This is my greatest fear. If you don't know how to use IRC, trying to get anything off whatever channel has/had xbox stuff is a nightmare. And it only added insult to injury that they only allowed you to download a certain amount of files per day or you would be permanently banned. heres a few things I dont understand: 1) how do people seemingly magically create a non-official SDK that works with game hardware? How is it possible to reverse engineer such a thing without actually working for the company that produced the original SDK? If you create an unofficial SDK while constantly referring to the official one, don't you just end up with an official SDK where files and functions have different names? and if only naming conventions are different....then its not actually different... 2) Why is illegal content somehow immune to the law when it hits IRC? The only reason I can possibly think of is that IRC can be so diffcult to use for new users, that game companies just go "well shit. its on IRC and I don't know how to use it. You win this time, warez scene *shakes fist angrily*"
Once the secret is out, you can't stuff it back in the box. All you can do is make the box so crummy no one wants it any more. If Sony keeps going the way it is... Mission accomplished!
You'd have to keep uploading it alot. All file services like mediafire do pull down content when reported or found to violate a copyright. Sure their system doesn't do it automatically but stuff can be pulled. So really it would be a cat & mouse game. Some of those services also do log your IPs. It not the same across many platform. A lot are done through pure brute hacking, some are done thanks to a game who releases with debug data still in it's elf (they use this to find out addrs to commands and what not), and etc. I can tell you for the PSP, the PSP sdk was built pretty fast due to how the PSP works. Software libraries are not really compiled into the game elf. They're reference modules much like how a PC uses DLLs (on the PSP they are PRX). A few launch titles left a lot of debug info in them (namely puzzle bobble) which was a basis to find some of the prx function calls. From there it was breaking down prx to find out how they work and going from there. The prx them self are stored on the HW in flash and can be loaded by games at will. As for the CPU end, that's not a big issue once you can find an exploit to get code running. Not many systems really go out of their way to build custom CPUs, most are built off a common architecture and in most cases you can bet your ass there is a GCC compiler that's already been built for the same or close cpu. IRC isn't. It's just a lot harder to shut down due to it's nature. Do note that sometimes companies set up fake file servers on IRC to log IPs of people who where downloading from them. Just because you're on IRC doesn't make you anonymous.
You don't need to use the official SDK to code for a platform. If I compile an executable with my own SDK that isn't built upon Sony's existing libraries and doesn't reference any of Sony's code then it's perfectly legal to distribute just about anywhere in the world. This happened extensively on the Dreamcast with KOS.
Re: mediafire/rs/megaupload -the RIAA doesn't pull blogspot accounts that do nothing but pos full albums of music, and most of the links are still veyr active (like, 95% that I come in contact with) . I think they're pretty "safe", it just depends onthe sites that are linking to them, and if people use redirection sites (even tinyurl) then there's no fear of the host saying "this file has been getting xxxx hits from yyyy site since they'd all be from the redirector. Not to say that I think it's bulletproof, but that plenty of illegal filesharing has no trouble using these methods. I Just await how this will pan-out. PSP custom firmware is at a bit of a standstill but there are many ways around not being able to have the latest fw turn into a cfw. I hope it ends up similarly, where the homebrew seems pretty much completely in-tact and the only headway people have to make is towards piracy. Though on the other hand, I love having my UMDs ripped to ISO, but that's because a portable is more fun when you don't have to carry your UMDs around. Side-note: what's the legality behind having a "backup" (assuming the backup is legal and all that jazz) of a sealed game? I justify some of my sealed purchases (especially PSP and DC) by knowing I can (semi-illegally...) attain a rip of the contents and still get to play the game on the hardware.
just use PMs, no need to devise methods of risking the site's legality publicly. I mean whoever needs anything better have friends to be worth something.
While nobody will grind your ass over it, it's actually illegal. Fair use (in usa) lets you make a personal backup. You never did, you just took someone else's backup. Another point is, you never open the software thus never really agreed to their software agreement (exception with the few games that make you physically agree to it in game). So there is probably another legal issue there as well.
Really people should just simple spend 5 mins on google and be done with it. It gets annoying when reading on sites like IGN where people think mods have the IQ of a door knob. Do they really think a mod would not get this.. "aww i wish i could see. Poor Me!" :banghead:
excellent point, I forgot about the licensing. Pretend I didn't admit to that. I still don't understand the mindset of people (or kids, probably) who ask for handouts when it comes to content location. The guys who try to hyjack threads with their personal wants and don't even attempt proper grammar. Hell, I had my own switchouse account when I was 12 and strove to blend in and not act like a child.
It looks like Linux is very close to making its return, with added Slim support. The project also has a great name: AsbestOS.
It sounds good but barely anyone will be able to use it. From what I've read it needs 64K flash memory which none of the cheap versions of the jailbreak or the dev boards have. Hopefully there will be a way around this
I can't wait for a small lunux and all spu ready to go! The number crunching power is immense.... rendering.... (slobber)
/sign Then I would not need a new PC and could just use my PS3, if only the tiny work ram was bigger.
I'm itching to go ahead and break mine open. I have been waiting on updating but haven't gotten the balls yet. Not that I'm afraid I'll screw it up, but that I'm afraid of future consequences.
Woot! I can finally Jailbreak! Someone ported it over to RockBox for Sansa media players. I pulled out my Refurbished Sansa e250v1 that I got in a Bag of Crap from Woot about a year ago. I knew that thing would come in handy! WOOT! Edit: If you guys need help setting it up, let me know.
God, my PS3Yes! is taking forever to ship but at least it has a reflashable controller on it via software!
I got some freebies from my chinese distributor who also moves usbbreak. pm me for info I have no need for them as I don't use ps3 nor own one.
