The 400A was found in the v0 PS2's. Furthermore, they can be replaced w/ B/C lasers (KHS-400 B/C) without any issue, but not the other way around (as in a v9 , replace a C with an A, as the A is bigger than the C)

Nothing should stop the C from working in place of the A in any PS2, or even possibly a TOOL

That's not entirely true. As you say, if you look at the casements of the 400 A and 400 C they differ slightly in that the metal body of the 400 A is actually larger at one end. That in turn means that without some modification to the 400 C or the actual Tool DVD drive a 400 C will not work. As a means of testing I had to use a piece of blu-tac, which you can see in one of the images I took, so you can't simply swap them over and off you go. That said, I have not found a laser that worked with the Tool, hence the fact I have had the IC cable tested (it's OK) and now having an expert technician looking at it.

I am not familiar with the launch edition PS2 units as I've never owned a Japanese unit. By the time I got hold of one in the UK it was B/C lasers.

They may be interchangeable in retail units, but as I couldn't find any information on the Tool compatibility I wanted to be 100% sure as getting it wrong could be a serious issue. You yourself used the word "possible" in suggesting it "might" work in a Tool. Let's find out without damage lol I can atleast come back to this thread and confirm it. It'll cost me less to find out at his expense, 'cause if he screws it up, he will be responsible, not me!

I know the guy in the store well enough, so if he finds other lasers actually work in the unit without updating the firmware, he'll just tell me!

As ever with this Tool unit, it's a learning curve as I seriously doubt he's ever taken one to pieces before despite having repaired several thousand standard PS2 units and a few "variations". I know I haven't before, but considering the cost of replacement or repair if I make a mistake I'd like an opinion from the repair guy.

Thanks for the information though, and I'll pass it on. ;-)

You're trying to explore the Tool's hdd?
Why not doing directly on the Tool under linux?
