rant: i hate all new games

You know, Boticelli, Michelangello and other great artists who have left us wonderful pieces also did it for the money. Money is not the issue here, it's the fact that human kind has gotten LAZY and generate "abstract" art as a way of expression that doesn't take too much to create.

Having said this, and back on topic with the new games stuff, I still believe there are SOME games that are truly awesome. The problem is when developers are asked to generate games such as the Hanna Montana franchise or other movie games that have no deeper concept than being another merchandising product. The worse thing is that people buy these games, and therefore they give the more reason for companies to develop them.

 

Not to say painters and sculptures during the Renaissance era weren't making money from their work. You can almost thank money for the advancement of art, as people became richer, they had more surplus, thus allowing other crafts like art and architecture to flourish.

I just don't agree that all art must follow down a certain path of example that one might consider improvement. Abstract art is still relatively new and probably leaves more room for exploration than that of classical styles. If you tried to go down the route of a Michelangelo you'd always be living in his shadow. In a sense it feels restrictive.

The German Nazi regime used the term "Degenerate Art" to describe most all of modern art, at the time when cubism and surrealism were being thrust into the world. This idea was shared by many other people. In a way I see the abstract art, or outsider art, or whatever term you want to use going through the same scrutiny.

One of my favorite modern artists is Joe Coleman, who I would describe as a clash between comic book art and Renaissance painting.
