Of course it's upgraded. But I agree they're similar. Imagine if the had released Wii instead of GC eight years ago. Oh, and contrary to what someone said, Gamecube did get a better looking redesign. Though it was Japan exclusive...
Digital downloads SUCK and you know it. I'm not against the concept of digital downloads, I just hate the whole DRM bit. Especially when it comes to solutions like Steam. You buy a game, you get the CD key, and after you install everything you still need to download ten goddamn gigabytes from the internet. It doesn't stop the piracy and every single Valve game is out there, for every torrent whore to enjoy. And they don't need a DRM infested client to run their "copies". Same with cellphone games, which in most cases are locked to a single IMEI number. You paid for a game, yet you can't transfer it to another compatible device you own. Sure, some companies will give you a new activation, but some won't.
DRM can suck. I like digital distribution because I'm moving and it's saving me a fuckdick load of space selling the hard copies and using VC etc, and the games are cheaper, plus convenience. It works out great for me. So far DRM hasn't bit me in the ass. Steams prices are garbage though (great deals though), but there client is pretty useful with auto updates, etc. Thats kind of the concept of digital downloads! Stuff like GOG.com helps with that. But really, so far I haven't got fucked by DRM, so I dunno.
I was talking about Valve's retail titles which, despite the disc you get when you buy them, require a shitload of data to be downloaded. This basically means the game you just bought is not entirely on the DVD. GOG.com is cool, I admit. They're cheap and they make it their policy not to include any protections against users [because no protection works against pirates, obviously]. I am a physical media type of guy. I'd rather get a cartridge and then use an emulator to play the game if I can't be bothered with digging up a Super Nintendo or MegaDrive than buying the same title for VC, even though it's cheaper.
Me too, but it's just not feasible space wise for me any longer. VC helps because I've got an HDTV, no room for a CRT. I'm no longer a library. =( Switching from CD's is the toughest because I like uncompressed audio and artwork....but the $$ tradeoff completely wins as does the space. Yeah, Valves CDs are weird, but honestly I don't think I ever stuck the discs in, lol. Interweb is fast enough.
four years after 360 is dumped, you can kiss your authentication laden games goodbye. It's a digital dark age for gaming, no one realizes it yet.
That's exactly what I'm saying. I don't understand why developers bother with DRM in the first place. A simple CD Key would work just fine. You want to give it away to your friends? Fine, you can do that if you're that stupid [or generous!]. Pirates will have their way with any game, and in the end, years from now, it will make things tough on legit gamers. Possibly because they couldn't be bothered? If it involves conversion, tweaks and fixes, they wouldn't give two shits.
well buddy, I like digital downloads as well, provided I can make backups or re-download them for free. I ve got a bit of a space constrain at the moment so the less space something takes up the better for me.
Yeah, in my experience it seems that CD keys seem to be the only thing that really works and isn't a huge deal. Yeah, but downloaded content and games are a huge part of this generation. I mean, even the original Xbox arcade works, as do tons of the games, so I dunno. I don't see it dying out, at least anytime soon.
Like I said, I'm not against digital downloads. I'm against copy protections which in time may render my games unplayable. GOG.com is providing digital downloads and they're DRM free ... If they can do it, others can too. True, but bigger perspective was what I had in mind. I can still play my Famicom games, even though they're really old. I can play my old DOS games via DOSBox and such, and most of them will work. Will I be able to play DRM games in 2021? I don't know. I just like the comfort of knowing that I can buy a game and even if the whole damn internet dies, I can still play it. It's my game, I bought it, I own it, I want to be able to use it - always.
Yeah, I just think that if it's going to be a much bigger deal in the future, which I think it will be, I'm sure "they" will figure it out so people don't get fucked. I dunno. Either way I don't have the space, which sucks.
So? Nintendo obviously did give Panasonic permission to do their worse. Would that mean WonderMega by Victor doesn't count either? It did get a "legit" Sega version later on, but it was the Victor design.
Exactly. If Nintendo didn't even make it, it's one helluva redesign. It's not like it's a fake chinese clone. It's a legit, licensed machine.
This discussion about companies re-designing their own product. Nintendo or Sega giving some other company permission to make their own flavour of game console is a totally different topic. -ud
