Re: the cat and mouse analogy... Unfortunately for Sony the reality is one very large fat cat and a million mice it couldn't possibly eat.

They'll never win. Sure they might scare a few of them, but there are simply too many ways to share/sell ps3jailbreak online. They're fighting a losing battle from the start.

The funny thing is, lets say 5 years ago I would run my emulators, media centre, etc from the comfort of my xbox1 - nowadays, like many, many other people, my pc is hooked up directly to my lcd tv... 5 years ago I would've been very tempted to shell out for a ps3 to give me access (and the simplicity of use) to all these things - But things are very different now.

I find it amusing at how simple it's been to hack the ps3 but I don't see it making the waves a hacked xbox1 did all those years ago. Things have changed... and, giving it a lot of thought, I don't think I'll bother shelling out for a ps3 (and I have been sorely tempted...) My two 360's settle my current-gen gaming needs and I don't see the reason to fork out for what is, essentially, the same thing. Oddly enough, it's not the fact that it's hacked that tempts me - it's the blu-ray player!

Still, I'm fascinated by all the developments and I'd love to see NullDC ported properly - if they can make it better than real hardware, well, along with blu-ray, I might just sacrifice some shelf space under my tv, you never know.

That's what I've been thinking. I have a PC connected to my LCD screen on the living room, serving emulators (hyperspin) and running XBMC. Is it worth all the trouble to jailbreak the ps3 just for getting the samething I already have?

it all depends on how much space you have under your TV.

Why? I'm sure it won't be long after the first game requiring higher than 3.41 comes out that someone will figure out how to bypass any need to upgrade your firmware to play newer games.

PSN Distribution. So if there is any hack around, it's probably going to involve piracy.

I am getting my self a jailbreak but to be honest, I am only interested in finding a way to bypass ps2 region lock. For deving, why mess with this when I can just use a full kit at work. =P

Hah, I've always loved that vid as well as pretty much everything LRR did.

This appeals to me. Hopefully PS1 as well, eh?

So I thought it should be time for an update on this!

Seems hackers now are getting the hang of things. Released over the past two weeks and other projects in the works!

PSL1GHT - is a lightweight PlayStation 3 homebrew SDK, provided as a temporary way to compile user apps to run from the XMB using the open-source PS3 toolchains available.
    SNES9X - Now runs in 720p!
Final Burn Alpha PS3 - Arcade emulator! (Something I am really looking forward to) Not yet released but I hear the person behind it has got quite a fair bit of experience
NES emu - Close to release this actually from what I've heard
Homebrew - A few homebrew games have been appearing not had time to check them out yet
Open Manager - Much much better than the old back up manager. Most games work now and ones with problems before work better plus game updates now work without a problem.
Way around the games that require updates - Yes its happened didn't take as long as I was expecting to be honest. Medal of Honer has been confirmed to be working.
PSN>PC>PS3 - Someone made a neat app to download psn demos patchs etc straight to the PS3!

    Things are really picking up

    Hey,

    few questions.

    1. it seems backup manager 1.1 is out. Does it support ps2 games now? I though long ago there was mention that 1.1 would support ps1/ps2.

    2. Does the freeware sdk support basic gfx blitting?

Backup Manager 1.1 has barely been changed from what people have said. Open Manager does as much as it and more.

sorry for the thread semi-necromancy, but i was just curious if anyone has found out new things:

    1) has anyone tested whether a jailbroken ps3 is capable of reading/ripping preview/review/beta ps3 games? I'm sure the answer is a resounding NO, but you never know until you try

    2) aside from the SNES emulator, and the barely playable saturn emulator, have there been any new emulator releases for the ps3? I can't seem to find any new ones. it seems strange that this thing gets hacked, and the scene just quits after SNES.

Mednafen was ported which emulates NES, SMS, GameGear, GB, GBC, GBA, and PC Engine. It will support in the future PCE CD, Atari Lynx, NeoGeo Pocket Color, and Wonderswan as well. FCEUltra was ported as well as Nestopia. No MegaDrive/Genesis emulator ported yet. No N64 or PS1 emulators ported yet either. FinalBurnAlpha is being ported but unreleased so far. NullDC and PCSX2 are supposed to be in development for PS3.

The real problem is there is no site I'm aware of neatly organizing and keeping track of actual homebrew. It tends to be lightly mixed in with other hacking news.

I thought there was a pc app that updated a list of all/most home brew, downloaded and could ftp the files to the ps3.

I am waiting for some emulators and apps that tax the ps3.
So far everything has been on the old xbox and runs great there.
Some model 2 emulators with guncom3 or move support need my house of the dead 1
Arcade perfect my Saturn ver does me no good on a hd tv..
