the XBOX 360's HD-DVD does not upscale standard DVDs to my knowledge. imo, screw new HD-formats. they're lame and untested. As a person who has watched many movies in DiVX and 640x480 resolutions, I can't say I m that bothered with DVDs. I also can't justify buying new movies because unlike games you can only watch every movie so many times (especially hard to be bothered to watch a movie again if you have a photographic memory ) anyway, 360 is the way to go when it comes to games. There's been a shift in power from Sony to MS this generation and I commend it. A change in leadership is good, don't be afraid to embrace!
I hear you Barc0de...I only wish I had your photographic memory!!! ;-) Keeping with the thread: The European PS3 launch has for me, as you've just pointed out, handed the 'ace' card to Microsoft. With the XBox 360 'global' (albeit short supplied) launch back in Q4 2005 they appear to have avoided huge price differences between territories and kept with a global price reduction...and the games are 18 months ahead for the PS3. Roll-on Q3/Q4 2007...when the smoke clears. That's my plan. J.
Man those free TV sets only mean one thing: they're desperate to put even a few units on the market. Too bad people werent that smart during the PS2 launch, specially in europe when I heard is was as overpriced as it is right now. On the other hand is almost crazy how the guys at UKresistance are partying due to this. So yeah sony is going down but who cares? SEGA is already dead and nintendo is not even a shadow of its former self. So it doesnt matter how many big corporations have to leave the game, that wont bring the old companies back, not a chance... PS: jonny MS already said theres no way they'll release a X360 with HDDVD built-in, but they said they may be a Bluray or even dual drive addon on the way.
if the 360 gets an external BluRay drive, i ll buy both and sit back , having covered all the possible format bases;p still, it's a noisy machine to watch HD-DVDs on
XBox 360 with dual format or Bluray add-on player...Jeez Shadowlayer, that would kill the debate. With Sony (PS3 and Sony Pictures) set firmly with Bluray (and probably already claiming the HD victory due to PS3 numbers alone) it does leave Microsoft ready to cover both bases... I'll be watching that story very closely...thanks for the info...!!! J.
Your knowledge is incorrect, even if the statement is technically correct. The Xbox 360 will upscale standard DVDs, and you don't even need the HD-DVD add-on to do it, though you may need the VGA cable. I can't recall off-hand if it works via component or not. Can probably get around to testing it later if you're curious. -hl718
well well my nemesis! hl718! As I said, the 360's HD-DVD drive will not upscale standard DVDs. I did not comment on the XBOX 360's ability to do so though Since we re on that point though, could you please provide me with a link that states that the XBOX 360 can upscale DVD movies? I have read texts to suggest the contrary has the position changed since then? and if yes, WHICH update enabled that?
Your welcome!!! I could have got PS3 + MotorStorm but I went for Jurassic Park Rampage Edition  which is a little bit more exciting isn't it? Sabre
Do you really need a link when I'm telling you for a fact that the X360 can upscale DVDs just fine? Or am I not a good enough source? *grins* The functionality was enabled with the Fall '06 firmware update that also enabled compatibility with the HD-DVD drive. It would have been a 4000-something firmware, can't recall the exact revision number. You will need the VGA cable, but other than that no reason it shouldn't work. -hl718
What? I thought he was MY nemesis:lol: That game was pretty cool, specially the part with the boat and the Trex:nod:
that's nice mr. A Your word is good enough as anyone else's here (reffering to the truly knowledgable of course, you know who you are;p ), but a link is always more authority isnt it? I do have a VGA cable. Doesn't this update work over Component though for Tele users? @sabre: Rampage edition is as good of a game as the original Jurassic Park on the Genesis. I never understood why these jewls weren't ported to other platforms (Althoug Lost World mimics the SNES Jurassic Park top-down thing, but has more arcadey and simple fun!) - Curiously, Jurassic Park 2 on the SNES is a side-scroller, but not very good imo.
Well if I provided a link, how would you know I just wasn't linking to myself? If you have a VGA cable however you can test this yourself. Hook it up, set the resolution to anything higher than 480p and play a DVD. You'll notice that the resolution does not change. As for not working over component, blame the licensing agreements. If I'm not mistaken CSS requires that the player not output higher than 480p over component. Enabling upscaling via VGA was a legal workaround. -hl718
I have only just noticed this that I haven`t seen a single POD anywhere! I just went into a PC-World near me (Aldgate) and they had one running on a screen quite near the door But this is it Pretty damn poor show really I really hope Sony loose out big time on this Sorry fanboys
I m with you Alan. I respect their PS1 innovation, they gave the market a new direction and expanded it. I also respect the Ps2 , because seeing it in retrospect it did offer some good titles (it was bound to, being the market leader) - However, I think the most deserving console on the market at the moment is the X360. They did their homework well and X360 owners are mostly happy about aftermarket products and services The Wii is has let me down with its lack of 'liveness'. It's internet capabilities are elementary and not integrated as part of the experience. pitty,it has a lot of potential.
PS2 launched with SSX which was an amazing game at the game... Nothing epic mind you. But, it gave me a great time.
I have been and alwayts will be a fully paid up "N" fanboy I think they are in limbo at the moment as people can`t seem to get the console at the moment, but when they do some can be a little indifferent to it. Gamestation have reduced ExciteTruck to £24.99 to try and help move the stock :crying:
I guess, in a few months time, we'll look back at this thread and wonder what all the fuss was about. Again, I do agree with your points Barc0de, and I do agree that the balance (especially during this last week's launch) has moved and strengthened Microsoft's position. But, I must confess, I don't hold much against the PS3 as such...just that Sony has the bare-faced-cheek to launch a console in Europe that it has already begun price reducing elsewhere. As a die-hard Sega fan I should hate Sony to the core, but I appreciate that as a gamer, I'm the target for these big corporations in their battles for supremacy...with profits and units-shipped their goal. But, as we all know, it's not the hardware that will decide who wins, it's the games...and in this, Sony has a LOT to prove. Current score: - XBox 360 - 1 : PS3 - 0 Cheers J.
