I am aware of the internal hardware changes and these have been great. But since when does that necessarily include a redesign of the case. That just raises the costs. If the mainboard gets a change, you can have it designed to fit into the old case. And by all means the 360 case isnt bad. Ps3 slim is no big deal. Sony has been doing that since ps1. xbox1 never saw an official redesign of the case.
nor did the GameCube, Dreamcast or nor will the Wii, I guess, but I fail to see a pattern. It's entirely pointless to argue and speculate based on if a console gets a shrunken version or not. Companies are at liberty to redesign their products as they see fit for a multitude of reasons. The original PS3 is perceived as bulky and ugly by many, and isn't exactly the sparkling image of success. Hence, in my view and pursuant to the fact that they even went as far as to remove the "spiderman 3" font in favour of fan-boy-like/mockup PS3 (a la PS2 letters) logo, it is not only a cost cutting measure, but a chance to re-launch the PS3's image in the public's eyes.
I don't care about the spiderman font. Why? Because I'm too busy looking at my fucking TV to even notice it. ---- Thank you.
"Great" as in "many," or "great" as in "good?" RROD still happens. You are correct. It makes me wonder, though, how much money sony has wrapped up in the case cost (and when I say case, I'm not just talking about the shell. Case cost includes how everything is mounted internally, all the brackets and such, assembly time, etc.) of the PS3. Granted re-tooling (redesigning and manufacturing tools, molds, stamps, etc. required to create parts) is a chunk of money up front, but if it ultimately saves on parts cost and time to assemble/service units, that redesign could have paid for itself and be saving the company money after 10,000 units. -ud
Whatever Sony is doing, it better be good. Up until now they've been mostly stripping away features everyone seems to like [BC being a prime example here]. But hey, why have BC when you can make people buy the games in the PS Store? As far as the new shell look goes, I don't really care, and I can't say I like either of the designs better. No matter what happens, someone will feel screwed in the end. If this turns out to be an actual improvement, all those who bought older models and possibly paid more for them, will surely feel great. Just like I did when I bought the first DS and then Lite came out. I bought Lite and then DSi came out. Same with PSP. I wonder if this model will be high gloss or not. PS3 sure is one fingerprint attracting piece of junk, so it would be nice to have a new finish this time around. Anyway, new case or not, I hope Sony gets their act together and starts publishing some games. So far they've been losing exclusives and Final Fantasy with Nomura's hermaphrodites doesn't do it for me. Let's hear some more about The Cell's untapped resources, too.
As far as electronics go, that's something we all have to accept, especially in the videogames field. That doesn't mean people shouldn't feel screwed about it, but that it's to the point of inevitable -- the revisions. You paid the price for having the console or handheld early, so you should feel great. ;-)
I don't regret it. It's just that "back in the day" a single console model would last a bit longer. It's not like revisions are something new ... How many Famicom versions are there? And MegaDrive? I'm fine with that. But at the same time I would like DS Lite to last a bit longer than it did. The first DS was a brick, so no complaints when they made Lite. PS3 has been around for a few years now, so I guess it's only natural for it to finally transform. Let's hope that gamers actually benefit from this. After all, revisions should be all about improvements.
I love my imported black DS vs DS Lite....but that damn screen... Man I hate glossly black electronics, pisses me off! I'm starting to think I'm one of the few people here who actually likes digital downloads. Of course, this is just has of this month!
