What windows version, if any, do you have on your pc now?
And how much free diskspace do you have?

You might want to use the win32 dd version, worst case scenario it doesn't work and you'll have lost more time than doing the procedure with linux directly.

Just downloading from your ftp at present HDD1 - I noticed there was a file I had missed off the original dump.

Windows XP. I've got 24Gb of free space, so no need to worry about that. More than enough to cope I should think. Normally my PC has 160Gb of HDD space, but I have had to remove the 2nd drive for the PS2 Tool HDD.

That would have been great, considering I was more or less 19 at the time SCEI designs it, plus the fact I don't speak japanese...

Parris, if you connect the Tool hdd on the secondary controller, you could decompress the dump yourself on your 160GB and not rely upon the integrated gzip code in the win32 dd wich may be a little old(old version of gzip couldn,'t deal with file over 4GB correctly), and you may gain some speed too as the file won't have to be decompress on-the-fly...

So far so good. Had to find another version of Knoppix on a NJ site as it failed to start upload. Apart from that everything is fine. Just burn iso, it seems to want to auto start so.... back soon!

UJ, I actually understand why, even if not how, but as I am this far without any hitches I am going to just continue with the way this PC is currently set up. I might try that for HDD2 if this one is seriously slow for decompression, but as it stands Knoppix is the route we are taking tonight.

Back later, hopefully with good news!
** Edit, spelling mistake corrected - why on earth did I write that in the first place? In a rush I guess, poor excuse. Must try harder!

Well, so far so good. The command is in, the files appear to be being copied over and the HDD light on my PC has been going nuts for almost 2hrs. I shall report back tomorrow.

I would have chosen tomsrtbt because of its size, 2.88MB, and because the task to fulfill doesn't really requires kde nor gnome...but hey it's your choice, and obviously a GUI is always appealling to a linux noob :)

I hope it's working fine right now!

As long as you didn't mixed up the if= and of=, you should be allright!

Very much so. It looks very good and I might explore the OS a bit further after all this is done. All is well at present. The HDD are churning away.

Sadly dd doesn't show the progress as you surely noticed, you could have use a script like the one here http://shellscripts.org/project/ddprogress, but as you started it 2hours ago, it would be stupid to stop it now...

Yeah, it's slow work without a progress report of any kind as you just don't know whether everything is ok or not.

If everything IS okay and I replace the HDD in the PS2 Tool tomorrow, what is the next step? Will the PS2 Tool boot and require the passwords you mentioned?

Also in preparation I tried installing ProDG onto my PC last night and found it wouldn't work as it could find no libraries.

    >58600080+0 records in
    >58600080+0 records out
    300003240960 bytes (30 GB) copied, 6750.1 seconds, 4.4Mb/s

    >root!tty2: etc etc etc

I put my PC to sleep, placed the HDD back into the PS2 Tool and booted........ nothing.......... nothing.......... wait a minute.... LIFE!

It took a while and the fact the PS2 Tool HDD light didn't run constantly made me think it was stopped, but Linux began to load it and it got to a prompt for a username / password.

So, ladies & gentlemen a fully functional HDD, in a PS2 Tool that has risen from the grave!

I'd like to thank Unclejun for his continual assessment of the situation, his hard work in obtaining the boot images and for putting up with my ceaseless questions.

I'd also like to thank J for rewriting the Linux command codes at about midnight as the version of Linux I obtained automatically mounted the HDD and I kept getting errors. He then sat me through until I got to the load section.

Also Barc0de for pushing me not to split this unit up, PA for his efforts in getting me earlier information, Old Engineer for his discussions and information re the PC card, plus assurance he'll help me with the IC cable if it is faulty, plus a whole host of other contributors on this and the other PS2 Tool threads which have sprung up suddenly.

Without the efforts of all these people I know for certain, inspite of my determination to get the hardware going I never would have.

I apologise profusely for my noob questions and seeming inability to comprehend various aspects of what is clearly understandable to the majority of other posters on this forum. Ho hum, the learning curve is shallower or wider depending on your starting point ;-)

Seriously, thanks, it's really has been a team effort!

Its 4am, I have just tidied up and sealed the PS2 Tool case, ensured the CDrom drawer still opened / closed. Put all the tools away and now I am shattered. Must...go...to...bed!

    Catch everyone soon

UJ, I'll do HDD2 at the weekend. Now I know the procedure it will just sit overnight.

What's next? (supposing I can run this thing without HDD2 being copied over) If not then tonight is the night lol.

If it boots without errors, the Tool should display the tool network info screen on a tv using the ps2 multi output.
you can log on the administrative interface using a webbrowser with the IP 10.0.0.2, if I remember the network settings correctly.

I'll be able to test this better tonight. I have a small portable I can use and a second monitor in the attic. I had to swap cables last night and that isn't ideal.

Is there a specific procedure to run a retail PS2 title as that's all I have to test whether the CD drive is working properly? The IC cable is looking a bit thread bare and frankly I'd be surprised if the laser had much life left in it. I'll need to pop something in to test.

Having taken time off from DIY to get this far, I am back on the case again with some bits and pieces. Nothing major, but it does mean I have to close and go do that. The PS2 Tool will have to wait until tonight.

Okay, root / root and in.

    Presented with [root@ps2_000002 /root]# <cursor>

it's winking away at me nicely.

Also presented on the TV with the PS2 cube screen (Network Information)

You are correct the IP is 10.x.x.x as suggested.

So, now to the PC and get that side sorted. When you have the time can you PM me and explain how to get the CDr working and tested. I want desperately to see this unit running more than a command line lol.

    Ooooo, this is good!

The sound of the fan is incredible however! Man, is this a loud unit! Anyone developing Sony titles would definately be going home after a days graft with a bug in their ear.

Running a cd on the Tool:
    http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6944

Once you have prodg installed, run the target manager, connect to the Tool, then click on reset, and enter the parameters for the iop and ee from the thread.
Or you may type the command directly in linux on the Tool, I haven't tested that way, so do it and report your results, if any.
