So is it actually Sony banning people, or could it be Activision? As people aren't banned from PSN, only Call of Duty...
Norway's Consumer Council, independent government agency, finds that Sony breached the law by removing Linux OtherOS support I know Norway is perhaps not a big country. But I like their attitude towards Sony In the area of Linux .
No. You can't just download and burn isos and then play them on a 360, there's a whole convoluted process of hacking the machine first so obviously it's less simple. You can also run PS3 games off DVD-R if they'll fit, I think. I haven't heard of anything like this. You just copy the game directory to an external HDD and it works. Bullshit. Most people will use it to pirate games. Well, yeah. That's kind of the point.
Xbox 360 requires one major step that will stop most people. Opening the console up. PS3, you don't have to do that. That alone is a major factor for many people. I would argue that if you are downloading games that PS3 and 360 are equally complex processes to bootleg games to the average user. However PS3 you can actually rip the game yourself if you have the disc. This is not possible for 360 unless maybe if you JTAG mod your xbox and have some program on there to rip the discs. But that's more complicated to JTAG mod your xbox.
Not sure if this is posted elsewhere here or not, but I found this link on another forum. Apparently, the PS3 has a rootkit in the newest security update. Though it doesn't seem to be active yet. http://www.jailbreakscene.com/2011/01/official-ps3-firmware-v356-has-rootkit.html
Blame the people hacking the PS3. Most of Sony's efforts are now being spent trying to fix the security holes. Prior to this they added loads of nice new features. Just recently they added 3D mode and Netflix without disc to the firmware. It's OK to be angry, but at least be truthful. The odd security only update doesn't hurt anyone.
I updated to the latest firmware. I haven't felt comfortable enough yet to really delve into CFW at all.
Neither did I (in another subject) when it came to changing to Linux for quite some time until I have had it with Windows XP Home edition, on a so-called crappy mini laptop. And then I thought "fuck it, I am going to learn how this shit works !". And I have NOT regretted it . So my advice to you is this, save money up for a second PS3, and then make one of the two PS3´s an "off line PS3" so to speak, and if you go online on it, then you do not use it to play on, but only as "test / experimental machine". Yes, I still use Windows on my pc, that is my "normal" PC. But on my mini pc, there I use Linux. God I hate rootkits, they are just as insane as the securom, and worse DRM like StarForce, that really fucked your pc up. Even when you had reformatted the harddrive.
For those who use a non-modded PS3/360 for Online Play and another modded PS3/360 for Offline Play, Homebrew etc..., is it possible to somehow transfer all your Game Patches/Updates etc... from the non-modded PS3/360 to your modded PS3/360? If so, how? USB Stick, FTP?
I plan on doing the same thing, if I can scrap the money together to get another Playstation 3, I'll put CFW on it, however I will not do it on my main unit. And its not because I'm worried about Sony seeing what I'm doing, its more of there is nothing that can be yet with CFW that I want, I don't see a clear advantage to going that route yet, yes there are many promising features that could result from it, but at the moment, I don't see anything for me personally anyway . . . -Disjaukifa
If Sony installs a rootkit, can a hacked PS3 console exploit it when it's connected on the internet and pwn another users box? Also, since hacked PS3 consoles can sign and basically do anything, can't CFW just forge a reply that Sony expects?
that was so sweet. Even if I use the key I know I got it from Kevin Buttler, ie SONY. Mistake or not, they just put themselves in a legal pickle.
Just so you guys know this key actually isn't the key for signing homebrew and firmwares. It's just the key for the service mode dongle. It most likely won't hurt Sony's case at all.
Hmmm since a "penguin"(TUX) loving friend of mine wrote to me about what Asbest OS can do. I was thinking, if a man had partioned his harddisk in his his PS3 and installed Linux on it before FW3.21 would it be possible to have Linux and the newest FW on the PS3 at the same time ? Cause then, you basically just need a way to downgrade to FW 3.20, and then partition the harddrive into a Linux part, and then upgrade the other part into the newest FW. Or has Sony fucked the Linux users over, if they have done it that way ?
Negative. If Sony said - "hey! here's out encryption key, use it whenever you wish", then yes. But putting a random string of characters on twitter, even if it was a reply and represents the key, does not legitimize the hacking of their console.
However here is a sony employee openly putting proprietary keys on the internet. Since GeoHot, in a different way, was doing the same thing, it could be used by defense to show that their own company is releasing this information.
it doesn't legitimize it but you forget the impact that it can have on a jury. i.e "this is the same company who's agent tweeted an otherwise secret hex key. the same people left a huge whole inside the hardware by not generating a random seed" etc. It can be detrimental in showing how seriously Sony took security and thus how much they deserve what they're getting.
