    Nintendo M82 Restoration Project

    [IMG]M82
    Serial Number: 17037
    Original Owner: Dixons
    Location: Tunbridge Wells, England

On the 18[SUP]th[/SUP] February 2013 I received a broken Nintendo M82 from “handfulofbits”. He had been originally given the unit by a friend who rescued it from a Dixons Store located in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

The unit as a few faults, the first being the metal casing which is attached to the control panel unit and holds the plastic marquee in place as been ripped off the unit and now missing.

    Example

This damage was most likely cause by somebody trying to steal the games from the machine while located at Dixons.

The second fault happened while “Handfulofbits” was testing the unit for me. The system had been stored safely in his loft for many years but when it came to test the unit for me the PSU blew after just 5 minutes of gameplay.

The final issues are just cosmetic, the switch to allow the time limit to be changed at the back of the system is no longer present!

There is a lot of sticky tape residue from holding the front panel in place. And there is scratching to the front of the unit.

Hopefully with a bit of luck, I can turn this expensive paperweight into a fully working and restored machine!

    Summary of work required

    Completed Work

    Replace/Repair damage PSU - 06/03/2013
Clean the unit inside out, removing at dirt and grim - 18/07/2013
Replace missing front Control Panel - 18/07/2013

    Finished Item

For sticker residue, orange-based "goo remover" or WD-40 will do the trick.

Considering that the PSU is completely internal do you know what voltages it outputs, you can easily just replace it with something that is compatible and will work fine.
Pictures of the PSU will help :)

Dont worry about the CPU rather just snap some pics of the existing Power Supply (PSU) :)

    I've updated my first post

I will be stripping the unit on Wednesday/Thursday and add photographs of the PSU at this point.

I'm very much hoping that it's just a few capacitors that need replacing to resolve this issue.

Could be "Played for 5 mins then blew" normally is just a cap issue, as they dry out over time, just hope it didn't take anything with it...

Today I opened up the unit, all the screws around the unit are rusted and will need replacing.

Looking inside the unit I notice the rotary switch hanging loose and disconnected from the motherboard (the actual switch had snapped off though but at least the wiring there (should be easy to buy a replacement)

    Image of the rotary switch

The who units full of dirt, the PSU especially

After 10 seconds of looking I found the damage to the PSU

There are just two components which had "blown up" that will need replacing.

I will need to remove the PSU, clean it up so I can look for damaged traces etc and then figure out what they 2 components are so I can replace them.

Second part look like a filter capacitor for EMI. First blown part we could use a close up picture, but it look like a electrolytic capacitor which lost it's top some 10 years ago ... (lol)

It allso looks like there is some gunk on the veriable resistor, next to the coil in the 2nd picture, pictures is a bit dark so it could just be dust aswell.

But what you can do so long is dust everything and remove the filter cap, check to see if it has any identification marks, and post them, allso inspect around that same area for any other damage, its pretty black around there...

Edit: PS be careful around the big caps, dont touch anywhere where there connected, there is a chance there still charged, and that not only would hurt, but could be lethal.

VFs can cause the unit to blow too. Then again wouldn't the fuse be popped?
Glad you found the problem man :)

I think this is just dirt and grime.

Ill remove the board and clean the best I can with the tools I have to hand.

I can desolder the broken parts and look for numbers etc. I. Have the ratings for the blown chips as there displayed on the top of the caps.

Ok, well i've removed the PSU from the system and gave it a basic clean (I don't have any PCB cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to hand).

I've checked the traces under the board and these look great

I'm now low on natural light but managed to take photographs of the board with a light help from the flash on the camera.

The blown cap looks like 0.22uF but I can't tell much more than that.

I think most of the writing is missing from where this exploded :( I'm hoping to find reference to the chip from some sort of manual for the SLP50-3200 manual (If I can find one) or If anyone else as an M82 and can help me out?
