During the playstation 1s height of success there were many games that were released that a month or so later would be vanished from game shops, as they had sold horribly and the only copies they did sell are gone. I distinctly remember the Batman Forever Ps1 game being out for a week then vanishing. Now the game may be forgettable but I'm sure there are tons of games like this one, bad publisher and bad game meaning low quantities made and produced. So which PS1 games are the rarest? And what constitutes a rare game and one that simply isn't in demand but there are only a few copies floating around? I know racketboy.com has done rare game articles, but I figured the experts here would have a better idea.
theres always something new (and good!) to discover with the PS1, lots of early games can be really hard to find due to poor sales usually due to lack of flashy visuals. i know i spent ages looking for an english version of "agent armstrong" for instance, a great 2D action platformer (i think only released in the EU and US?). i love going down the local gamestore and just picking up a bunch of $5 games ive never heard of and trying them out, found alot of gems that way.
Pretty sure Gunner's Heaven and especially its PAL release, titled Rapid Reload, is still sought after. I don't know exactly if it's rare, but it did get seriously overlooked as an early PS title, because those hot 3D titles like Battle Arena Toshinden were just so damn good! Einhänder is in demand too (for obvious reasons) AFAIK.
Stuff like Captain Commando, Mortal Kombat 2, Hermie Hopperhead can be considered rare. Some crap games, released on PS1 first months are hard to come by as well. Cosmic Race for example. A good way to start is by checking the "PSX - The Guide to the PlayStation" by Kevin Bryan and some guys from DigitPress. The book covers mostly NTSC|U/C but mentions some PAL and NTSC|J games. I even let them use some pics i had. You can buy it or download the pdf version for free. http://www.digitpress.com/products/psxbook.htm Also check DigitPress own rarity guide: http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/search.cmf Sites like Game-Rave and PlayStation Museum are good places to visit as well.
Oh man, I remember playing that shit along with some FPS game in the first week of launch in Japan. Cosmic Race was just F*ing awful. God knows what the idea was behind that game. No goal, Nothing to aim for. Just piss poor controls, mundane racing over err areas which should be the course. Truly awful game. Yakumo
quite rare (and/or pricy) & good: Chippoke Ralph no Daibouken The Rapid Angel Captain Commando Harmful Park Lup Salad Rakugaki Showtime Puyo Puyo Box Aconcagua Toaplan Shooting Battle Umihara Kawase Shun 2nd Edition Gussun Paradise There's so much to discover on PS1.
Yeah i know. A couple years ago i bought a lot of PS1 games (including Hermie Hoppperhead, Gunners Heaven) and this crap came with it. I put it on the PS1, and spent 5 minutes thinking WTF?! I just kept it for collection purposes.
It just came to my mind, is the Beavis & Butt-Head game rare (Virtual Stupidity, written "Vaacharu")? For unknown and very questionable reasons, the PS-version was only released in Japan (!). ong:
How are you defining rare? Are you going with "low print run" or "in demand and expensive" or both? There are some games out there, such as Sentinel Returns, for the PSone which sold for *shit* but aren't in demand so don't really sell for much. There are other games that moves a lot more units but because they are in demand command a much higher price. -hl718
Klaymen Klaymen (Japanese PS1 version of The Neverhood), along with its sequel and spin-off (Skullmonkeys and the air hockey game) are fairly easy to find on Yahoo Japan. Dunno what to consider rare, really. But the stuff I always find interesting and somewhat problematic to track down are the region exclusive (or specific) releases of various PC ports (like how Japan got PS1 ports of Ultima Underworld and Prisoner of Ice, and how Europe got Transport Tycoon and Terror from the Deep) They probably wont cost you a nut or anything, but they certainly are interesting curiosities and obscurities if you just want something that's unusual, with potential features unique to the console versions, and not just "UNDERRATED GAME X!"
