So last week I posted an interview with Segas head of marketing, this week its Sony's turn. Sony's head of marketing explains that the reason there is no backwards compatability with PS 2 or PS 1 games with the Slim is because 90% of customers are buying the PS3 to "play PS3 games" Uh, of course they are, who would buy a PS3 just to play PS2 games?. These customers also have 10 years worth of PS2 games they want to play as well, does Sony not realize this? or care? These marketing interviews are getting out of hand. http://www.gossipgamers.com/why-the-ps3-slim-has-no-backwards-compatibility/
I've thought that Sony's marketing was clueless for a long time. Now after this interview I know it is
Isnt this where hes meant to say but from next week we shall be selling PS2 games on the marketplace?
BC was one of several features that sold me on the system (ended up getting a 80gig Motorstorm bundle)... seems like a missed selling feature to me.. and from the various outcry from potential customers.. a feature that matters to others as well.
I'll still probably get a PS3 slim, if they are reasonably priced. I want to try out God of War 3 so much.
Sony is doing with the 32X as Sega did with the Saturn. Too bad Microsoft is vltra-retarded and they don't take profit of the situation. 2 generations more like this and the Playstation brand will go to hell.
Honestly, I'm tired of the complaining about backwards compatibility. I mean you can get a PS2 new for $99. It's not like those who want backwards compatibility can't go out and purchase a 20GB or 60GB model, I did.
The thing with backward compatibility is that Sony to this day has not mastered PS1 emulation let alone PS2 emulation. The PS1 emulator you get with the PS3 often lags 2 whole frames making timing critical games unplayable. Even the first generation model with EE-chip present have issues. I tried running Gran Tursimo 4 in 1080i and it didn't work. The Dolby Digital 5.1 intro with Gran Turismo 4 also didn't work. It's sloppy woprk at best. Another bad decision they made is dropping the PS1/PS2 controller ports to save a few pennies. Without a proper PS1/PS2 controller ports you cannot properly play many games. DDR without a dance platform? Ridge Racer without a neGcon? Time Crisis without a Guncon?
BC is a nice feature to have if it works. It would be great to be able to play 3 generations of games on one console. But it doesn't work right. PS2 playing PS1 was pretty good but wasn't perfect. I don't think that PS3 playing PS1 or PS2 games would ever work well enough for one reason being that PS3 is supposed to play High Def games where PS1 and PS2 are best played on a 480i CRT in RGB. So the way I see it you really are better off with a PS2 (and PS1) on a RGB monitor and have your PS3 with your 360 on a nice High Definition display.
While i (think) i understand the parallel you are drawing.. but comparing the PS2 library and the value it would bring to the PS3... to the 32x and the library it would have brought to the Saturn... there is a big difference.. (Would 32x developement continued had the Saturn been compatable with it... possibly.. but who knows for sure)
Exactly. Why people want to be able to horribly emulate their old games on the PS3 is beyond me. No joke. -ud
First price, now backwards compatibility? If you wanna play PS2 games, buy a fucking PS2, they're like $30, or even better use PCSX2.
Don't blame Sony, blame the customers and the data they collected. Besides, I'm sure someone will come up with a way to enable BC via software emulation on the PS3, since that's what they do now anyway on the current PS3s out there.
Even better use PCSX2? How is that better? Nothing beats using the original system. And it's not the PS2's are hard to find. They are easy to find and pretty cheap. While PCSX2 has its place I really don't see it as a viable alternative to getting a real system.
PCSX2 beats the original system by far, ignoring the compatibility issues that still exist. Cant really beat some of the PS2 games being rendered in HD, especially with a lack of SDTVs in some of our homes.
Just for the record, the PS3 "Slim" does play PS1 games http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/18/tabulator-ps3-slim-and-phat-sized-up/ As for PS2 games , i guess they'll see in the future the bad decision they took. Lots of PS2 games could be sold easily on PSN Store, like the current PS1 games. Microsoft is doing that with Xbox games being sold on Live. Again, it's their loss really. What i think it's funny is that they are on their 3rd logo design: http://kotaku.com/5340456/sony-completely-rebrands-the-playstation-3 And this time it will affect game packaging, acessories, etc. http://kotaku.com/5340458/ps3-slim-already-has-a-bundle-deal On game packaging, no more PlayStation3 on the side, but PS3 on the top. (The standard for some time). http://kotaku.com/5339148/why-does-the-eyepet-box-art-look-different-from-other-ps3-games
