    My first TEST (DTL-H30001) :icon_bigg

Bought as a defect machine quite some time ago. The laser wasn't reading DVDs, and the seller didn't know whether this was by design or not. Ultimately, I got it for roughly the same price a defect retail one is going for ... not including quite insane shipping costs .

After cleaning the inside (fan and drive assembly had collected a rather interesting mix of grease and dust), exchanging the laser and some fiddling with the resistor pots, the machine now reads every disc I tried. However, I had to bend the laser cable a bit (directly at the connector of the optical pickup), because the replacement laser's connector is around 2mm above the connector of the original laser . I didn't notice this at first, as it didn't present a problem for most of the discs I tried; besides the ones that actually needed to load data from the outermost tracks. For these titles and a not-bend cable, the laser got stuck around 4mm before the outer end of the spindle; with the spindle still spindling (indefinitely, as the laser never reaches its intended position), this not only results in a nice sound from the guide arm slipping over the spindle, but in rather poor load times as well .

Nice. How much did you pay for Rez and MvC2?

Rez was ¥3680 (amazing condition so I am thrilled as I wanted it for ages)
MvC2 was ¥2080 (again, mint with spine - should be good to play when I get back to UK)

Isn't it crazy how much prices change. I remember getting my REZ from Akihabara in 2003 for only 480 yen factory sealed. I bet that store is kicking it's self now

480??? I haven't found any copy under 4500 one year ago, to be honest I hardly found any at all. Actually I thought 3500 for a mint one was a very good price ._:

Got an image of this as I think somewhere along the line you may have fitted the IC incorrectly. There is one length for the laser IC and it should fit all versions of laser. I.E. there is usually enough play in the cable for it not to be an issue. Is this a 3rd party laser? If so, what model ?

Yeah, I remember that year that were basically throwing away factory sealed stock of Jet Set Radio or Sakura Taisen 4 among others. Who can tell if demand for certain games will stay high? I mean, you can get a copy of Rez for the PS2 for 500 Yen used while the DC version now costs at least four times that price.

I'd have loved it to have been 480, but I am happy with the price I paid compared to what it goes for on Ebay.

Plus, I am in Japan right now, so I am happy anyway.

Right, off into a bloody hurricane into the Auckland night, four seasons in one day my arse. With about 150USD and an empty backpack, got near soaked to death but what did I come back with...

    We have

Xmas Nights. Wanted this for bloody ages. It actually got stolen out my mailbox when I lived in a dodgy neighbourhood.
Couple of Gundam games, played one yesterday, it was total crap of course.
Gungriffon, nice bitta 3D Mech action, nice.
Tokimeki Memorial, my first dating sim. It's kinda like a Tamagotchi where you get e-trim at the end. Once rated the 23rd best game ever in Famitsu you know.....!?!
Fighting Vipers, Clockwork Knight, Sakura Taisen, Sega Rally, got those. Sell em on.
    Some unidentified game
A game ided as F36000 racing. Couldn't work out what it was... It's wipeout!
Puyo Puyo 4 for Dreamcast. Nice
Super Robot Taisen, doesn't bloody work
Suiko Enbu Fuunsaiki - Obscure Data East Fighter. Plays a bit like a nice fast Street Fighter with a zooming Neo Geo background. Pretty nice actually.
One Grey jpn Sega Saturn. Think I got all three colours now. Don't know if I'll sell it on, I do like my Saturn, why not have three. Pretty minty.
    Official Sega Saturn Memory Card
My first PC Engine, PC Engine GT with 12 HuCards. At least 3 or 4 very nice 2D Shooters in there. Might get 6 AA batteries for it and go pose on the bus, show all those young whippersnappers with their PSPs a thing or two. :D

Sorry, I have only taken a picture of the drive mechanism with the original laser installed, not the replacement. The machine is in storage for the time being, but I can get it out and take some more pictures if needed. However, I doubt that there is a problem in the installation. The guide rods are at their intended position, and the machine flawlessly reads all discs, including the ones that require access to the outermost tracks.

    3rd party, PS-400Q (aka KHS-400Q). Original (defunct) one was a KHS-400B.

If you have one of each type available, when holding them side by side, you should be able to confirm that the cable connector of the 400Q is approximately 2mm above the one of the 400B. As you said, I wouldn't have expected this to be a problem, too, but it seems it is.

By the way: I had tested the same 400Q laser in another machine before (a retail SCPH-30003), and it didn't show any problems. This one has a different drive assembly than the debugging station (no tilt motor, near the white cog), so I came to think that the replacement lasers might have been designed for these later models only. After all, the additional 2mm space is not needed in later drives, so probably nobody has noticed it yet... :katamari:

You sure can be happy that I forgot that auction w/ the Rockman Adventure. I planned to bid about 10k b/c of the Super Keirin... well, at least some other Saturn complete collector got it, congrats - that was a bargain indeed :)

hehehehe, yep I got the Super Keirin as well. You do know in that auction you could only choose 2 extra games. At first I thought you got the Rockman and all the other stuff until I read the auction. I already have the Keirin game though so that will be going in my Saturn sales thread soon.

Ok, then it's not such an amazing bargain any more, but nevertheless a very acceptable price for Rockman Adv. & Keirin :)
I am still very angry on myself for a Super Kerin auction that I overslept, it ended for gruesome 550yen. >_<

Don't worry. Super Keirin pops up quite few time on Yahoo so you'll have plenty of chances to get another one
