Remind me never to have kids then - I have on my desk currently, PC, Laptop, PS2, Gamecube, Lamp, Amp, Monitor, Phone etc. I also have credit card bills (eek!) Uni work, Gig tickets and pay slips.

Kids would eat every last one of them!

It was a good deal. The seller tried to sell it on eBay a few months ago and as predicted at that time it was pulled. Having emailed to enquire about it, he emailed me and quoted the price he wanted. Cheaper than buying a new PS2 and a couple of games. Well, considering at the time I was no more than a bucket of bolts I'd have been daft to have paid any more.

    Very Impressed...

How come some slip through the Ebay net and others get pulled?

Good question! At one point almost everything with the right keywords were being pulled left, right & centre. I knew people who'd tried a number of different listings who immediately discovered that the item would be pulled no matter how they described it.

Whether Sony have just thought "f it!" or eBay have changed their policy, or the guy who normally is employed to piss all us development kit lovers off is on holiday, who knows!

I was amazed when the latest batch of PS2 dev kits were allowed to continue.

My PS2 Test unit however was another example of this. I placed a bid, a few days later I was emailed by eBay and they informed me that the auction had been pulled. No reference to it anywhere, but again thinking it would happen I had already exchanged details with the seller and again dealt with it off eBay. A bit riskier I know.

It's pot luck, completely without any rules I guess and some get through whereas others don't.

I hesitate to say whether it is better that they are allowed to continue or not. On one hand I've benefitted from the auctions that have been pulled in that sometimes sellers would offer the item at the price that the auction was pulled at, but at the same time I think it's great to see other units turning up and selling for reasonable prices on BIN, that way people aren't expected to pay stupid prices for things.

As per my other thread on the PS1 debug systems, sometimes they tend to go for far more then the regular market value via ebay though.. but i guess thats how it goes!

Pot luck mate! A few people have commented on the low, low prices I tend to purchase things for. Trust me I have bought a few items at prices that have made me cry, but I can't go into them. On the other hand, I do tend to seek bargains in the most unlikely places. Even on eBay you are more than likely to come across badly listed, incomplete items, faulty items or things that other people take one look at and think - no!

Collectors like pristine boxes, gleeming cases, not a scratch on the hood, not a dig in the box. Fine! I'd love that, but I am not a rich man, my kids needs shoes and my life is not just consoles. My biggest passion is films and in the past I've spent much more on film than I've spent on all my dev items combined! <Not a lot of people know that, because this ain't a film site>

The Net Yaroze I have was listed simply as "Rare black PS1" for instance.

I am taking this WAAAAYYYYY OT, but please indulge me for a second.

Not many collectors would buy this:

In a word it looked crap when it arrived and I thought "$50 down the drain then". It had a faulty laser, but I had a spare. The front of the tray was missing, but again easy to obtain. Other than that it was purely cosmetic. The images on the auction looked worse though and it only got 3 or 4 bids.

    An hour later...

I ain't too choosy and I'll buy something and just wait for months before I get all the pieces or fix it (normally without a long thread).

Anyway, I think a new general chat re Sony dev should be formed and this thread closed if everyone posting here is in agreement. The information in it might be useful to others who are trying to get their units running again however.

I ll agree with Parris, since many people seem to be getting TOOLs lately and they ll need to know the basics from somewhere.

I'm gonna OT a little, Parris for cleaning the outside of your hardware stuff, what are you using? (The baby wipers or something else)
Barc0de, I just unpacked the two Tools from YJ, you said yours was in bad shape, you'll have to look at mines!

Baby wipes are only good on PCB and the like - must be GOOD baby wipes like Pampers as cheaper ones are TOO wet. Let the baby wipes sit for 10mins or so before using them as some of the stuff on them evaporates. I take a pile of them out and leave them in a plastic bag rather than using them directly from a pack. Watch the ones at the bottom for exactly the same reason, they tend to be full of the cleaning stuff. They are not good on plastics. I firstly took the unit completely to bits and washed in washing up liquid (something expensive like fairy which cuts through all grease). Once it is assembled then I stick to a light cloth with washing up liquid on it (neat) and wiping off with a soft dry towel. Don't use polish as all you end up with is smears, wax and a build up of finger prints.

** Please note, I don't put electrical items in the bath or any water! Baby wipes (as I have discovered) are excellent for removing stubborn grease, stains and nonsense with very careful cleaning on PCB. <Note to others: If you fry your ass trying this, don't sue me!>

Personally, I like the way the TOOL Saga is panning out.

It shows a much better connection in this community than I would have though existed a few months ago. Even after my own minimal involvement in getting the TOOL of Parris's to work, I do like to think this is a good community effort :)

i agree totally.. having only been here a short space of time i feel that if i were to go ahead an invest in a broken dev/debug system of any kind the overall support i (may?) get from other forum users is enough to not make me worry to much about any minor niggles the units may have!
