I agree with this. Even if you don't want to release it, the whole glitch/freeze issue scares me. I would definitely look into getting that sucker dumped. Of course I think there would be people willing to fund a release for that. People have really wanted this for a long time.
Dude I hope this week goes by fast, I can't wait to see a video/screenshots of this booted up on your Genesis/Mega Drive. I hope it's not a pirated cart though... :\ Take good care of it please.
I have not dumped it yet but I definitely will in the next week using the Sega CD Transfer method! Hopefully using the real hardware will guarantee an uncorrupted dump... I make shows for a living, so I plan to shoot video of me dumping the cart & each level will be its own episode! Because youtube is lame about this type of video, I plan on releasing the show as download only, meaning that each episode will be downloaded from links I post in a topic. Yes, I also plan to release the rom!....when the combined views of all episodes = at least 50,000!!! .... & all episodes are released. Does this sound fair? No donations necessary, instead you just download videos from my links... The back of the cart has a sticker that says "PROPERTY OF TELEGAMES" with contact info...
I've never known Youtube to be "lame" about this type of video, there are tons of videos documenting various types of prototypes. I'm not saying I won't necessarily download the videos. I'm just saying that you might get more (trackable) views if you upload to Youtube as well as making (higher-quality?) downloadable videos. Does the cart feel heavier than the average retail game? That's a dead tip-off that it's at least an EPROM board. If it feels the same or lighter, then it may be a bootleg cart (although even in that case it could still be a prototype build, we know that there were some bootleg carts made containing the later Sonic 2 alpha).
I may upload the videos to another service but my concern is about them being removed & copyright claim / attention from SEGA... Also, in this new age of youtubes, it might be kind of cool to release this in a retro way... I'm out on assignment right now but when I get back, some time next week, the videos will reveal all, including me opening the cart (which I have not done yet)...
SEGA doesn't really seem to give a shit about their old stuff. I mean, Sonic Retro hosts entire disassemblies as well as multiple prerelease versions of Sonic games, and they're in good with SEGA at the moment. Speaking of Sonic Retro, I'm sure they'd enjoy having you come by and discussing what you currently know about this cart. If you decide to do so, I'd recommend using the same user name and mentioning in your validation thread that you're the guy from ASSEMbler's who has the S1 review cart The most I'd expect SEGA to do if you uploaded the videos to Youtube would be to monetize your videos by requesting ads be aired in front of your videos. I'm not so sure they're even do that. Regardless of how you do it, I'll be sure to watch your videos as you put them out. The only games I'd be even more interested in seeing a prerelease/prototype build of would be SMB1 and SMW
What hes getting at is SEGA or someone affiliated made copyright strikes on uploaded Shining Force videos.
Unless these differences show the game in an earlier state of development, rather than just glitches and nothing too remarkable, I don't think the videos will get get so much attention that Sega would take care to notice. There's already tons of Sonic gameplay videos all over Youtube and they haven't been getting taken down, after all. This is coming from someone who saw the original auction for this cart and just assume it's likely final though. As people pointed out on Sonic Retro, I remember now it stated you start off with 40 lives and was used to take screenshots. I just summed it up to being a pirate with a mistaken identity as a review copy. Care to elaborate on what's different, or is that a surprise? If it's a surprise, I hope it's worth the suspense
Hi Bramsworth, The truth is that I have not played this yet. Its still at my office waiting for me. Everything I have described is obviously from the auction & the sellers word. You will find out the truth the same time I will, because the camera will be rolling... The auction says you start out with 40 lives... this could simply be a flag created by the sonic team for testing & then later activated by pirates?? I also read that there is a sonic 8 bit pirate with 40 lives? The seller told me there is graphical differences but didn't elaborate. Also that it often freezes and crashes... If it's just a pirate, why would it say "PROPERTY OF TELEGAMES" on the back??:encouragement: Has anyone ever found this outside of a multi cart?? thank you evilhamwizard from sonic retro! "Telegames was a UK based shop that existed for a while and I believe they sold a lot of the old stuff they had very recently. Telegames created a promo video in 1990 demonstrating at least 400 games including the unreleased Konix Multisystem. I noticed that in the video, many of the games that are shown are the Japanese versions. I don't know if they are prereleases or not though. No Sonic in the video, but it might give you some ideas as to what they were able to get their hands on" Much respect to everyone here & all of your generous contributions! I hope that this will be one that I can offer all of you...
Trust me, Sega is not gonna copyright strike the videos... as long as this doesn't turn out to be Shining Force 3. But really, my own Youtube has plenty of Sega stuff and no strikes of note are hitting my channel here. I'm sure you'll be alright if you upped this.
Well, that sorta changes things. Thought you played it already. Don't get your hopes up either, since that 40 lives thing really makes it feel like it could just be a pirate. As for graphic differences, that Sonic Retro thread showed a pic of the common 40 lives pirate, with the title screen looking a bit messed up. That could be what the guy was talking about, and just pulling the old trick of being ambiguous so he could make a sale =p Anyway, you've got us waiting in suspense so I look forward to this. I'll just try to completely forget this 40 lives thing and think positive thoughts.
If people really want to watch this on youtube I will upload it there... Exactly what I've been going through...
I'm trying to piece this mystery together...do any of these carts come from Telegames too? I'm guessing if you open these up you'll find that they're not pirates, but production games without labels. I seem to recall that the ones with white stickers were distributed by Majesco in its earliest days as a company.
Hi TheRedEye, I found those snes games a few years ago on ebay from a completely different seller. Pacman 2 & Battleship with labels were found at an outside market. I wonder who would make production games without labels? Maybe there the first test carts off the factory assembly line? I was accidentally sent an orange N64 instead of these games! I enjoyed it for a few days & then exchanged it for my real order...
That was this auction, wasn't it? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SEGA-MEGA...LE-/251197789912?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123 I remember looking at it and being put off by the lack of details and pictures, seemed rather dodgy, however, I look forward to being proved wrong. May I ask what you paid for it?
Nah, they're most likely just carts with the labels torn off and someone marked what they are. Not too uncommon. Especially when browsing auctions in MercadoLibre. So many lableless carts, or sometimes carts with someones own "artwork" on it.
