Backups are rarely stored on the same servers. Supposedly, the huge down time is due to them redesigning the infrastructure to make it more robust to future intrusion attempts.

The thing about anonymous is that anyone can claim to be part of them, there isnt an official member list like with past hacker groups.

Thats what the name implies, get it?

Anyways, sony really fucked themselves in the ass going after Geohot, they should've modified new PS3s instead, just like MS modified X360s so you couldnt do JTAG anymore.

Anonymous is not so anonymous I guess. :/

Still, that doesn't really suggest that they're behind this downtime.

If the FBI is arresting people, they have some evidence.

If this is over access into devnet, I find it a little odd since devnet is supose to be IP locked. I guess that only relates to the web/sdk portion and not the dev PSN. If so, That was a really bad cock-up there sony.

I read this in the past (haven't checked the Magic Box link fully). The 40 arrest warrants are not over PSN but over previous issues regarding attacks over services that ban donations to Wikileaks.

More likely people got access to the credit card database.

The psn stuff seems to be related only because they have to rewrite all their payment gateways and apps for better protection.

I doubt a ps3 console is involved in the hacking in any way other than being used to expose the exploits to get to the cc numbers.

We will never know I'd wager.

Sony = shareholders dictate our wealth and shareholders hate Instability.

That and the Japanese secrecy from the Gaijin and we will all still be talking of the great "psn maintenance outtage of 2011" for years to come

Anonymous isn't some elite group of hackers. It's a bunch of 13-19 year old boys in an IRC server using a DDOS program called LOIC to send packets to the target IP they set in the channel. It's useless on it's own, but when you have 800+ people doing it at once it does damage but nothing long term. You can go look at their chats in their IRC server and realize how lame and uninformed they are about the subject. You just press a button and ddos a server.

Seems to be down right now. But if you could imagine all the kids who wrote batch scripts to delete system32 on the school computers put into one room; that's basically what you have here. It's something more deep than these guys..

Pretty much. It is amusing to watch mainstream journalists struggling to wrap their minds around the concept and usually they don't get it, but yeah. They aren't "hackers", any more than a joyrider is a rally driver.

This is what people dont get about anonymous: they arent invincible, they are not even a group!

Anyone can claim to be them so you cant defeat them since once you take one of the fuckers out a new one desperate for attention and street creed replaces it.

So at the end is no different than taking a gang out and a new one using the same name arises to take that turf.

Anonymous isn't anybody. It's everyone. You're missing the point.

I could be part of "anonymous" tomorrow.

Any group claiming to be them isn't them because it's just a title.

Wouldn't Sony make offline backups of the servers fairly frequently though? I'm kind of glad I haven't started using my PS3 yet :p.
