I imagine they always saw a future (possibly because they are on drugs) where another device would play UMDs and would use the full resolution. Or perhaps they always had TV out planned.
They actually were going to make a standalone UMD player, but when the bottom fell out of the UMD Movie market they killed it...
Probably the hardware only supports linear access to the framebuffer. Maybe they felt it wasn't a useful enough feature to do another chip revision. Until it's out and people have played around with it, you can't tell if it's a software, hardware or both issue. Speculation is only worthwhile if you're able to do something about it. smf
WICKED. Is that a HK/Asian model (only ones avalible atm)? Let us know what you think and also tell me what the ac adapter end looks like. I'm temped to say ***k it and import a white unit now (was gonna wait on the pastel blue from japan). Doesn't help that your taste in gaming does not fit any current gen market.
I'll rewrite a test app but yes I believe the PSP screen is interlaced. Isn't the DS/GBA an LCD? Thoes are also interlaced (how the ***k do you think we pull off cheap shadows with out stealing the single blend channel ).
It's a european model, was released over here today. The power plug is the same as the old model, and in standard Sony fashion you can use a regular radio power cable to connect to the AC. There's also a new feature in the new firmware called "USB Charge", I'd assume that means it's charging the unit while hooked up to a regular USB cable - but it's something I have yet to try. I quite like the new model, the differences aren't that apparent just looking at it but you can definitely feel the difference when you pick it up in your hands. The biggest improvement is the buttons and, in particular, the dpad (which was atrocious on the old model). Sadly, the screen is still ghosting quite a bit much like the old model, no improvement there. There is, however, a higher contrast ratio so colours appear quite vibrant. The downside to this is that it's much more apparent where the developers have cut corners as far as bit depth goes - dithering and colour banding is alot more visible on this new model. You can even see banding in the XMB interface now, which is a bit unfortunate. All in all, it might not be the update everyone wanted. But the much improved dpad makes it all worthwhile for me. The "Slim & Lite" appearance is a nice bonus, and it also appears to load games a tad quicker. Anyway, here's a photo of the silver unit that I took for the people over at NeoGAF.
the silver colour is burning my eyes. Very lame choice, nice one Sony. PS: what are those little holes above the d-pad and the buttons?
Oh. I thought I just read that the europe launch was delayed a week. I guess it was not. I personaly hate that games use dithering. Speakers. They use to be on the bottom on the unit (dont let the fake holes on the bottom of the face plate fool you, the speaker output was on the bottom pannel).
I don't get the hate the silver model is getting. I agree that the black model is better looking though. I had heard that they only had the black model in stock today so I was totally set on that one, but when the guy behind the counter asked me if I wanted Silver or Black, I said Silver. I've already had a black PSP, figured some variation wouldn't hurt, also fingerprints are much less apparent on this model.
unless it's brushed aluminum, I m not a plastic-silver fan, just my taste. It makes electronics look cheap - hence I also dont like silver gamecubes.
The prorotype looks like ass to me. I really hope they'll abandon that $20 mp3 player color. @Barc0de I swear I didn't read what you previously wrote hahahah
Thats a paradox: most people said they didnt want UMD movies cuz they couldnt play them on Tvs nor any other devices except the PSP. Maybe if sony had released UMD player then people would have bought the damn disks!. Instead they went and sold DVD+UMD bundles, and obviously didnt work...
I dont know about the silver, I've to see it in person to say if the color sucks or not... Plus the black ones are stripped of all pack-in stuff, while the silver ones for just $30 more come with a 1GB MSduo, Daxter (which some say is the best PSP game) and a UMD movie with family guy episodes. Crap, doublepost...
ROFL, Sony is strange. A slim user reported that the psp says a new firmware is avalible and when it downloads, its 3.52. (slim uses 3.6)
i've yet to find someone daring to try running the update. All i've been told is the update the firmware offers is 3.52.
