Just updated my older 'phat' PS3 with V3.00 and gone is the Playstation 3 logo looking like a Spiderman logo rip off and it's replaced with the same PS3 logo found on the slim packaging & SKD. Sigh! However the UI is better and also I just noticed the TV icon, which allows me to watch BBC iPlayer. Just wait until Sony produce limited edition slims and we'll all be over 'em like a rash! Anything a little different and we are in there!
Start up jingle has altered. The watery swoosh in the background remains, however there are now tiny little flecks flickering around like fairy dust or iron filings, depending on your preference!
It was large enough to be annoying. 1) Click on HOME. 2) Get "You must update" message. 3) Apply update. 4) WTF? Why is everything so BIG? Most annoyingly, I still haven't found a menu option to return the font back to its original size. And Sony didn't say anything about messing with the display format in the release notes. Stupid. -hl718
Never understood why people wanted backwards compatability to be fair... I mean when you guys got your first colour tv many moons ago did you turn said colour off and watch your shows in black and white? Or in a stack system, when you can get tracks on cd you wouldnt listen to a cassete. if you must play those ps2 games, buy a cheap ps2, simples. How many of you actually play original xbox games on 360 nowadays?
You missed the point. Sony marketed the PS3 as a "Does Everything" product and then got rid of the PS2 support. Instead of making a PS3+ (with ps1 and ps2 bc) and a normal PS3 (only PS1 bc), they got rid of the PS2 bc but didn't lowered the price of it. They only did it now, with a major revision of the console. Anyway, imagine you see a brochure of a new car, promising lots of features. You then go and buy it. But suddenly you start to notice that some stuff like the engine is not 2.0 turbo, but normal 2.0. The wheels aren't the same previously marketed, etc, etc, etc. While you don't care about PS2 games, some people do. They could just go and get a PSTwo, but some people don't like multiple electronics on their TV racks. Some just wanted to play one particular game, something that makes investing money in a PS2 totally pointless. The point is when you market a product with lots of features, expect people to complain when you remove any of them in a product revision. Sony knows they should have PS2 bc, simply by the fact they'll re-release God of War and God of War 2 on a way you can play them on the PS3. They can eventually release a PS2 emulator someday though.
PS2 back compat is a bitch because of how quirky and odd PS2's hardware was and how quirky PS3's hardware is too lol. That's why the first PS3 models came with PS2 hardware inside to guarantee backwards compat. Of course, that model was also $600 so having some retro PS2 hardware inside wasn't quite as much of a sting to cost. Even 360's XB1 backwards compat is troublesome and Xbox 1 was pretty straightforward hardware.... And of course Wii is basically a Cube so BC is super easy there.
Well this only shows how they made a big mistake promoting PS2 bc on the PS3 unveiling. If it was a bitch on the first place why not remove it from the original design and then promote it's "retro" capabilites of being able to play PS1 games (at the time "retro" was a big selling point, with the Wii having lots of classics) and say that a PS2 "emulator" would probably be launched in the future. Even if this never materialized, the lie would be understandable. They did this with the mentioned features of the PS2 Online a.ka.a the BBNavigator (that never was made avaiable in the west): - PS2 Player / PS2 Emulator -> Probably like the HDLoader, but with some security added to it (maybe require the disc on the tray to work). Also possible to download games online - Movie Channel / Real Player for PS2 -> Install DVD Movies / Download Movies online - Video Mail - DVR (TV Tuner) Curiously almost all those features are avaiable in the PS3. The PS3 install PS3 games for faster loading, download PS1 games, is able to play Blu-ray / DVD Movies and download movies online and watch TV online on it (Sky, in Europe). Anyway, i honestly don't care about PS2 bc anyways, as i still have my phat one. I prefer a cheaper PS3, like now. But removing a feature, after the console was released will always generate complaints.
To be fair a colour TV is backwards compatable with black and white TV programs  Again if you had a stack system and no CD burner then you might copy tracks you listen to onto said tapes and listen to that... Great another pad, lead and AV lead to have too. The thing is that backwards compatability on the PS3 is a nice feature and I do use it often, I travel a lot so being able to play all my games that I can take with me is a boon.
I'd like a backwards compatible PS3, if there was a decent PlayStation to PS3 pad adaptor. Not being able to play IIDX with a proper controller would kill me.
Something like this? http://www.amazon.com/PS2-Playstation-Controller-Adapter-Converter-3/dp/B001QCDNCS/ref=pd_sbs_misc_2
hmmm seems i got blown out of the water on my post.. cant say i can even argue with those comments either! Surly sony dont advertise this new slim ps3 as being able to play anthing though do they? I havent followed ps3 news for a long time but i do remember that you had to buy a specific model for backwards compat mode. I personally have SHED loads of old games, and the systems to play them on, so much so that i have a seperate storage for thousands of discs i own. However, its VERY rare that i do actually dig out a system to play them on, and generally when i do i end up dissapointed that i ruin a perfectly good memory of a game gone by, with the obvious exception to mario kart for teh snes! I used to own a fat ps3, only used it for MGS to be fair then it became a bluray player and nothing more, i sold it a while back to a friend and have a dedicated player now. Dont get me wrong im not anti sony or anything, just never really thought the ps3 was all that to begin with.
