Rise from your grave.... Allow me to jump on my soapbox here since I'm considerate enough to use a pre-existing thread (there's a shitload of "new PSP" threads here). Okay, I'm actually in the market for this thing. I can't believe I'm saying that. I've got a fucker of a plane trip coming up and my 9 month old will be going. Ass crack-licking JAL won't let us upgrade to business using any of our accumulated 100,000 miles (no joke) unless we buy a $2000 ticket from Japan to the US. If I wanted to get fist fucked, I would go to any number of bars in the Shinjuku 2-chome area. So, I'm back in the cattle car w/ the dregs of society and people who's family don't work for the airlines. So, the main goal (at least for this trip) is something to watch videos on. My iPod can do it, but the screen is small and I need to preserve the battery for my 20 gigs of finely selected tunes (and of course the other 10 or 20 gigs of horse shit I've downloaded over the years). I know dick about the PSP, other than it requires a firmware update to play emulators (zero interest in this, so don't bother explaining that it won't work on the new model). What about video files. Is this technically "fair game" as long as I stick them on a memory card? Some easy tools to rip a DVD and slap it on there? Finally: When watching video, what kind of battery life does one get? Games Questions: Okay, w/ the component out video, I assume you get some kind of scaled up video? The PSP's resolution isn't 480p, but apparently that's what you get. No? How do 2D games work? I assume it's just line-doubled and looks like a stinky pile of pooh. I probably won't buy too many of these games anyway, but would like to know.
For video I use a program called Xilisoft PSP converter. It cracks DVD protection, rips and converts in one hit. Very good app. PM me if you want a copy
Well, I gotta get the thing first. I'm very curious if this works for the new PSP though... not just the old.
The app runs in Windows and just converts DVDs to MP4... can't see any reason why'd Sony'd mess up all their codecs on the new firmware. Wouldn't put it past them though. I'm running 3.6 and it works.
TV out for games is 480p, but the output I believe is 720x480, with the 480x272 game image in the center. There is no scaling offered. The XMB (main menu) however runs in 720x480 natively if you use the Slim's TV out so it takes the whole screen, and so do DVD movies and I assume movies off the memory stick can be played at 720x480 but I don't know. If you want a game to take up the whole screen you need your own scaler or zoom on the TV.
I might just roll the dice and figure it out when I get one. So the OS on the PSP plays MP4 videos natively? Pretty nice of them. But yeah, as you said "wouldn't put it past them". That's what I'm worried about.
They work with no issues, at least everything that I have used on mine. I don't have a Slim but I have the same firmware that is found on the Slim and I play back mp4 with no issue. I have been using PSPVideo9 because it is free but I have been looking for something new, maybe I will check out that Xilisoft PSP program talked about above.
5 hours isn't bad. Assuming I can get another battery for the 4000 to 5000 yen range (I'm pulling that out of my ass) and then the only problem on this airplane will be the screaming child in my lap. That bastard better change my diapers when I get old.... I've changed plenty of his. He seems to time his shits when his mom is gone.
A PSP is a fanastic multi-media device if you have a big enough memory stick and a little preperation time.
Apparently the new battery on the slim sucks on video, so if you have the old fat one and dont care about the games I say keep using it... You mean the trains? I tought the japanese railway system was one of the best, if not the best of the world.
It is... I'm talking about an airplane though. I'm a flight whore... my mother has worked for the airlines since I was a kid. I've flown business about half of all the US->Japan legs I've done (15 total probably). When I'm in the back, it's like $200.
One issue that someone brought up in my forums is the PSP cockblocking 16:9 media viewing for non-UMD videos. Most of the TV I watch is from HDTV, so 16:9. That'll suck. Does it just cut off the sides?
Well I've converted several of my Studio Ghibli DVDs from PAL to MP4 and they've worked fine. Xilisoft gives an option for bitrate and etc.
I think there's a workaround for full 480x272 resolution videos. It may be of the custom-firmware type, though, so take that into consideration. UMD was supposed to be Sony's main delivery vehicle for media on this handheld, so cockblocking full-resolution downloaded videos WOULD provide more incentive for us consumers to purchase the horribly overpriced UMDs. lol, wrong
It's a great idea in theory. So his communism and left-handed masturbation. So here's the question: Are there firmware updates for the PSP Lite at the moment? Not sure if that's a path I want to go down right now, to be honest.
